Catfishing on dating websites netted an Ohio guy $1.3 million
Seth Nyamekye, 39, was found guilty of 35 counts of money laundering for running a romance scammer ring’s bank account. According to U.S. Attorney Kenneth Parker of the Southern District of Ohio, Nyamekye collaborated with others in the gang from at least June 2016 to February 2018 and received at least eight victims’ money straight into his bank account.
The romance scam ring used many false dating websites to contact with men and women all over the United States, seducing them romantically before enticing them to wire money to various bank accounts controlled by the fraudster. According to the US Attorney’s Office, Nyamekye maintained one of these bank accounts, Gloseth Ventures LLC, and personally saw $1.3 million received from persons duped by bogus profiles.
Three particular instances where Nyamekye scammed his victims:
A con artist pretended to be a soldier and persuaded a victim they met online to wire $170,000 to Nyamekye’s bank account.
Pretending to be a soldier serving in the military overseas, a fraudster persuaded another man to fall in love with the bogus profile and donate $73,000 to Nyamekye.
A scammer persuaded a woman to wire $50,000 to Nyamekye’s bank account by convincing her that she was engaged to their bogus profile.
