SINGAPORE: Two former auxiliary police officers, who were based at Changi Airport, turned human traffickers by allowing travellers with false passports and boarding passes to board flights.

They were jailed on Wednesday for accepting bribes to commit the crimes in what the prosecution said was a serious dereliction of their duties.

Thirty-one-year-old Krishna Rao Rajahram was sentenced to 18 months' jail and fined S$2,000.

His accomplice, 26-year-old Loganathan Samugam was sentenced to one year jail.

The two men, who were from AETOS Security Management, had been tasked to pre-screen passengers to ensure that those without valid travel documents were barred from boarding their flights.

They were approached last October by a man known as Sivarajah Paki, a Sri Lankan who is a Swedish citizen.

Sivarajah told Krishna that he was helping his fellow Sri Lankans travel to Europe via Singapore by using Malaysian passports.

He claimed it was difficult for Sri Lankans to obtain visas to enter European countries.

Sivarajah also revealed to Krishna his modus operandi, saying that he would bribe his Malaysian accomplices, who had booked Europe-bound flights, to check in at Changi Airport.

Once inside the transit area, the Malaysian's travel documents would then be hidden at a pre-arranged spot in a toilet before they were picked up by a Sri Lankan who would assume his identity.

For a bribe of S$2,000 from Sivarajah, Krishna had allowed a Sri Lankan to successfully board a Paris-bound flight on October 7 with the use of a Malaysian passport.

He was offered the same amount if he could repeat the offence with two other travellers on November 1.

Krishna agreed to do so but with Loganathan's help this time round.

Loganathan, who was also offered a bribe of S$2,000, met up with their accomplices - K Raja Rajan Kalingamuthu, a Malaysian and Murugesu Navaratnarasa, a Sri Lankan - at the airport's transit area to help them swapped travel documents.

But officers from the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority arrested the four men before the flights took off.

K Raja and Murugesu were each jailed a year in 2010.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Christine Liu told the court on Wednesday that Krishna and Loganathan had "demonstrated a blatant disregard for the law" by engaging in a human trafficking scheme.

She added that the offence could also undermine public confidence in police officers.

She also stressed that airports are potential targets for terrorism and auxiliary police officers deployed there play a vital role in keeping track of those passing through Singapore.

The two men were "willing to commit serious derelictions of their duties" in exchange for money even with this looming threat of terrorism, said DPP Liu.

These CISCO officer are mostly from Johore Bahru or hail from Penang. They are being paid around $1400 to $1800 per month , working 12 hour shift. 6 days week.

To think that airport and ICA outsource such important position to a pte entity, it is unthinkinable. We need to bring the wage back to a sane level.

Getting paid $2000 each is more than their 1 month salary. Furthermore, Singapore is not their country, you think they give a shit? You dun need a genuis to figure that out.

On top of that the shifts can be continuous at time. It is common for them to work 3 different shifts a week. Really wrecks havoc with the internal clock.

10k per month?

Muthukali, if CISCO chaps get 10k a month, ministers would want 1 million a month. CISCO and AETOS are doing very well. Together with SATS police, they are the only armed security companies in S'pore. If welfare is better taken care of, I am sure less problems will appear. THis can be donbe quite easily coz both CISCO and AETOS have complete control of the armed guards' industry as both are Temasek-linked.

Including OT they get about 2k-3.5k, depending on their rank. Not only airports and ICA, they are all over - PSA, prisons, courts, govt buildings etc.

No choice coz not many locals want to work long hours with low basic pay and low prospect... A fren of mine has been with cisco for abt 10yrs n still a constable. I asked him y no promotion, he said because since cisco is a private company any promotions n increments will affect the company's profit.. I asked him how he survive all this years? He told me he need do alot of OTs' just to make it up... Sad story sia... No wonder so many m'sians in cisco.. 1.6K per mth is equivalent to RM4K back home.. Almost their police ASP pay i think
