Tim Cook apologizes for Maps mess

To our customers,

At Apple, we strive to make world-class products that deliver the best experience possible to our customers.
With the launch of our new Maps last week, we fell short on this commitment. We are extremely sorry for the
frustration this has caused our customers and we are doing everything we can to make Maps better.

We launched Maps initially with the first version of iOS. As time progressed, we wanted to provide our customers
with even better Maps including features such as turn-by-turn directions, voice integration, Flyover and vector-
based maps. In order to do this, we had to create a new version of Maps from the ground up.

There are already more than 100 million iOS devices using the new Apple Maps, with more and more joining us
every day. In just over a week, iOS users with the new Maps have already searched for nearly half a billion locations.
The more our customers use our Maps the better it will get and we greatly appreciate all of the feedback we have
received from you.

While we're improving Maps, you can try alternatives by downloading map apps from the App Store like Bing,
MapQuest and Waze, or use Google or Nokia maps by going to their websites and creating an icon on your home
screen to their web app.

Everything we do at Apple is aimed at making our products the best in the world. We know that you expect that
from us, and we will keep working non-stop until Maps lives up to the same incredibly high standard.

As expected.
Apple knew the MAP have major problem. But keep quite until 5 million people order the phone online and start using it.

To be fair, in his letter of apology, he does ask his customers to use alternatives such as Bing and Google.
It takes a certain amount of humility to admit you've fucked up.

This whole rigmarole is not only Apple's loss but Google will in the process suffers a major loss of 100 million Apple customers. The main reason for Apple taking his apparently illogical step is that Google had refused to accede to Apple's request for map features that were made freely available to Android users. This game-play will likely backfire in the longer term.

Although Apple's new Maps missed out some important search features, these are more easily and promptly corrected because they are software programming related and only simple databases. More difficult to redress is the incomplete digitised map data which will take some time to resolve but if I were Apple, I would start off first with those markets in which they have the largest customer bases and within the larger cities and then move outwards. Hopefully, the largest number of customers will get full feature service within a shorter time.

Once the map data are fully up to date, Google would have lost a very important customer base.

Don't think Apple was trying to pull a fast one over their customers.

Google maps has been in the around for many years & Google has had time to fine tune it. The Apple maps is only version 1.0 & of course it is not as good. With feedback from customers the maps should improve over time & with so many iPhone customers out there, expect it to improve alot faster.

No matter how you feel about Apple or its products, it's always good to have another viable competitor in maps.

When there's real competition, there will be real progress.

Look at SG politics: no real competition. Complacency, stagnation, shoddy product.

I beg to differ i doubt he was willingly that humble more likely he was forced to eat humble pie with no other alternative out he just had to swallow the bitter pill.

Apple's strength was always in their design, from the ergonomics of the phone to the "feel" of the software - these are quite subjective and depended on their "feel" of what users might want. Mapping is quantitative and was never their strong suit. They should just have continued eating humble pie and kept on licensing Google's product. Although many analysts believe Apple's move to develop their own map solution is a smart decision in the long run, I think they've sacrificed too much customer goodwill and reputation by coming up with such a slipshod product.

If they continue with Google maps, it will be a second class Google maps. This is the politics Google is playing. I think in one to two years they will reap dividends.
