I took the one from Shanghai to Beijing in August, took almost 5hrs. Was a breeze, only 3 stops.
I booked the ticket in my hotel, there is a travel agency, I remembered I paid like 1,200RMB for two tickets

Booking online? Yes its possible at http://www.12306.cn/mormhweb/ this is more for Chinese in China cos payment outside of China is an issue as it does not accept credit card payment I think and it also require identification. I am not too sure how its done but this is the right website for sure.
