Chinese tourists have the money, but not the manners

It's PRC culture, along with their societal norms and social hierarchy. If you have money [and power], you have no need for manners unless you are dealing with someone with even more money and power than yourself.

Nouveau riche manner tops list of bad behaviour by Chinese tourists
Entitled attitude of some mainlanders visiting abroad is what hosts find most offensive, survey of travel agencies finds

They may have deep pockets, but mainland tourists' "nouveau riche manner" is one of the worst things about them, according to a new survey.

A "Top 10" list of the very worst behaviour traits of Chinese abroad was published yesterday by Guangzhou Daily, following "in-depth interviews" with travel agencies both on the mainland and overseas.

A "nouveau riche manner" topped the list, and was joined by such bad habits as being too noisy in public, taking photographs of strangers without their consent - even when they're at the beach - and discarding rubbish at beauty spots.

And while Chinese tourists' deep pockets left a big impression on local businesses, it was not always in a good way; many felt annoyed at their arrogance, tourist guides told the paper.

Some Chinese tourists believed that as they had paid for their holiday they were entitled to behave in whatever manner they were comfortable with - even if that meant wearing slippers in the foyer of a luxury hotel.

Others knocked on the doors of beautiful houses in Zimbabwe to ask if the properties were for sale, a Chinese student in the country reported.

Foreign guides were puzzled at how some would "never stop asking" for discounts or free gifts - even when it was clear they could afford the full price of whatever service or product it was they were haggling over.

Embarrassed by the unruly behaviour of some mainland travellers who have made headlines across the world, China's tourism regulator has pledged to compile a database of badly behaved individuals.

More than 100 million mainland Chinese travelled abroad in the first 10 months of 2014, compared to 8.43 million throughout 1998, the China National Tourism Administration said.
Throughout 2014 they spent US$164.9 billion, according to the State Administration of Foreign Exchange, some US$113.6 billion more than foreign tourists spent in China.

Asian destinations, particularly Japan and South Korea, were the most popular for mainland travellers, due to their proximity and simple visa application processes, the tourism regulator said.

Two Chinese flights over the past few days were allegedly delayed - one by a row between passengers and another when a flight attendant arrived late after going shopping. Photo: Xinhua

Two incidents of flight delays in China over the past few days – one allegedly caused by a flight attendant who arrived late after going shopping and the other by a quarrel between passengers – have raised eyebrows online.

A flight yesterday from Beijing to Chengdu was delayed for nearly two hours after some passengers allegedly quarrelled over seating arrangements, mainland media said.

The dispute broke out before the plane was scheduled to take off at 11am, the Beijing Youth Daily said, quoting an internet user who was on the plane.

The internet user also said that several members of the flight crew had tried to mediate between the rowing passengers, and the aircraft finally took off at about 1pm.

The report did not identify the airline or the flight involved, but it quoted “a staff member from the airline” that the flight was possibly delayed because of the quarrel, which had delayed the closing of the aircraft’s door.

The unnamed airline told the newspaper that the take-off had been delayed because it was “waiting for passengers”.

In another case, an Air China passenger flying from Seoul to Chongqing on Saturday afternoon complained in a microblog that passengers were made to wait until five minutes after the scheduled boarding time before finally getting on the aircraft at Incheon International Airport, when a flight attendant arrived carrying several shopping bags.

However, Air China denied the claim yesterday, saying that the attendant was back at work just before the first passenger began to board and the flight had never been delayed, the Beijing Times said.

The microblogger posted comments on his weibo page on Sunday evening saying that Air China’s Chongqing branch had told him that all his complaints were true and it appreciated him making the complaint.

However, the microblog was deleted this morning.

Do you guys choose airlines that has less China chinks in it? I actually make an effort to do that so to avoid any unnecessary problems and noise that will disrupt my comfortable flight..

The first one I banned is SIA, China airlines and follow by those budget airlines.

For most PRCs, the local rule is that if you have the money, you don't need to have manners. Boorish behaviour is a sign of strength and power. Courtesy is a sign of weakness. Being overly courteous means you are a fucking eunuch!
