I don't think the VT-4 has surpassed the M1; the article merely said on par. But its strongest selling point is its price: $3 mil cheaper than the M1.

The current trend in developed countries is to buy refurbished used main battle tanks. But many 3rd World countries are looking for brand new, state-of-the-art tanks. That's where China's targeting. Pakistan has already placed an order.

The MBT-3000 also named VT4 for the export version is a new generation of main battle tank designed and manufactured by the Chinese Defense Company NORINCO. According NORINCO, the MBT-3000 is the latest technology of main battle tank especially designed to meet the challenge of high-tech warfare. Its overall performance and combat capability are among the most advanced main battle tanks in the world. The MBT-3000 was unveiled for the first time to the public at the International Defense Exhibition Eurosatory in June 2012. At the China International Aviation & Aerospace Exhibition 2014, The Chinese Defense Company NORINCO has showed for the first time, a ream model of its new main battle tank VT4. In August, Norinco treated diplomats, military officials and defense contractors from 44 countries to a demonstration of its latest tank designed for export, state media reported. The MBT-3000 not only costs almost $3 million less than its American rival, an automatic loader for the main gun allows it operate with three crew members instead of four. At the defense Exhibition AAD 2014 in Pretoria, Namibia’s deputy defense minister has showed interest for the new Chinese main battle tank. According to Kanwa Defense Review, Pakistan is looking forward to testing the new MBT-3000 (also called VT4 for the export version) main battle tank.

Anyone can make any kind of claim for their products, but the only way they can prove it is out there in the battlefield. China's military is rapidly modernising, but her armed forces seriously need real battlefield practice instead of just taking part in parades. In this area, no current country comes close to the US who has been active in warfare non-stop since WW2 (Korean War, Vietnam, Middle-East, Nicarague....) China needs to get involved in at least some small scale skirmishes and raids. Suggest they get involved in bombing raids on ISIS to train their pilots and coordinate their operational forces. Otherwise, thoughts of whacking the US is just fancy dreaming.

The Chinese are pragmatic; they have too many domestic problems on their plate. As long as ISIS doesn't threaten Chinese interests, China will leave it alone. But if it starts executing Chinese citizens (3 were executed in 2014), or worse, starts abetting Xinjiang Uighur separatism, the Chinese will step in.

Nothing matters to China more now than threats to its borders and statehood.

That's why talk of China's expansionist and hegemonistic intentions is baseless. They have utterly no intention of becoming the world's policeman like the US save protecting its territory.

True. China is a peaceful country. Her dealings with foreign countries are amicable, warm, and sincere. It's her internal issues that may not be liked by everyone, but that is of concern only to her peoples.

Modernization is essential for China, once a leader in technology and innovation, had stagnated under dynastic rule for too long. Whilst this is already underway, she still has a massive task to overcome income gap and wealth distribution. The world need not fear China, she is just levelling the playing field. A modern China is better for everybody in the world. For sometime, I was thinking that Taiwan would retake the mainland, but that is unlikely now.

dont be stupid,this is the 21st century,the technological edge differences is not that vast,just like computer technology and everything else in life,u have to decide between getting something thats affordable yet still powerful and good enough to do the job or spending a bomb just to get a pc or laptop thats just slightly better or faster in specs.is it worth paying that $400 extra just to get a Intel processor thats just 0.30 GHZ faster than the next fastest one?or paying 3 to 4 grand for a top of the line gaming machine when u can just pay $700 bucks for a lenovo machine which is powerful enough today with 8gb ram and 2gb dedicated graphics and intel core processor to handle most mid to high end games and also bloody cheap and good enough to do the job?

Singapore is a small country so we have the excuse of paying ridiculous sums of money for america's overpriced junk.we have the luxury of being the number three spender on military expenditure per capita in the world simply because we dont have very many people.

one advantage China has is they have unlimited expandable amount of human resources.couple that with the ability to make decent acceptable quality machines at a extremely low cost.

Just look at the tv show shark tank,most entrepreneurs and start ups are going to chinese manufacturers to lower manufacturing costs for their margins,US manufacturers are simply unable to compete.

Did you actually watch the video, the tank missed the target even while firing at close range and while stationary, it has more than $3 million dollars less technology than the M1, epic fail. Certainly not bloody cheap and still able to do the job.
