Miss Tan, who was about to start her third year of a medical degree at Cambridge’s Peterhouse College, landed at Gatwick Airport just before midnight on September 29 2010

Mingwei Tan, 20, had just returned from holiday when she was knocked down and killed by a double-decker bus.

The driver, Shahriar Firouzian, 52, told police he did not realise he had struck Miss Tan, and even stopped to pick up a passenger while the student was trapped under the vehicle, a jury was told.

He recalled running over a bottle and a fox on the road, which corresponded to the points at which the pedestrian was hit by and then eventually dislodged from the bus, the prosecution alleged.

Miss Tan, who was about to start her third year of a medical degree at Cambridge’s Peterhouse College, landed at Gatwick Airport just before midnight on September 29 2010 after a holiday with friends in Cyprus, London’s Blackfriars Crown Court heard.

The Singapore-born student took the N24 night bus to Hampstead, north London, where she planned to pick up more luggage from a family friend’s house before catching a 6am flight to Rome.

But as she crossed Pond Street outside Hampstead's Royal Free Hospital at just after 1.45am on September 30 she was hit by an N5 night bus with Firouzian at the wheel.

The bus continued for about 930 yards before the student’s body came free. Her wallet and mobile phone were found in the road near Belsize Park Tube station, nearly a mile from where she was first hit.

Paramedics tried desperately to save Miss Tan, who was president of Cambridge University’s karate club, but she was pronounced dead at the scene.

Hamish Reid, prosecuting, said Firouzian “totally failed” to see the student as he turned into Pond Street.

He told the jury: “I don't suggest for a moment that as Mr Firouzian started his shift he intended to kill Miss Tan. Of course he did not. Whatever your decision in this case he will have to live with this for the rest of his life.”

But he suggested that as an experienced driver, Firouzian should have checked his blind spots, particularly outside the entrance to the hospital’s A&E department.

When he was arrested, Firouzian told police in a prepared statement: "It was a perfectly normal journey so far as I was aware. I think night bus drivers drive over objects in the road, I try to avoid cats, foxes, rubbish bags and bottles.

"I think there was a bottle left behind the hospital when I picked up an old black lady. A bit later I think there was a fox just after Belsize Park train station."

Mike Money, a friend of Miss Tan’s from Cambridge, said she did not know London well and questioned air hostesses on the flight from Cyprus about how to cross the capital to get to Stansted Airport for her journey to Rome.

The engineering student said in a statement read to the court: “She was asking staff on the plane about buses and things because she didn't know how to get around after the Tubes had closed."

Iranian-born Firouzian, of Watford, Herts, who had worked for bus company Metroline since 2003, denies causing death by careless driving.

The trial continues.

LONDON - Driver Shahriar Firouzian told a London court he thought his double-decker bus had run over a fox the night Singaporean student Tan Mingwei was struck and dragged under the vehicle for nearly a kilometre.

Iranian-born Firouzian is standing trial accused of causing Miss Tan's death by careless driving nearly two years ago.

Jurors were told in court on Tuesday that in the early hours of Sept 30, 2010, Miss Tan was crossing from Fleet Road to Pond Street in Hampstead, north-west London, when she was hit by the bus, which had turned right into Pond Street.

The prosecution contends that Firouzian failed to keep a proper lookout as the student would have been crossing the road in front of the bus. 'He totally fails to see her,' prosecutor Hamish Reid told the court. 'She is caught by the bus and dragged underneath it towards the offside.'

He made it worse with his prepared statement. Completely devoid of any emotions. More appropriate if he hit a lamp post and not anyman life.

LONDON: The London bus driver on trial for a hit-and-run case that killed a Singaporean student told a jury on Monday that he had slowed his double-decker bus to three kilometres per hour when the collision happened.

Shahriar Firouzian is accused of causing the death of 20-year-old Tan Mingwei, who was a third-year medical student at Cambridge University, by careless driving on 30 September 2010. He denied the charges.

The trial, which is expected to last around seven days, began last week. Several expert witnesses have given their views during the trial.

The prosecution's contention is that 52-year-old Shahriar Firouzian did not keep a proper lookout for the victim who was crossing in front of his bus.

The court heard that closed-circuit television taken from the double-decker bus driven by Shahriar Firouzian showed that he had slowed down to about three kilometres an hour as he negotiated a bend and collided into the victim.

Testimonies were also heard from police and 3D modelling experts seeking to work out exactly the route the bus would have taken, and how it would have been driven.

The hearing continues.

Bus driver who ran over Tan Mingwei found not guilty

By Olly Barratt | Posted: 20 June 2012 2137 hrs

LONDON: The London bus driver on trial for careless driving which killed Singaporean student Tan Mingwei has been found not guilty.

The prosecution said there was not enough evidence to convict 52-year-old bus driver Shahriar Firouzian and they would not seek to take the trial further.

Blackfriars crown court has heard from the judge that there was no realistic prospect of a conviction for Mr Firouzian, and a verdict of not guilty has been formally entered by the judge.

The jury has been discharged.

Ms Tan was hit by a bus in Hampstead, North London, on 30 September 2010.

Mr Firouzian, who is from North London, denies causing death by careless driving and he told the court that he thought he ran over a bottle and then a fox, rather than hitting a person.

He also said that at the time he had hit Miss Tan, he had been driving at only three kilometres per hour.

Family of Tan Mingwei accepts London court ruling

SINGAPORE - The family of a Singaporean student killed in a hit-and-run accident has accepted the ruling of the London court, which cleared the bus driver of all charges.

Cambridge University student Tan Mingwei, 20, was found with serious injuries on Sept 30, 2010, after being dragged for about a kilometre by the bus driven by Iranian-born Shahriar Firouzian.

According to media reports, Tan's father, playwright Tan Tarn How, said in a statement that the matter had run its course and what happened was an accident.

Mr Tan added that the family does not bear any ill feelings towards Mr Firouzian or anyone else, and he thanked the many people who have helped the family for their support.

Tan was hit while crossing from Fleet Street to Pond Street in Hampstead, north-west London two years ago.

Firouzian was subsequently arrested and charged with causing Tan's death by careless driving. The prosecution alleged that Firouzian failed to keep a proper lookout for pedestrians who could have been crossing in front of his bus.

However, the prosecution later said there was not enough evidence to convict the 52-year-old bus driver, and has declared that they will not seek to take the trial further.

At the time of her death, Tan was a third-year medical student at Cambridge.
