Businessman, jockey charged with bribery

A BUSINESSMAN and an apprentice jockey were charged in a district court on Friday with 11 counts of corruption each.
Cogan Swee Yong Huat, 56, is alleged to have corruptly given a total of about $2,470 to apprentice jockey Mohamad Azrull Mohamad Sani for stable information about race horses which was not publicly available.
Azrull, 24, claimed trial to the 11 charges of accepting between $200 and $450 from Swee between December 2004 and March 2005, in return for communicating the information.
A pre-trial conference on Feb 10 has been fixed for Swee's case. He was represented by Mr Lim Kia Tong. Azrull will be back in court on Friday Dec 17.
If convicted, each of them can be fined up to $100,000 and/or jailed for up to five years per charge.
