MAN TRIES TO EXTORT $100,000
Caught for extortion attempt
A 26-YEAR-OLD man has been arrested by the police for attempting to extort $100,000 from a local car service centre. The suspect was arrested at around 11pm on Thursday night along Tanjong Katong Road.
The man had called and sent SMSes threatening to harass the customers of the service centre unless he was paid $100,000.
The manager of the service centre lodged a report with the police at about 1pm on Thursday, which led to the suspect's arrest later at night.
The mobile phone used to send the threatening messages was seized as a case exhibit. The man will be charged in court on Saturday.
For putting a person in fear in order to commit extortion, under Section 385 of the Penal Code, Chapter 224, he can be sentenced to an imprisonment term between two to five years and with caning, if convicted.
