Malaysians impressed by the beauty queen representing them at an international pageant next month have been throwing a lot of shade Miss Singapore’s way.
While many have praised Miss International Malaysia Charmaine Chew, who will compete in Tokyo next month, they haven’t hesitated to savage her Singaporean counterpart, 21-year-old Charlotte Chia, who won the title in July.
Malaysians have been praising Chew, 22 of Kedah state, for her good looks since she was crowned Tuesday, likening her beauty to that of South Korean celebrities, with many expressing confidence Malaysia’s got a shot at going far this year.

In contrast to the stream of compliments Chew has been receiving for her “too hot to handle” good looks, Singapore’s Chia has been getting ruthless criticism, including one comment that she reminded someone of the television character Rosie Phua, the crass contractor’s wife from popular sitcom Phua Chu Kang Pte Ltd., played by actress Irene Ang.

“Why is Singapore sending Phua Chu Kang’s wife? Rosie, or whatever her name is,” user @Pringlespizie wrote Wednesday in Malay. “Don’t they want to win [this pageant]?

While comments about a woman’s appearance may be inevitable when it involves a contest about women’s appearances, many were harsh. Here’s a small sample of just some of the comments joining in the attack:
“Has Singapore run out of beautiful people? Just asking,” @JarrNadjmuddean wrote.
“Singapore should just send Taufiq Batisah,” @Shapitrazak said, referencing the Singaporean idol now famous in Malaysia.
“Top four [has] chance [at winning]. Bottom four … well, [they] can try lah. [But] why Singapore sent [an] Ah Lian?,” @Duurianne said, referencing a term used to stereotype Chinese girls considered low-class and associated with gangs.
Chia isn’t getting a lot of support from Singaporeans either, with many making fun of her as well, saying on All Singapore Stuff’s Facebook page that they were “stunned” to see her photo — but not in a good way.

Most of the Malaysians’ comments were posted in response to a now-viral Twitter thread by user Nadia J, who posted a collage of all eight Southeast Asian contestants heading to Miss International 2019, including Indonesia’s Jolene Marie Cholock Rotinsulu, Cambodia’s Kachnak Thyda Bon and Vietnam’s Nguyen Tuong San — all of whom have garnered Malaysians’ approval.

“You guys are a real clown for making fun of the Singaporean contestant,” @Aokyong said yesterday. “ She’s a beauty.”
“All the contestants look mixed, that’s why they’re beautiful … Singapore’s [contestant] has natural beauty, and everyone is beautiful,” @Yayaheartyou said.
Contestants from more than 65 countries will compete at the pageant set to take place Nov. 12 in Japan. Venezuela’s Mariem Claret Velazco Garcia was crowned last year’s winner, with Maria Ahtisa Manalo of the Philippines as first runner-up.

Aspiring producers, scriptwriters and directors! You might want to direct your attention here for a second. The Asia TV Forum & Market (ATF) is back with a bang for four days this December, and they’re celebrating it in a big way for their 20th anniversary! The event will be the ultimate meeting of the minds for content creators and entertainment enthusiasts alike, and there are no excuses to miss it. This year, attendees will have access to over 700 international exhibiting companies, insightful conferences, screenings and networking opportunities!
Now, a key tenet of this event is to nurture the endless potential of budding writers, producers and filmmakers alike, and connecting them to buyers from different countries — all part of the grand plan to bring global exposure to talents across Southeast Asia. If selected, winners will get to showcase their creative work and do a live pitch to some of the best in the biz at the event in December. Winning concepts will be awarded lucrative prizes in the form of funding and consultancy, and your work might even be brought to life.
Four different kinds of pitches are on offer this year, and if you’re a budding filmmaker, producer or scriptwriter, you best get a move on. We’ve listed some of the pitches you can apply for, including past winners who are making their mark on the big (and small) screen. We just want to pitch in and help you achieve your directorial dreams.

Hosted by ScreenSingapore, the Southeast Asian Film Financing (SAFF) Project Market makes its triumphant return this year, and they’re still accepting submissions for film projects. Applicants will be assessed by top executives from the likes of The Walt Disney Company (Southeast Asia), Hawaii International Film Festival (HIFF), Regal Entertainment, Inc. and beyond.
Since its inception in 2015, the SAFF Project Market has established itself as an indispensable platform for filmmakers in the region to reach international audiences. The sheer amount of talent available in the region is evident, with the program churning out quite a number of success stories from talents across Asia.
Who could forget Mikhail Red from the Philippines for his drama-crime horror film, Eerie? (currently spooking audiences on Netflix). It had its world premiere at the Singapore International Film Festival 2018, while Malaysian Bront Palarae’s One Two Jaga opened the 20th Far East Film Festival in Udine, Italy.
Kerwin Go, a fellow alum and finalist from ATF 2017, debuted his project Mina-Anud in the Philippines on August 21, 2019, through the participation of Regal Entertainment’s Marie Roselle, who met the project and its team at the market.
Since participating in first SAFF Project Market in 2015, Laotian Mattie Do’s project The Long Walk has been selected for the Venice International Film Festival and is due for release this year. Talk about going places!
Don’t forget, entries for the SAFF Project Market close on September 8, so go on and submit those entries, if you haven’t already.

The fourth installment of its kind, the ATF Formats Pitch calls for new and exciting originals, derived from unscripted or non-fiction entertainment concepts. Quirky variety shows, and innovative and imaginative shows will find a home in this competition.
It’s all about showcasing the best in the region and bringing content produced in Asia to international audiences. That’s exactly what phoSumpro! from Malaysia has achieved since winning the ATF Formats Pitch in 2018. Just a year later, they’ve fully developed their exciting variety competition Serenade, which is now being considered by regional and international broadcasters.
There’s still a bit of time before applications for the ATF Formats Pitch close on October 20.

The ATF Animation Pitch was developed with one of the most important groups of people in mind — our little ones. This pitch seeks original, creative animated programs with edutainment value for circulation within and outside of Asia.
The winning entry will receive a USD19,000 prize, inclusive of consultancy support from Green Gold Animation Pvt Ltd., the studio behind Mighty Little Bheem, Netflix’s first Indian original animation show for kids and the second most-watched original series worldwide within the genre.
Dreams really do come true — just ask the winner of the inaugural 2017 ATF Animation Pitch, studio2 Animation Lab from Taiwan whose project, Pigsy, is slated for release in early 2021.
Applications for the ATF Animation Pitch close on October 20, so don’t miss out on your chance to become the next Hayao Miyazaki!
Reaching a whole new market
To meet the growing influence of Mandarin-speaking territories and reach out to a more diversified audience, the ATF Chinese Pitch was created specially for all the Chinese scriptwriters out there. Applicants can compete under two categories of theatrical and online movies, and online drama series.
No worries if you don’t actually speak Chinese though, as scripts can be submitted in either Chinese or English, with the latter being translated to Chinese by the organizers for judging — all part of ongoing efforts to reach out to more budding scriptwriters and grow the industry.
The selected few will deliver their pitches to a panel of household names in the Chinese video industry, namely, Guo Jingyu, Group CEO of G.H.Y. Culture & Media; Chen Xiao, Vice President of iQIYI; and Xiao Ji Xiang Tian, renowned screenwriter of the online drama series, The Ferry Man and The Ferry Man II.
Winners will each get USD2,500 to help kick-start their projects, and could even be offered a USD11,000 buyout of their script.
Applications for the ATF Chinese Pitch have been extended to September 15, so get your entries in now!
Head over to ATF’s website for more information, and here’s to hoping those pitches hit a home run!
Keep up with all things ATF 2019 on Facebook and Twitter!
