(Adds new statement on number of customers affected)

Jan 5 (Reuters) - DBS Group Holdings , Singapore's biggest bank, said on Thursday it is investigating complaints from about 200 customers of unauthorised withdrawals of funds in Malaysia, through the use of the bank's debit and automated teller machine (ATM) cards.

The bank said it immediately de-activated the compromised cards and was taking steps to compensate customers in full.

DBS said in a statement late on Thursday that the average amount withdrawn was about S$1,000 per account. "We are treating the matter with utmost priority and would like to assure customers that they will be fully compensated for any unauthorised withdrawals within 24 hours," Jeremy Soo, head of the bank's consumer banking unit in Singapore, said in a statement.

Separately, state broadcaster ChannelNewsAsia reported that the police are investigating unauthorised withdrawals from DBS accounts and those of its POSB brand.

Cases of unauthorised transactions or fraud are rare in Singapore, which is one of Asia's largest wealth management centre and a regional base for many foreign banks. DBS suffered from network glitches that affected its ATM and internet systems on July 5, 2010. (Reporting by Saeed Azhar; Editing by David Holmes)

A web server that hosted research papers and publications at the National University of Singapore (NUS) was found to have been hacked into on Thursday, a spokesman said.

The passwords of 70 staff members were likely to have been compromised in the incident. But he said that the information stored on the server was 'not of a confidential nature' and none of it had been removed or tampered with.

The information was also accessible to the public, and the affected accounts had access only to the hacked server, not the NUS network, the university added.

As a precautionary measure, the passwords of all affected accounts had been reset and the server disconnected from the network, said the spokesman.

Confirmed insider job.

There are millions of foreigners working in Spore. I'm sure some are working with DBS AND they might even be dishonest:eek: They could easily pass confidential information to friends to the north:wink:
That's the problem when you hire cheap foreigners, it's harder to check their background.

I now that the MNC company I worked for in Spore called my ex-bosses in Canada to verify the letters of recommendations because I met up with one of them while they were in Spore  I doubt that DBS bothers to do so. another failure of the SINGAPORE BRAND

Hacker group spurred on by NUS error message
Tweet

The hacker group claiming responsibility for yesterday's hack into a National University of Singapore (NUS) server said that an error message had spurred them on.

Australian IT publication, SC magazine, yesterday reported that the message popped up when the group, Team Intra, had initially probed the website.

It has allegedly stated, "If you're trying to use the SQL error message to dig for juicy information, get lost."

This message spurred the hackers to continue with the attempt.

They exploited a vulnerability in the server's database and gained access to about 70 staff members' user names, passwords and domain information.

Team Intra then posted the information online, where it was accessible to public.

A spokesman from NUS told the media that the leaked information was not of confidential nature. He added that none of it had been removed or tampered with.

He also clarified that the online group hacked into a server, which hosted research papers and publications, and not the NUS network.

The Straits Times reported that NUS has reset the passwords of all affected accounts, disconnected the server from the network.

The spokesperson also said that appropriate measures would be put in place to prevent similar incidents from happening in future.

First reported by the magazine www.scmagazine.com.au, the article drew comments from a netizen who signed off as Team Intra.

He shed light on the purpose of the hack.

The user said that Team Intra "did not have any problem with the university", and it was "simply a demonstration of how weak their security was".

He added that the group did not intend to leak private data but wanted to show the poor security standards of the website.

"We have our best intentions."

He added that it took just five minutes to get the server's security but they did not change anything on the server.

The user alleged that the passwords had been accessed before as the group had found a list of passwords posted on a password cracking forum.

400 POSB, DBS customers affected by ATM fraud

By Sharon See | Posted: 06 January 2012 2254 hrs

display_image.php

SINGAPORE: About 400 POSB and DBS Bank customers were affected by the largest ATM fraud in Singapore.

DBS on Friday said internal investigation showed that the unauthorised withdrawals were part of a card skimming operation.

The unauthorised withdrawals were made in Malaysia, with the bulk of them occurring on Wednesday.

DBS said it has identified two ATMs in Bugis Street that were compromised during a three-day period in late November last year.

Lim Sim Seng, DBS Bank's Singapore country manager, said: "During that period, there were about 2,726 customers who used the ATM there and we have reached out to all those customers already and we have blocked the cards."

It is likely that the cards were cloned during the three-day period, but the bank said there is still no conclusive evidence that a cloning device was installed.

The bank has also subsequently checked all its ATMs islandwide, and the two affected ATMs are now back in operation.

The bank added that all its ATMs have anti-skimming devices installed.

Karen Ngui, MD of group strategic marketing and communications at DBS Bank, said: "It's not a lapse in security or anything. All our ATMs are secure, our systems are fine and the incidence of skimming and cloning is something that happens all around the world.

"And so it's unfortunate that it's happened to us. But we take it very seriously; it's a responsibility we have and hence we're immediately compensating customers right away within the 24 hours."

As an added security, DBS said it will send out SMS alerts for all ATM cash withdrawals made in Malaysia.

The bank said no new unauthorised transactions have been reported so far, and it believes the situation is now contained.

But it did not rule out the possibility that a syndicate is behind the incident.

To guard against cloning, the bank said customers should change their PIN numbers frequently.

DBS said it will make full compensation to all affected customers by Friday. It expects to pay out half a million dollars in compensation.

The three victims who shared their stories with Channel NewsAsia on Thursday said they have received their compensation.
