DETROIT -- The city of Detroit filed for Chapter 9 bankruptcy protection in federal court Thursday, laying the groundwork for a historic effort to bail out a city that is sinking under billions of dollars in debt and decades of mismanagement, population flight and loss of tax revenue.

The bankruptcy filing makes Detroit the largest city in U.S. history to do so.

The filing begins a 30- to 90-day period that will determine whether the city is eligible for Chapter 9 protection and define how many claimants might compete for the limited settlement resources that Detroit has to offer. The bankruptcy petition would seek protection from creditors and unions who are renegotiating $18.5 billion in debt and other liabilities.

Japanese didn't kill them... Pride killed them.

For years US car makers were not able to catch up with what the market wants. US cars are known for their shabby workmanship and quality, or lack thereof. US cars were also slow to catch on to market's demands for better fuel efficiency and smaller engines.

Then when the 2008 financial crisis came, they could only think of asking for handouts. They deserve their fate.

I rather the city goes bankrupt than the citizens go bankrupt. If Singapore got no money to mow the lawn ok, as long I got monies to still cheong!! But if Singapore got lots of money in the bank, city filled with sparkling skyscrapers and gleaming MRTs..etc, but the citizenry got no monies, then shit...hey thats happening now!!!
