Too many men and not enough women has become a serious social problem in China, the Chinese Radio Network reported.
"Boys are valued more than girls. This philosophy is the reason for the problem today," said Yuan Xin, a social analyst and professor at Nankai University in Tianjin.
The latest statistics from the government show that the ratio between women and men in China is 100:118, while most countries in the world would have a ratio of no more than 103:107, Yuan said.
"[In other countries], parents just have more babies until they have a child of the desired gender. But in China, most parents do whatever it takes, legal or illegal, to have a baby boy," Yuan said. The issue is exasperated by the one-child policy, Yuan added.
The government statistics also showed that approximately 30 million men will not be able to get married because there will not be enough women for them in China by the end of 2020.
It will become more and more difficult for Chinese men to find a wife, said Zhai Zhenwu, a sociologist. It will also become more and more difficult for Chinese men to marry to women who are at the same age, because these women would be married by those older men who could not find wives of their own age.
Yuan said that the government has begun to carry out new population policies to promote the idea that baby girls are as important as baby boys.
