........ It can be explained as the cards for Bankers have just been released, so remaining cards left will not be to Banker's advantage. That is why Player might recover and open more times. However it doesn't mean we should start buying Player. Instead, when the card does not favour Banker, we should just stop and not buy any bets on Player or Banker.
You have brought up a very strong point.

Today I discuss with another person in Longjie, who was working as a baccarat-insurer for 20yrs, who also favours banker and bet very systematically. Having being in this line for many yrs, he therefore brought with him only $300 and thats his limit for the day, a very smart move. He fully agree with me that card counting should work in the long run and this is because, like those insurance company that win because they underpaid, card counting will increase our chance of winning henceforth at the end of the day, we should be winning. Please take note that In order not to corrupt your winning chances, the pattern of your stakes must be constant throughout.

I wish to share something with all the gamblers here. Whilst still gambling on the table and in deciding how much to put next, it is better not to think of how much u lose or win, it is better to think how many times u have lose or win.

Good night! Hengheng!

This is one reason. I don't win 5 figures on a day trip anyway. But the main reason is still the trip on ferry. The aunties uncles pushing their way thru the ferry is way too much for me to take. :p

Yesterday, I was at Harbourfront. Dropped by Asian Cruise to enquire about
LJ. I was approached by a young man at the counter. If I want to go to LJ, I had to book a ferry by calling him. Who is this man who gave me card that
is not associated with LJ or Asian cruise. So why would uncles and aunties
pushing their way to the ferry if you had made a booking on the ferry.

today I won $800, thus covering my lose yesterday.
Therefore nett = $3.4k + $800
= $4.2k

Of course tmr I am going LJ again and my target is to win at least $800.
Its very tempting to use the martingale but I know I should not use this method as its a killer.

Today I also noted that the poker table do not have much people and the stakes played was quite small.

So will I win tmr? Can we "tan chiat"? Lets see the results tmr.

Uncle, looks like you got lucky with LJ. My other frds also won from LJ. From few hundreds to few grands. Most of them shifted from LW to LJ.

I have done a lot of research and mathematical calculations on Baccarat. Now I am trying to put them from thoughts into words. This will probably take me up to 2-3 months at least.
And then I will probably share the difference between theoretical calculations and real life results.

Also, I have some statistics on soccer betting which will reap profits every season. It's not based on playing with odds but playing with a system based on their past results.

Now I am trying to write them all into a blog so that it will be easier to manage rather than spread it across in this thread or other postings. Once done, will share the blog.
No need pay money or need to subscribe to any service. Free of Charge to all. :p

I am very disappointed with myself. Today, wed, I lost 2.7k in Longjie. therfore my nett winnings = 4.2k - 2.7k = 1.5k

As usual, the problem with me today is, just like many others, is that when winning, our stakes are small. At first I did won, however my stakes were only $30. I won many times but my stakes remain constant at $30 and at one stage I did won $300................, so after playing and playing,........ finally I began to slide back and thats where I began to increase my stakes in steps, I could not make it because player kept winning, finally my stakes was $400 each bet and all I needed was to win back 4-5 rounds but it did not come. times up I have to go and so I lost $2.7k. $2.7k seems a lot but considering that I bet $400 each bet, then $2.7k is only about 7 times which is not much. If I do have time, I believe I shld be able to win back all by applying "the number of times" strategy.

The only thing I am very pleased with myself was that I still had $5k in my pocket. In my past, when I lose, I lose everything.

What shld I do next? I will be in macau tmr. Very cold there I know and I love it.

Today the battle was quite fierce as I do not want to lose, my average bet today was about $300 - $600. the furthest I won was about $400, the furthest I lost was about $1.5K. On my last game, my gross result was a lost of $400, times up and I have to stop the next round....., and so I bet $500 on banker........., damn player got 6point and banker 4 point, I thought to myself, fu%$#$% surely lose $900, kanina, and so another card was given to me and I "beeeee"...., nap shot, I got a 3 which total 7 point... heheh )... that was close!

Battle for gamblers in Macao gets fierce

A battle for supremacy in Macao's gambling market is shaping up between the casino tycoon, Stanley Ho, and an American newcomer in 2008 as the Chinese enclave emerges as the biggest gambling jurisdiction in the world.

Gambling revenue from Macao's casinos leapt 46.6 percent last year to reach about 83 billion patacas, or $10.4 billion, according to industry analysts and officials.

With the momentum for growth expected to be maintained this year, Macao is poised to overtake the entire state of Nevada in the United States as the biggest gambling jurisdiction after surpassing the Las Vegas Strip last year.

The phenomenal growth is also driving big changes to an industry that until 2002 was a monopoly controlled by Ho. In December, Ho's SJM Holdings, operator of his flagship Lisboa and Grand Lisboa casinos, was beaten to the top place in revenue for the first time by Las Vegas Sands, which owns the Sands Macao and the newly opened Venetian Macao.

Analysts predict that Las Vegas Sands will maintain its lead in the Macao market this year because of the popularity of the Venetian, a fully integrated resort on the Cotai Strip that opened in August, and its success in winning lucrative VIP gambling business.

A slip into second place in revenue share would be another setback for Ho, who has been making a troubled bid to list a 25 percent stake of SJM in Hong Kong with the goal of raising about $1 billion.

The listing has been hindered by a long-running legal dispute between Ho and his sister Winnie over the ownership of shares in Sociedade de Torismo e Diversões de Macau, SJM's parent.

Although Ho controls 18 of Macao's 27 casinos, most of them are relatively small and vulnerable to determined efforts from new American and Hong Kong casino operators to win VIP customers, the most valuable segment of the market, said Davis Fong, director of the Institute for the Study of Commercial Gaming at the University of Macau.

"In 2008, it's very likely SJM will fall into second place for the whole year," Fong said. "Traditionally, SJM has relied on its VIP room operation. If you look at the proportion of gaming revenue, more than 70 percent came from VIP rooms. Now it's more competitive."

Fong said that top-flight customers were crucial to industry profitability and were driving the sharp growth in the local gambling industry. Among the factors behind the increase in VIP gambling, he said, were booming property and share markets in mainland China and Hong Kong and the opening of Las Vegas-style resorts, like the Venetian, that were drawing in wealthy gamblers from other regions.

Macao casinos rely heavily on table games for their revenue in contrast to Las Vegas, which gets the majority of its gaming revenue from slot machines.

The critical role of the VIP customer for Macao's casinos is evident in revenue figures for 2006. VIP Baccarat, the main game played by high-stakes gamblers in Macao, accounted for about two-thirds of the 56.6 billion patacas in revenue from games of fortune, according to the gaming inspection bureau.

Most industry analysts expect Macao's gambling industry to maintain strong growth over the next three years, with estimates for the increase this year varying from 20 percent to 30 percent.

David Green, a casino consultant with PricewaterhouseCoopers in Macao, said that growth of this scale would give Macao more than the combined gambling revenues of Las Vegas and Reno in Nevada.

"The significance of that is that it would be the largest single gaming jurisdiction in the world," he said. "The implications are that some of the focus that has traditionally been on Las Vegas might shift further to Macao."

In the 12 months to December, gambling revenue in Nevada was $12.8 billion but had increased only 2.8 percent over the year-earlier period.

A string of new integrated casinos and resorts are to open in Macao over the next two years.

This development, most of it taking place on the Cotai Strip, Macao's answer to the famed Las Vegas Strip, will propel future growth by attracting visitors other than hard-core gamblers from the mainland and Hong Kong.

The new Cotai Strip developments will aim to hold visitors for longer periods by pitching for convention business and vacationers in search of entertainment and high-end shopping.

"With the launch of the U.S. casinos, a lot of people who didn't come to Macao before are coming and the whole VIP segment is getting bigger," said Gavin Ho, the head of Hong Kong and China research of the gambling industry at CLSA.

Gambling in Macau

The average gaming table in Macau grosses almost nine times the average one in Las Vegas, and the world's highest grossing casino, the legendary Lisboa, brings in more than $7 million dollars per day. Small wonder that international casino groups have swarmed the region, driving Macau's explosive double-digit growth during the past five years.

The Scene

Gambling is lightly regulated, so there are only a few things to remember. No one under age 18 is allowed into casinos. Most casinos use Hong Kong dollars in their gaming and not Macau patacas. Minimum bets range from HKD$50,000 to HKD$100,000 per hand. You can get cash from credit cards and ATMs 24 hours a day, and every casino has a program to extend additional credit to frequent visitors. Most casinos don't have strict dress codes outside of their VIP rooms, but you're better off not wearing shorts or sleeveless shirts. Minimum bets for most tables are higher than Las Vegas, from MOP$50--MOP$100, but there are lower limits for slots and video gambling.

Chinese men and women have long embraced gambling, so many of Macau's gamblers are truly hard-core. Average bets are in the hundreds of patacas per hand, and many people gamble until they're completely exhausted or completely broke, usually the latter.

The Classic Casinos

Hotel Casino Lisboa
Hyatt Regency Hotel Casino
Mandarin Oriental Casino Hotel
Wynn Macau
Sands Macao Casino Hotel
Venetian Macao Resort Hotel

The Games

Macau's casinos are geared to Asian gamblers, so most tables are dedicated to baccarat, fan-tan, and Asian dice games. There are few blackjack, poker, or roulette tables. Baccarat is by far the most popular game for Asian gamblers, so most casinos devote the majority of their floors to baccarat tables. Many Chinese gamblers believe that this is the fairest game, so they tend to make large bets. You can bet on four items: the player's hand, the banker's hand, tie hand, and pair. Though you can't take the house -- and there are maximum payouts -- you'll still see the biggest crowds and hear the loudest stirrings from the baccarat tables.

Big and Small (Dai-Siu) is a game based guessing values of three dice under a covered glass canister. You can bet on values, number combinations, and most commonly, "big" value or "small" value. Hear the collective groan when three-of-a-kind turns up, and the house takes all.

Fan-tan is an ancient Chinese game. The croupier (counter) plunges an inverted silver cup into a pile of porcelain buttons on the table. He then moves the cup containing a number of buttons to one side. After bets are placed, the cup is lifted and the buttons are counted off in groups of four until either one, two, three, or four buttons are left at the end of the count. Cash bets are placed on the table on the numerals one, two, three, or four; odds or evens; corners; or divisions between numbers.

Pacapio is basically a Chinese version of Keno. Tickets are printed with 80 Chinese characters and you select 10 characters to bet on from a computerized draw of 20 characters. There are six locations for Pacapio betting, the most popular being the Lisboa Betting Centre.

Pai kao has been a popular Chinese game since the 19th century. It's played with dominoes and a revolving banker system where one player assumes the role of the house while the casino gets a percentage of all bets. The rules are complicated, and the game is offered at the Lisboa and a few other casinos.

Roulette is played using the European wheel with a single "0," giving you a slightly better chance of winning over the American wheel with both a "0" and a "00" slot. You must exchange your cash or chips into special, roulette-only marker chips before playing, and then exchange these chips back to casino chips when leaving the table. This game isn't very popular, so you'll find, at most, one or two live tables plus a handful of electronic tables in the larger casinos.

Paradise Casino Opens at Kam Pek Casino Macau
Hong Kong-listed Paradise Entertainment Ltd has unveiled the largest e-table casino in the world in Macau at the Kam Pek Casino, hoping to parlay its local connections and innovative spirit to grab a greater slice of the booming gaming market.
Live-dealer baccarat
Paradise Entertainment Ltd has the Macau patent on electronic baccarat terminals based around a live-dealer game, blocking the entry of more recently developed competing products, such as Shuffle Master Inc’s Rapid Baccarat™.

Paradise’s LIVE Baccarat is a hybrid system, with players sat at electronic terminals that process bets on a game dealt by a live dealer. Having a live dealer makes LIVE Baccarat appear “more fair and believable” to players than fully automated baccarat multi-terminals, according to Paradise Entertainment Ltd Executive Director Aaron Park. Players also appear to be more engaged when playing against a live dealer than a computer generated image, and consequently are likely to bet more aggressively on the LIVE Baccarat system. Meanwhile, the automated processing of bets dramatically increases productivity of a dealing table while preventing fraud and errors.

Sharing is winning
Paradise is the only gaming machine manufacturer to have secured profit sharing agreements with Macau casino licensees, while all other suppliers are restricted to either lease or purchase agreements.

Paradise currently has profit sharing agreements with two of Macau’s six licensees, SJM and Galaxy Entertainment Group. Mr Park says those agreements were struck thanks to the company’s “local connections,” especially those of Chairman and CEO Jay Chun, who “has tremendous experience in Macau and knows everybody in the field here.”

Paradise bears all installation, maintenance and tech support costs, as well as paying the salaries of promotional staff for LIVE Baccarat. In return, SJM and Galaxy provide the venue and dealers and give Paradise a share of net wins from the terminals.

Paradise unveiled the largest e-table casino in the world in Macau on December 28, 2007. The Paradise Casino, which houses 280 of the company’s LIVE Baccarat terminals, operates under the license of Stanley Ho’s Sociedade de Jogos de Macau (SJM), and brings the number of terminals deployed around Macau by the company to 540—the company has an additional 160 terminals placed on a profit sharing basis at a Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR) venue in Manila. According to Mr Park, the company’s target is to have 1,200 terminals installed across Macau by the end of 2008, including an additional 100 terminals at the Paradise Casino.

The Paradise Casino is located on the third floor of the Kam Pek site, which was previously home to the flagship outlet of Melco PBL’s Mocha Slot, before Melco PBL acquired its own local casino license, forcing Mocha out of the SJM-owned site for regulatory reasons (Mocha previously operated under SJM’s license). If all goes to plan, Paradise hopes to also take over the first and second floors of the Kam Pek site in the near future.

Mr Park points out that as Paradise demonstrates the value proposition of its product and its bargaining power with casino licensees increases, it has now been able to command a greater share of the gaming revenue generated by its terminals. Whereas Paradise previously received a 31% share of net wins on its machines at SJM venues (with 40% going to the government as gaming tax, and the remainder to SJM), the company receives 40% of net wins on the 280 terminals at the new Paradise Casino at Kam Pek.

SJM has been steadily switching its profit sharing agreements with all its 40:40:20 partners—40% to the government, 40% to the property owner, 20% to SJM—to a new 40:55:5 arrangement, whereby SJM only takes a 5% cut, but the property owners must assume all labour costs. Paradise expects to switch to that arrangement in the near future.

Paradise is in a unique position to benefit from assuming labour costs, as the major value proposition of the LIVE Baccarat system is a more than 90% reduction in labour costs. Dealer costs in Macau have been spiralling since the government liberalized the local gaming industry in 2002 leading to an explosion in the number of tables, while the government has maintained a strict ban on casinos hiring foreign workers as dealers.

The lower labour costs allow LIVE Baccarat to offer a minimum bet of just HK$20 (US$2.6), compared to the HK$100 minimum on normal baccarat tables. Given the relentless increase in the number of regular baccarat tables around Macau, Mr Park says: “Some people ask ‘won’t they have no choice but to lower their minimum bet from HK$100 to HK$50? How will you compete then?’”

Mr Park does not think casino operators in Macau will ever introduce significant numbers of baccarat tables with minimum bets below HK$100, because at that level, with labour costs so high, “there is no reason to actually go and launch that table to begin with.” Any tables with minimum bets below HK$100 would be “loss leaders in order to bring in people, so they’ll go and play other games. But in that case, the casinos are really crossing their fingers that those people who are betting less than HK$100 per hand are going to go and lose money somewhere else,” argues Mr Park. “How are you going to justify paying somebody HK$15-16,000 per month in salary, and you’ve got a table with a minimum bet of less than HK$100? It doesn’t make sense.”

The Paradise Box™
The opening of the Paradise Casino saw the introduction of the company’s Paradise Box™, the second generation terminal for its LIVE Baccarat system. The Paradise Box is the result of the company’s quest to provide products responsive to the needs of players in Macau and the rest of the region. The Paradise Box is an attempt to provide a more intense and immersive gaming experience to players at the LIVE Baccarat terminals.

A dealer on the LIVE Baccarat system currently handles two tables simultaneously (scaleable up to three tables), with each table linked to a separate section of 20 terminals. One hand is dealt to each section of terminals every fifty seconds—twice as fast as each hand is dealt at a regular baccarat table.

Chinese gamblers are renowned for the intensity at which they play, and Mr Park acknowledges the LIVE Baccarat players in Macau are “pretty hardcore.” Many of them want the game to go even faster.

“It usually only takes people ten seconds, maximum, to place a bet, so they have 40 seconds of downtime, and during that downtime they’re very fidgety,” Mr Park reveals, adding that at the first generation LIVE Baccarat terminals, “it’s not uncommon to see one person standing up and moving between both sections,” so that they can play two hands every fifty seconds—four times the pace at which they could play at a regular table.

Paradise responded by developing the second generation Paradise Box.
An additional screen at each terminal offers a server based slot game to keep players occupied during the downtime. “It’s the first electronic table game with a live dealer plus a server-based game,” says Mr Park.

The Paradise Box has three screens. The pair of screens on the left provides a live feed of a game dealt by a live dealer and the interface to place bets on it. The single screen on the right offers a choice of server-based slot games.

The right-hand screen of the Paradise Box currently only offers three games, which Mr Park believes is a big reason take up of the third screen has thus far been slow. However, “we believe we’re going to see a lot more people play that third screen when we launch more games,” he adds, targeting a total of 15 games on the server-based side by the end of the first quarter of 2008, and 50 games by the end of the year. Paradise also has an attractive proposition for game providers. “In order for us to go and attract the best game content and killer games, our plan is to profit share. We’ll be the only guys in Macau who will profit-share with game providers,” he reveals.

A key feature of the Paradise Box is the plush seating with arm rests and drink holders. There is also a two-person love-seat configuration. “Comfort is the most important factor. The Paradise Box could be considered almost an extension of the hardcore gambler, reminiscent of the pilot seat in “The Matrix” films, suggests Mr Park.
Life-changing jackpot
Paradise has a patent on a progressive jackpot at regular baccarat tables, which could become one of the company’s biggest earners.

Paradise first launched the progressive jackpot as a side bet on LIVE Baccarat last year, and on January 16, 2008 launched it across 18 regular baccarat tables at the Galaxy-run Waldo Casino, located across the street from Sands Macao. Waldo now boasts “the largest number of baccarat-based progressive linked tables anywhere,” says Mr Park, with the side-bet standing at HK$20.

Progressive jackpots—“we call it the ‘life changing jackpot,’” says Mr Park—hold great allure for Chinese gamblers. Paradise’s trademarked Paradise Jackpot is the world’s first baccarat-based jackpot, which pays out when specific card sequences are dealt during a LIVE Baccarat game. The “Paradise Jackpot” pays out 100% of the pool when the five cards constituting a Royal Flush are dealt, while fixed payouts are also available for four of a kind, three of a kind and banker or player pairs.

In 2007, Macau casinos generated about US$9.0 billion in baccarat revenue—$7.0 billion at VIP tables, and $2.0 billion in the mass market, representing a combined 86.7% of the city’s total $10.4 billion casino revenue for the year. “If for each game 50% of players place the side bet, the pool will grow by about half a million a day. The potential payout will take about one month or even longer. I wouldn’t be surprised if the jackpot goes up to 50 million.”

And you thought you were a high roller...

Casino operators call them 'whales'. They are the leviathans of the gambling world and can drop a few million dollars in a single session without raising a sweat. Here are a few true stories about the massive amounts some players are capable of winning or losing.

Mo Chan...you're the man!
(Excerpts from a story in The Age newspaper, May 2001)

If you're a baccarat high roller you might want to give Sydney's Star City Casino a miss. They recently cut their losing commission rate to high rollers and gamblers seduced into their Endeavour Room. The casino used to offer the standard 60% payback commission for players who lost $1million or more, but now offer only 30%. Crown in Melbourne and Jupiters in Queensland still operate at the 60 per cent rate.

The reason for this substantial cut in high roller concessions, is the fact that they were recently cleaned up at their Baccarat tables by a whale who went on a big wining streak and took just under $10 million from the casino in less than a month, before vowing never to return after a dispute with the casino. The casino has since been looking to recoup losses, and it looks like other high rollers will have to wear the bill.

The whale in question was identified as Mo Chan, who according to insiders bet as much as $300,000 to $500,000 on per hand. The action has taken place in the private rooms, so no one knows exactly, but its scale has leaked to other gamblers who frequent Crown's Mahogany Room in Melbourne.

Mr Chan was invited into Star City's lavish Endeavour Room, and later one of their three VVIP" rooms within the Endeavour Room when his propensity to bet was displayed. It was here that his amazing winning streak took place, until he arrived one day to continue play and found that the casino had changed the rules of play. According to insiders, the casino cut its margin of loss on his bets. No matter how big the individual bets, the gap between the bank and the player - the casino's margin for loss - had been fixed for Mr Chan's play at $150,000. Suddenly the casino was only prepared to lose $100,000 a play.

It was then that the outraged Chinese-born player stormed out of the casino, vowing never to return, and took his custom to the equally lavish Mahogany Room of Melbourne's Crown Casino.

"I couldn't understand it," said one insider. "If he had $10 million of my money and was playing a game of pure luck I would want him to stay so that I could get it back."

So, thanks to Mr Chan's incredible streak, and Star City Management's stupidity, high rollers will be inclined now to give this casino a miss when it comes to playing Baccarat.

Kerry Packer...the whales' whale
(Excerpts from a story in USAToday, April 2002)

During one of his famous gambling binges in Las Vegas, Australian media mogul Kerry Packer, lost $20 million at the Bellagio Vegas in the Summer of 2001.

Rumour also has it that Mr Packers appetite for a bet still wasn't fully satisfied. During a discussion with a fellow high roller from Texas, Packer was overheard enquiring as to the Texan's net worth. When the Texan smugly replied "$60 million son", Packer politely asked him if he would like to wager on the toss of a coin for that exact amount. Needless to say the Texan declined the bet after picking his jaw up from off the floor.

Part of what makes Baccarat a great game is that it's so simple.

The Player's decision is limited to deciding what kind of bet to make. From there on it's in the dealer's hands and you collect or pay when it's over.

In Mini Baccarat, which is the only version most of us will ever see in play, you don't even get the option of handling the cards. In the "whale" games of European Baccarat they get to mangle the cards whenever they like just for personal entertainment.

But then they're dropping £1,000 or more a hand and you can bet that that buys a lot of replacement cards.

Betting:

Bet on your own hand (Player) and you face a house edge of 1.24%. Bet on the Banker's hand and the edge is either 0.6% (if there's a 4% House cut) or 1.06% (if their cut is 5%).

Finally there's the Tie bet which at best gives the house almost a 5% edge (Pay 8:1) and at worst 14+% (Pay 9:1).

Forget the Tie bet for obvious reasons. Unless you can find a game with 4% vig on Banker bets, betting Player or Banker is six of one, half a dozen of the other.

Strategy:

The first thing a casino player asks themselves when stepping up to a game is "how do I improve my odds?" The answer in Baccarat is easy: you don't. Other than avoiding the Tie bet there's nothing you can do.

What about card counting you ask? After all, everyone seems to do it on TV. Save yourself the trouble because it's a facade.

Statistical analysis has shown that card counting in Baccarat is totally ineffective until the game hits the bottom of the shoe and even then it's a minuscule advantage.

It basically boils down to paying yourself £10 an hour for risking £1,000,000. You're better off getting a squeegee and washing people's windows for spare change.

As to playing the game, that's it. As to knowing what's going on, it's a matter of strict and fixed rules, and here they are:

The Objective:

The objective of Baccarat is to draw a two- or three-card hand that totals closer to 9 than the banker.

10, J, K, Q count as 0, A is a 1 and all other cards are face value. If your total is more than ten, you drop the ten. So a 7-9 hand totals to 6 (16, drop ten). There is no such thing as a "bust" hand.

The Rules:

The banker and the player each draw two cards. If either the player or banker total 8 or 9, both automatically stand, no exceptions. If the player's total is 6 or 7, the player stands. If the player stands, the banker hits on a total of 5 or less.

If the player's total is 5 or less, the player automatically hits and the banker gives the player a third card. If the player receives a third card then the banker draws a third card according to the following:

Banker's hand totals 0,1,2: Banker always draws a third card.

Banker's hand totals 3: Banker draws if Player's third card is 1-2-3-4-5-6-7-9-0 (not 8)

Banker totals 4: Banker draws if Player thirds 2-3-4-5-6-7

Banker 5: Banker draws if Player thirds 4-5-6-7

Banker 6: Banker draws if Player thirds 6-7

Banker 7: Banker stands.

As I said earlier, it's a bit like watching paint dry. You just sit there and watch the dealer deal cards.

Collect your winnings, or lose your shirt. Your basically playing an even money bet with a slight edge to the House, as there always is!

Vegas casinos 'whaling' for the biggest spenders
By Paritosh Bansal

NEW YORK, Aug 9 Reuters) - Casinos that "whale hunt" pull out all the stops to entice high-rolling players who can often affect a casino's revenue with a good hand.

Whales, once significant factors in a casino's profits, are losing their importance, as gambling centers like Las Vegas depend more on non-gambling features for revenue and casino companies increase in size.

Gamblers who routinely risk a half million dollars or more get the red-carpet treatment from casinos. These whales are flown in on private jets, picked up by limousines and whisked away to penthouse suites where private elevators take them to exclusive gaming rooms with credit lines that run into millions of dollars.

Other perks include show tickets and discounts on losses, where the casino will forgive a percentage of the player's loss.

"You market to them one at a time," Bill McBeath, president of MGM Mirage's Bellagio casino, said of wooing the high-stakes gamblers who are willing to part with big bucks.

The stakes are high. A few high rollers can either leave a dent in a casino's revenue or boost its profits. But while there are more whales than ever, their hold on a casino company's overall fortunes has waned.

Consolidation in the industry over the last few years has created behemoths such as Harrah's Entertainment Inc. and MGM Mirage, who due to their size and mass markets are less susceptible to the vagaries of Lady Luck.

"The average Joe coming in and leaving $50 or $100 basically pays for operating the place," Pinnacle Entertainment Inc. Chief Executive Daniel Lee said. "And the high end is your profit."

Las Vegas casinos also now get more than half of their revenue from non-gambling sources, such as hotel rooms, retail and food and beverage sales -- further weakening the whales' impact.

Yet the high-roller business remains a game of chance.

MATTER OF LUCK

Peter Dunay, chief investment strategist at the Leeb Group, remembers seeing baccarat tables at casinos where players needed to have at least $250,000 to take a seat.

"These people were playing easily with a million (dollars) and up," Dunay said. "They give $25,000 chips as tips to people."

High rollers can bet as much as $100,000 or more per hand and can win or lose millions at a time, and it takes just a few of them to substantially swing a casino's revenue.

Las Vegas Sands Corp. and Wynn Resorts Ltd. , which own one casino each in Las Vegas and cater to high rollers, both said in the second quarter that gamblers' winning streaks hurt revenue.

Las Vegas Sands said table games' win percentage -- or the amount of money it won from gamblers -- at its Venetian Resort Hotel Casino was 17.6 percent, compared with its expected range of 20 percent to 22 percent.

On a table drop -- the amount of money exchanged for chips -- of $254.2 million in the quarter, the casino would have lost roughly $7 million to $8 million in revenue due to luck, Majestic Research analyst Matthew Jacob said. That's about 10 percent of Venetian's casino revenue of $71.3 million in the quarter.

Similarly, at Wynn Las Vegas, lucky high-end players pushed table games win percentages to 19.8 percent, on the lower end of the expected range of 19 percent to 22 percent.

"Both the results ... underscore the volatility that's inherent when you do cater to high rollers," Jacob said. "A casino can have a swing in luck much like an individual gambler does."

Not everyone wants to deal with that kind of volatility.

Aztar Corp. , owner of Tropicana Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, decided to exit the business of high rollers in the early 1990s after it got too competitive, a spokesman said.

But when the mass market weakens, the whales can also shore up revenue. Bellagio saw a lucky streak in the quarter, helping MGM Mirage post healthy profits amid a slowing overall market in Las Vegas, Jacob said.

THE WHALES

Casinos are reticent when it comes to talking about who the whales are, citing immense competition among companies to tap into this high-margin business.

But Bellagio's McBeath said the number of whales has increased over the years. A few years ago, MGM said there were about 200 whales worldwide.

"There is a much greater representation of high net worth individuals willing to risk seven-figure amounts on a trip," McBeath said. "And their corresponding betting limits have been raised as well."

Many of the whales come from Asia, and Las Vegas casinos -- companies such as Wynn, Las Vegas Sands and MGM Mirage -- are capitalizing by setting their sights on the booming Chinese gambling enclave of Macau.

As these companies get even bigger, the risks that come with betting millions in a trip will be reduced -- for the casinos.

"It used to be that Caesars Palace would have great variability in its income based on high rollers," Pinnacle's Lee said. "It's still probably true, but it's buried into this monolith called Harrah's."
