Analysis of the data from the black boxes of an Ethiopian Airlines plane that crashed, killing all 157 people on board, showed "clear similarities" with an earlier crash of the same jet model, a spokesperson for the Ethiopian Transport Ministry has confirmed.
Key points:
  • French air authorities have been analysing data from the Ethiopian black box
  • Crashes of the Boeing 737 MAX 8 have killed 346 people in less than six months
  • Friends and family of the Ethiopian crash victims have begun funeral services

However, US officials have told Reuters they had not yet validated the data, emphasising "the investigation remains in the very early stages".
In October, a Lion Air crash killed all 189 people onboard, after pilots fought against the jet's automated nose dive.
Both planes were Boeing's top-selling jet model, the 737 MAX 8, and pilots in both crashes reported flight control problems during take-off.
In 2018, US pilots had also reported seperate issues anonymously to NASA regarding automated flight control problems, but no direct action was taken in response.

Concern over the plane's safety caused aviation authorities worldwide to ground the model, wiping billions of dollars off Boeing's market value.
At present, Boeing is continuing to make 737 MAX models, despite it placing a global ban on all flights of the aircraft.
About 5,000 737 MAX aircraft are on orders from carriers around the world, although some carriers such as Lion Air have suspended their orders until the model's safety can be guaranteed.
"It was the same case with the Indonesian [Lion Air] one. There were clear similarities between the two crashes so far," spokesperson Muse Yiheyis said.
"The data was successfully recovered. Both the American team and our [Ethiopian] team validated it. The Minister thanked the French Government.
"We will let you know more after three or four days."

Under international rules, a preliminary report on the crash must be released within 30 days.
The Seattle Times reported that the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) "pushed the agency's safety engineers to delegate safety assessments to Boeing itself".
The report said this decision led engineers to "understate" the power of the 737 MAX 8's automated anti-stall system, known as MCAS (Manoeuvring Characteristics Augmentation System), which pushes the plane down if it detects a sharp vertical climb that could risk stalling the plane.
After the Ethiopian Airlines crash, aviation experts and pilots pointed to the MAX 8's MCAS as one potential reason for the accidents.
The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has said satellite-based tracking data shows that the movements of the Ethiopian Airlines flight were similar to those of October's Lion Air crash.
The planes in both crashes flew with erratic altitude changes that indicated the pilots struggled to override fatal nose dives triggered by automated controls.
After the Ethiopian Airlines crash, aviation experts and pilots have pointed to the MAX 8's low-altitude warning system — where the plane automatically tips the plane down to prevent it from stalling — as one potential reason for the accidents.
What we know about the 737 MAX

Boeing's newest version of its most popular plane, the 737 MAX, is again in the spotlight after another deadly crash minutes after take-off.

A FAA spokesperson did not respond to the newspaper's queries 11 days before the fatal Ethiopian Airlines accident, who cited a "busy week".
The FAA declined to comment on the report but referred to previous statements about the certification process.
It has said the 737 MAX certification process followed the FAA's standard certification process.
While Boeing has repeatedly expressed confidence in the aircraft's safety, it is now working on a software update with the FAA amid suspicions that faulty sensors and software contributed to the two crashes that killed 346 people in less than six months.
Thousands mourn dead in Addis Ababa

Meanwhile, thousands mourned the Ethiopian plane crash victims on Sunday (local time), accompanying 17 empty caskets draped in the national flag through the streets of the capital as some victims' relatives fainted and fell to the ground.
The service came one day after officials began delivering bags of earth to family members of the 157 victims of the crash instead of the remains of their loved ones, because the identification process is expected to take such a long time.
Family members confirmed they were given a 1 kilogram sack of scorched earth taken from the crash site.
Many relatives already have gathered at the rural, dusty crash site outside Ethiopia's capital, Addis Ababa.

The victims of Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302 came from 35 countries and included luminaries in literature, botany and numerous humanitarian workers.
Elias Bilew said he had worked with one of the victims, Sintayehu Shafi, for the past eight years.
"He was such a good person; he doesn't deserve this. He was the pillar for his whole family," Mr Bilew said.

WASHINGTON (AFP) - Similarities between the Lion Air and Ethiopian Airlines crashes, confirmed by black box data, have focused attention on an anti-stalling system used in the new Boeing 737 Max 8 aircraft.
The Maneuvering Characteristics Augmentation System (MCAS) is an automated safety feature on the 737 Max 8 designed to prevent the plane from entering into a stall, or losing lift.
Both the Lion Air jet, which crashed in October, killing 189 people, and the Ethiopian Airlines aircraft, which went down a week ago Sunday, leaving 157 people dead, were fitted with the system.
Both planes experienced similarly erratic steep climbs and descents and fluctuating airspeeds before crashing shortly after takeoff.
A malfunction of the system was implicated in the Lion Air accident in Indonesia.
The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said findings from the crash site and "newly refined satellite data" warranted "further investigation of the possibility of a shared cause for the two incidents."

The 737 Max 8 and 9 have been grounded worldwide since the Ethiopia crash, and on Friday industry sources said Boeing plans to upgrade the MCAS system in the "coming weeks."

Boeing's safety analysis of 737 Max flight control had crucial flaws
MCAS was introduced by Boeing on the 737 Max 8 because its heavier, more fuel-efficient engines changed the aerodynamic qualities of the workhorse aircraft and can cause the plane's nose to pitch up in certain conditions during manual flight.
Angle of attack sensors on the aircraft tell the MCAS to automatically point the nose of the plane down if it is in danger of going into a stall.
This is done through horizontal stabilizers on the plane's tail which are activated by the aircraft's flight control computer.
According to Boeing, MCAS does not control the plane during normal flight but "improves the behavior of the airplane" during "non-normal" situations.
These could be steep turns or after takeoff when a plane is climbing with flaps up at speeds that are close to stall speed.
According to the flight data recorder, the pilots of Lion Air Flight 610 struggled to control the aircraft as the automated MCAS system repeatedly pushed the plane's nose down following takeoff.
The pilots of the Ethiopian Airlines plane reported similar difficulty before the aircraft plunged into the ground shortly after takeoff.
Boeing was criticised
A preliminary report on the Lion Air Flight 610 accident blamed it in part on a faulty angle of attack sensor that triggered the MCAS system and automatically forced the plane's nose down.
Pilots flying the same Lion Air plane the previous day had managed to override the automated flight control system.

Boeing came in for some criticism after the Lion Air crash for allegedly failing to adequately inform 737 pilots about the functioning of MCAS or provide training about the system.
Following the Lion Air crash, Boeing issued a bulletin to airlines operating the 737 Max 8 advising pilots how to override the MCAS system.
The US aircraft manufacturer issued a statement on Monday saying it was too early to understand the cause of the Ethiopian Airlines accident.
Boeing also said it was working on software updates to the MCAS system which would be deployed across the 737 Max fleet.
It said procedures already exist to "safely handle the unlikely event of erroneous data coming from an angle of attack (AOA) sensor," the suspected cause of the Lion Air crash.
"The pilot will always be able to override the flight control law (MCAS) using electric trim or manual trim," the aircraft manufacturer said.
Boeing has described the Max series as its fastest-selling family of planes, with more than 5,000 orders placed to date from about 100 customers.
But not since the 1970s - when the McDonnell Douglas DC-10 suffered successive fatal incidents - has a new model been involved in two deadly accidents in such a short period.

Ethiopian Airlines 737 MAX crash had 'clear similarities' with Lion Air crash

Black box data from last weekend's Ethiopian Airlines plane crash has indicated "clear similarities" with October's Lion Air jet crash. The MAX 8 crashed shortly after takeoff, killing everybody on board.

Ethiopia's transport minister said on Sunday that flight recorder data indicated "clear similarities" exist between last week's Ethiopian Airlines plane crash and the downing of a Lion Air plane in October. Dagmawit Moges told reporters the parallels will be the "subject of further study during the investigation."

Both crashes involved the same model of plane — Boeing's 737 MAX 8 — and both pilots reported flight control issues, causing aviation authorities to ground the model around the world.

France's Bureau of Enquiry and Analysis for Civil Aviation Safety (BEA) is working with US and Ethiopian investigators to determine what brought down the plane.

Thousands of Ethiopians gathered at the capital's Holy Trinity Cathedral on Sunday for a funeral mass to honor the victims.

Data recovered from the blackbox of the Ethiopian Airlines Boeing 737 MAX 8 that crashed on March 10 has "clear similarities" with October's Lion Air crash, according to officials in Ethiopia.
The flight was only in the air for a few minutes before it crashed, killing all 157 people onboard.
The crash has been linked to a Lion Air crash in October that involved the same aircraft type and claimed the lives of 189 people.
"There were clear similarities between the two crashes so far," Ethiopian transport ministry spokesman Muse Yiheyis told Reuters.
"The data was successfully recovered. Both the American team and our team validated it. The minister thanked the French government. We will let you know more after three or four days."
United States officials have told Reuters that the Federal Aviation Administration has not yet validated the data.
When investigators, after reviewing black box data, return to Addis Ababa and start conducting interpretive work, the NTSB and FAA will assist in verification and validation of the data, an official said.
In Addis Ababa, a source who has listened to the air traffic control recording of the plane's communications said flight 302 had an unusually high speed after take-off before the captain asked to return to the airport.
The Seattle Times has reported that Boeing's safety analysis of a new flight control system on 737 MAX jets had several crucial flaws.
Last week, Boeing said it would deploy a software upgrade to the 737 MAX 8, a few hours after the FAA said it would mandate "design changes" in the aircraft by April.
Under international rules, a preliminary report on the crash must be released within 30 days.

ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia — Ethiopia’s transport minister said Sunday that information from the flight data recorder on the Ethiopian Airlines jet that crashed last week shows “clear similarities” to the crash of the same type of plane in Indonesia in October.

Dagmawit Moges told journalists that the condition of the “black boxes” — the data and voice record — was good and that enough data had been recovered that her ministry’s Accident Investigation Bureau would release a preliminary report in 30 days on what happened to Flight 302.

“During the investigation of the FDR [flight data recorder], clear similarities were noted between Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302 and Indonesian Lion Air Flight 610, which will be the subject of further investigation,” Dagmawit said.

[Boeing had a best-selling 737 and a growing global market. Now after two crashes, its reputation is at risk.]

Initial data from the ill-fated Ethiopian Airlines flight as well as subsequent satellite information recovered showed an erratic flight path during the six minutes that the plane was in the air before it crashed into a field outside the capital, Addis Ababa, on March 10, killing all 157 aboard.

The plane ascended and descended and then ascended again, all the while flying at speeds well in excess of normal takeoff procedure. The pilot, Yared Getachew, was considered very experienced, with more than 8,000 hours of flying time.

There were enough similarities to the crash of the Lion Air jet in Indonesia in October, which also involved a Boeing 737 Max 8, that authorities around the world grounded the plane.

[Boeing’s CEO took home $30 million last year. After deadly crashes, he faces his biggest test.]

The voice and data recorders were taken by Ethiopian investigators on Thursday to France, where they are being analyzed by the Bureau of Inquiry and Analysis for Civil Aviation Safety.

Dagmawit said the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board also was involved in the analysis.

A preliminary report about the causes of the Lion Air crash pointed to erroneous data from a sensor causing the aircraft’s new automated stabilizer system to push the jet’s nose down. The pilots then struggled to pull the plane up, and it crashed into the Java Sea.

The minister’s comments Sunday suggested that a similar series of events may have caused the Ethiopian Airlines crash.

In November, Boeing issued a bulletin on how to reset the stabilizer if it started to push the plane’s nose down.

How Investigators Pull Data off a Boeing 737’s Black Boxes
EthiopiaCrash-Transpo-1130411380.jpg

To understand what happened to Ethiopian Flight 302—and stop it happening again—investigators will pore over data they recover from the Boeing 737 MAX 8 jet's black boxes.
TONY KARUMBA/Getty Images
In the five days since Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302 crashed a few minutes after taking off from Addis Ababa, killing all 157 people aboard, regulators around the world have grounded the Boeing 737 MAX 8. That’s a reaction to the fact that the circumstances of this disaster match those of Lion Air Flight 610, another 737 MAX 8, which crashed into the Java Sea in October, killing all 189 occupants. But to find out what actually brought down the Ethiopian jet, investigators must get to the vital data stored on the plane’s two black boxes.
Those boxes are the flight data recorder and the cockpit voice recorder. Both use solid state hard drives, with memory cards on a circuit board. The first logs all the details that together provide a picture of everything the plane was doing as much as 25 hours before a crash: the positions of various switches, engine settings, airspeed, altitude, and more than 1,000 other parameters. Examine that data and “you know what happened to the airplane physically,” says aviation consultant Kit Darby.
The cockpit voice recorder is what it sounds like: an audio recording of everything the pilots are saying and hearing. That can often give you the why of a crash, since it provides the pilots’ interpretation of whatever’s going on and how they’re reacting. Paired with the flight data recorder, it can give you the whole picture. “You have to combine the two,” Darby says.
Which is why they’re built to survive practically any type of crash. Honeywell, which manufacturers black boxes, says they can survive an impact of up to 3,400 Gs. (Unless you’re a trained fighter pilot, you can probably handle about 5 Gs before passing out.) They can withstand the pressure exerted by 20,000 feet of water—for two years. They do just fine in temperatures up to 1,100 degrees Fahrenheit as well as ice, so neither a regular nor a wight dragon can destroy them.
ethiopancrash-transpo-AP19073447070133.jpg

The cockpit voice recorder and flight data recorder from Ethiopian Flight 302 arrived in Paris on Thursday, where investigators will examine the data that could reveal what brought down the Boeing 737 MAX 8 jet.
Christophe Ena/AP Images
For extra security, the boxes ride in the tail of the plane, which is less likely to be damaged in a crash than the rest of the aircraft. They’re equipped with sonar pingers to make them findable if the plane goes down over water and they sink to the ocean floor. (The pingers helped search teams locate the two recorders that sank to the floor of the Java Sea when the Lion Air 737 crashed.) And they’re bright orange, to make them easier to spot.
Ethiopian Flight 302 crashed on relatively flat and open terrain, so investigators found the black boxes within a day. Because special laboratory equipment is required to access their data, the boxes were sent to Paris, where France’s civil aviation investigator, the Bureau d'Enquêtes & d'Analyses, will handle them. They arrived Thursday morning and the technical work of accessing their data began Friday. In a photo released by the French agency, the flight data recorder looks pretty mangled. That’s not surprising for something that’s been in a plane crash—they’re built to survive, not come out looking pretty. And in most cases, the crushed mess not a big problem.
The BEA lab workers start by opening up each box and removing the one-inch layer of thermal protective insulation inside. Once they’ve got the memory board out, they put it under a microscope—some of the components are just millimeters across—looking for damage. Then they put them into an x-ray machine, to inspect what they can’t see with the microscope.
That's a relatively easy recovery operation, but sometimes black boxes are hard to find and difficult to salvage. Take the case of Air France 447, the Airbus A330 that crashed in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Brazil in 2009 with 228 people aboard. It took investigators two years to locate the wrecked plane and its black boxes, which lay under 13,000 feet of water. The fact that an international team spent that long on the hunt tells you just how strongly the sky lords feel about figuring out what causes crashes, and how to prevent it from happening again.
And the fact that the Air France plane’s black boxes made it through their underwater burial at all tells you just how tough-as-mothers they really are. In fact, the flight data recorder came out fine. The cockpit voice recorder was in slightly worse shape. The French team reported a cracked capacitor and resistor, plus damage to two “decoder-type” components. Before doing anything else, the team put the memory cards into an oven to remove any moisture (36 hours for the flight data recorder, 42 for the cockpit voice recorder). Then they removed the damaged bits and soldered in new ones. It’s technical work, but far from impossible.
Other types of damage aren’t so easy to fix, Darby says. “If it’s crushed, you’re not going to be able to read it.” And damage to the memory cards themselves is more worrisome than whatever may happen to the other parts of the circuit board. “That may or may not be recoverable.”
In the case of Air France 447, once the memory boards were fully dried out, the lab workers hooked the cards up to their reader. (They’re one of the few places in the world to have one; the National Transportation Safety Board’s lab in Washington, DC, is another.) They downloaded and synced up the data. Then they got to work figuring out what brought down the jet. A year later, in 2012, they released their final report. The plane stalled at cruising altitude after ice clogged the speed sensors, the autopilot shut off in response, and the pilots mismanaged the situation.
Now that the black box process is starting over in Paris, the results could reveal what brought down Ethiopian Flight 302 and led to the grounding of the world’s Boeing 737 MAX jets. Nothing will happen quickly. Full investigations usually take about 18 months—but preliminary data released before then can start to shed light on what happened.

Relatives told news wires prior to the mass funeral that they were given small sacks of scorched earth from the site of the crash in place of remains.
Flight data from the Ethiopian Airlines disaster suggests "clear similarities" with a crash off Indonesia last October, which killed all 189 people that were on board and also involving a Max 8 plane, Ethiopia's transport minister has said.
Minister Dagmawit Moges cited preliminary data retrieved from the flight data recorder, or black box.
He said his government plans to release detailed findings of the doomed Flight ET302 within a month, according to Sky News.

Both jets flew with erratic altitude, indicating the pilots struggled to bring the aircraft under control, and in both instances problems occurred almost immediately after take-off.
Preliminary findings suggest the stabiliser of the Ethiopian plane may have been in a position to point the nose of the craft down.
None of the bodies have been identified as of yet, due largely to the force of the impact of the jet.
One family member told the Associated Press: "We will not rest until we are given the real body or body parts of our loved ones."

Relatives have been urged to supply DNA samples to help with the identification, which they have been warned could take six months.
Airlines around the world have now grounded the Max 8 following the second crash on March 10.
Boeing said in a statement that it continues to have "full confidence" in the plane's safety, but that it was recommending temporarily suspending operations of the entire global fleet of the 737 Max aircraft, totaling 371 planes.
Reports suggest that a software issue with the Max 8 may have contributed to the Lion Air crash by causing it to dive, with the aircraft manufacturer planning to release advice to airlines on how to spot incorrect readings.

The Ethiopian Air Boeing 737 Max crash had similarities to the Lion Air plane that went down off the coast of Indonesia about five months ago, the nation’s transport minister said, as scrutiny of one of the aircraft’s flight control systems continued to build.

A preliminary study of the flight data recorders show “clear similarities between Ethiopian Airlines flight 302 and Indonesian Lion Air Flight 610,” Dagmawit Moges said Sunday at a press conference in Addis Ababa. The findings will be subject to further investigation, and a preliminary report will be released within 30 days, she said.

The Ethiopian Airlines plane crashed March 10 minutes after it took off from Ethiopia’s capital, killing all 157 people on board. The accident prompted most of the world to ground Boeing Co.’s 737 Max 8 aircraft on safety concerns. Much of the attention focused on a specific flight-control system known as MCAS that may have thwarted pilots’ efforts to keep the plane from falling into a catastrophic nose dive.

In one of the most detailed descriptions yet of the relationship between Boeing and the Federal Aviation Administration during the 737 Max’s certification process, the Seattle Times reported Sunday that the U.S. regulator delegated much of the safety assessment to Boeing and that the analysis the planemaker in turn delivered to the authorities had crucial flaws.

The newspaper’s report was based on interviews with current and former engineers directly involved or familiar with the evaluations, all of whom asked not to be identified, and was under way even before the Ethiopia crash.
Boeing told the newspaper Saturday the FAA had reviewed the company’s data on the plane and “concluded that it met all certification and regulatory requirements,” and repeated that comment on Sunday in a statement to Bloomberg News. The planemaker, which is based in Chicago but designs and builds commercial jets in the Seattle area, had also told the newspaper there were “some significant mischaracterizations” in the engineers’ comments, the Seattle Times reported.

In a separate statement Sunday, Boeing Chief Executive Officer Dennis Muilenburg made his fullest public comments to date, reiterating the company’s sympathies for the affected families and support for the investigation.

“While investigators continue to work to establish definitive conclusions, Boeing is finalizing its development of a previously announced software update and pilot training revision that will address the MCAS flight control law’s behavior in response to erroneous sensor inputs,” Muilenburg said in the statement.

The airline’s shares declined about 10 percent last week, closing at $378.99 on March 15.
Safety Analysis

Boeing’s System Safety Analysis of the flight control software -- suspected to have contributed to the Lion Air jetliner crash in October and also under the spotlight in the Ethiopia accident -- understated the power of the system, the engineers told the Seattle Times. The newspaper said the analysis also failed to account for how the system could reset itself each time a pilot responded -- in essence, gradually ratcheting the horizontal stabilizer into a dive position. FAA technical experts told the newspaper that as the agency’s certification of the 737 Max proceeded, managers prodded them to speed up the process as development of the model was nine months behind that of rival Airbus’s A320neo.

The Seattle Times said the safety analysis ranked a potential failure of the Maneuvering Characteristics Augmentation System, or MCAS, as “hazardous,” one step below “catastrophic.” But even that designation should have been enough to prod reliance on more than just one input sensor, the engineers told the newspaper.
“The FAA’s aircraft certification processes are well established and have consistently produced safe aircraft designs,” the agency said in a statement Sunday. “The 737 Max certification program followed the FAA’s standard certification process.”
As far as MCAS goes, the FAA said, the periodic training required of all U.S. commercial pilots includes how to handle events where there are unexpected movements of the horizontal stabilizer. “A nose-down scenario resulting from an issue with the MCAS system would have the same characteristics as a runaway stabilizer trim scenario,” the safety regulator said. “A proper response to a runaway stabilizer trim scenario would resolve a situation resulting from either a stabilizer trim issue or an MCAS issue.”

Send the box to Europe, home of air bus sure say both crashes similar. Send to US will say not similar. If you send to China, will say the plane is critically fucked up should buy China planes.

So at the end the victims are fucked either way.

Ang Moh are no longer trusted, even Niggers smarten up today!

For these 737 Max cases, all are crashed very near to airport where they took off. So even without the black boxes, there are clear radars and control tower voice recorders, already told the basic facts, what were their speed, altitude, locations, and what were the conversation between pilots and towers.

Lion Air pilots sent MAYDAY MSGs, Niggers had no time to Kao Peh Kao Bu.

In near future the Chinese will have LIVE 5G data connections to civilian jets, so live data can be recorded without need to find black-boxes to know what happened when flights are lost. Even 4K VIDEO STEAMS can be LIVE. What we are now using are IRONICALLY OUTDATED SYSTEMS! VHF Radios of AM WW1 technologies are linking cockpit & towers, imagine that for TODAY's technologies!

Today strictly speaking, NO COMMERCIAL PILOTS ARE NECESSARY, and MUCH SAFER if AUTO-PILOTS & REMOTE PILOTS flies jets. Military are already doing that and found very reliable and can handle much more complicated missions and accomplishments. Pitot Tubes & altitude meters are less reliable than GPS & Gyro & Inertial Sensors, already many cases of ice frozen Pitot Tube fucked up badly, even when they had multiple redundancies.

BOEING & AIRBUS cannot get their software right. USELESS Chow Ang Mohs!

8be983692fea4d8faf523bbbc83e0cc4.jpeg

Esplanade crashed passenger aircraft black box data successfully exported Cockpit recording exposure

2019-03-18 08:42 Indonesia /United States /France

The French Civil Aviation Safety Investigation and Analysis Bureau announced on the 16th that it has successfully exported data from one of the “black box” stores of the Ethiopian Airlines crash aircraft, which has been handed over to Ethiopian investigators.

On the same day, Ethiopian officials said that they would speed up the identification of the victims.

High speed climb

The French Civil Aviation Safety Investigation and Analysis Bureau stated that it has successfully exported data from the cockpit voice recorder and will continue to analyze the data in the other "black box", the flight data recorder, on the 17th.

The agency uploaded a picture on the social media "Twitter", showing that the cockpit voice recorder has a bumpy appearance on the outside, but overall it is intact.

The statement said that the agency did not listen to the recordings of the voice recorder.

▲This is the black box of the wrecked aircraft that was rescued by rescuers near the Ethiopian capital of Addis Ababa on March 11. (Xinhua News Agency)

A person from the Ethiopian who had heard the recording told Reuters that the pilot of the crashed passenger plane reported the "control problem" to the ground control center shortly after takeoff. He hoped to obtain permission to climb to an altitude of 4,200 meters or more, or about 2000 meters above the airport. .

The source said that the passenger plane then flew at an "unusually high speed", and soon after the climb, the pilot urgently requested to return; the passenger plane eventually disappeared from the radar screen.

Since the air crash investigation did not end, the source asked not to disclose his name, but said that the control problem of the passenger plane was the reason for the pilot to control the aircraft to climb.

A Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft from Ethiopian Airlines was scheduled to fly from Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia, to Nairobi, the capital of Kenya. It took about 6 minutes to take off after the takeoff, and 149 passengers and 8 crew members were killed. Investigators found two "black boxes" on the 11th and then sent them to France.

Aviation experts say that when the flight altitude of a passenger plane is low, if the pilot encounters a problem, he or she usually chooses to climb to gain time to operate the passenger aircraft while avoiding dealing with complex terrain. Surrounded by the mountains around Addis Ababa, the north is the Mount Etto at an altitude of about 3,200 meters.

Full of aftermath

Ethiopian Transport Minister Dagmarvit Moggs told reporters on the 16th that he is awaiting the results of the investigation and will "do his best" to find out the cause of the crash of the passenger plane; however, such investigations usually take a lot of time to make concrete conclusions. .

She said that Ethiopia has begun to use the genetic information of DNA to confirm the identity of the victims. It is expected to last for six months, and agencies such as the International Criminal Police Organization will provide assistance.

According to Moggs, Esser has issued a temporary death certificate, and the official death certificate will be issued to the families of the victims within 2 weeks.

A collective memorial service for the victims is scheduled to be held in Addis Ababa on the 17th.

Moggs said that the National Transportation Safety Board sent 16 people to assist in the investigation, and the passenger aircraft manufacturer Boeing also participated.

The FAA Acting Director Daniel Elwell previously said that the existing information shows that the flight path of the Ethiopian crash aircraft and the Indonesian Lion Air crash passenger aircraft is "similar", and will judge whether the two air crashes are based on the analysis results of the "black box". Related.

A Boeing 737 MAX 8 passenger aircraft from Indonesian Lion Air crashed more than ten minutes after taking off on October 29 last year, killing 189 passengers and crew. In contrast to the two air crashes, the pilot reported problems to the control center and tried to return. After the Ethiopian air crash, dozens of countries and regions have been grounded or banned from flying Boeing MAX series aircraft.

Boeing said after the lion aviation accident last year that it will upgrade the flight control software of the 737 MAX series aircraft; the company said after the Ethiopian air crash that the software upgrade will be completed in the next few weeks.

A source told reporters that Boeing plans to release the upgraded software within a week to 10 days.

A troublesome autopilot feature believed to be behind two crashes of Boeing’s 737 MAX 8 airplane met all FAA requirements, the manufacturer claims. However, Boeing’s own safety analysis was riddled with flaws, engineers say.
Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302 nosedived into a field shortly after takeoff last Sunday, killing all 157 people on board. Last October, a similar fate befell Indonesian Lion Air Flight 610, which plunged into the sea, killing all 189 passengers and crew. In both cases, the 737 Max 8’s MCAS monitoring system is believed to have pushed the plane’s nose down automatically, throwing the aircraft into a dive.

Profit v passenger safety: Why the US was the last to ground troubled Boeing jets
There are “clear similarities” between the two accidents, Ethiopia’s transport minister told reporters on Sunday.
With the 737 Max 8 grounded worldwide, the MCAS system is now under scrutiny. A Boeing spokesman said on Sunday that the system met all of the Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) certification requirements, but a group of anonymous Boeing and FAA engineers told the Seattle Times that the FAA delegated much of the safety analysis to the company itself, which cut corners to deliver the plane on time.
Due to the plane’s relatively forward engine placement, its nose was liable to drift upwards during flight, a characteristic that could lead to engine stalls. The MCAS system was designed to make micro-adjustments to the tail’s angle to push the nose back down and counteract this.
Boeing’s analysis, the engineers said, understated the power of this system. By the time the planes entered service, the MCAS system was able to move the tail more than four times further than the initial analysis stated. Furthermore, the analysis failed to account for how the system would reset itself every time a pilot responded, allowing it to repeatedly push the plane’s nose down.
The MCAS system relies on only one sensor to read the nose angle. Had Boeing accurately assessed the impact of that system’s failure, such a setup would never have been allowed, the engineers said.

Substitute for Boeing Max? Russian MC-21 passenger jet to debut at MAKS 2019 Air Show
The FAA allowed Boeing to conduct its own safety analysis, and trusted the firm’s conclusions. Other air safety regulators around the world then certified the MAX 8 based on the FAA’s thumbs up.
Boeing did not refute the engineers’ claims, but said that “there are some significant mischaracterizations” with them.
Development of the 737 MAX was rushed, the engineers said, as Boeing was competing to bring the plane to market before Airbus’ A320neo. In this environment, the company allegedly cut corners. The MCAS system was not mentioned in any training manuals, and was expected to only kick in in extreme circumstances. Boeing’s insistence on its safety allowed 737 pilots to switch to flying the MAX 8 with minimal extra training, an attractive prospect to cost-conscious airlines.
One pilot said his training involved little more than a one-hour session with an iPad, with no simulator hours.
Moving forward, Boeing has promised to update the 737 MAX’s software, limiting the strength of the MCAS system and allowing it to take readings from multiple sensors. However, the Seattle company’s troubles are far from over. As the planes stay grounded, Boeing’s stock is falling and airlines are beginning to demand compensation.
The FAA, meanwhile, has said that it may take “months” for Boeing to apply the necessary software updates.

HmWt-hukwxnv0214181.jpg

Shenzhou side sails: Can Boeing 737Max crash provide new opportunities for China C919 1/19
View original image gallery mode

On March 10th, a Boeing 737Max8 aircraft of Ethiopian Airlines crashed 6 minutes after taking off in Addis Ababa. All 157 passengers including 8 Chinese were killed. On October 29 last year, less than five months ago, Indonesian Lions Flight 610 crashed 13 minutes after taking off in Jakarta, killing all 189 people on board. After the crash, the world was stunned, and nearly 50 countries and regions including China, the United States and Europe immediately announced the full suspension of the Boeing 737Max series. At present, China is developing the competitive model C919 of the Boeing 737Max aircraft. Then, will the Boeing 737Max's no-flying order make Boeing slump, and can China's C919 open a new day? This issue of "sheathing" came to talk about the Boeing 737Max was banned from flying.

Recently, the Boeing 737MAX8 passenger plane crash has received global attention. Regarding the fall, and the fall of the 737MAX8 of Indonesian Lion Air five months ago, many speculations point to Boeing's MCAS system.
Boeing 737MAX8 passenger plane crash caused global concern Boeing 737MAX8 passenger plane crash caused global concern

The engines of most transport aircraft and civil airliners are all of a standard round shape, because they must conform to the size structure of the engine's electric fan, as well as the smoothness of the engine's intake air and the aerodynamic layout of the aircraft. But the Boeing 737 series is a special case. Its engine intake is not circular, but a flat design on the engine's air intake close to the ground. Because the original design of the Boeing 737 caused the wing to be too low from the ground. In order to prevent the engine intake port from being too low to suck in debris, the starting port can only be lifted upwards.

To make matters worse, the 737MAX series uses a larger diameter engine. To prevent the engine from approaching the ground, the engine front is used, so the 737MAX series engine is closer to the nose. However, there is a disadvantage in that the center of gravity of the aircraft is unstable. The Boeing 737 MXA's control system adopts a static and unstable design, and the computer will automatically intervene when it encounters airflow and stall. This is also the main reason why many people in the aviation industry think that Indonesian Lion Air and Egypt Air crashed.
Boeing 737MAX series wing position is too low design is not enough Boeing 737MAX series wing position is too low is not enough design

The most obvious sign of the 737MAX is the new shark fin winglet. However, the newly-installed LEAP-1B engine has a large diameter, while the Boeing 737's landing gear is a small short leg. To avoid the engine being too close to the ground, its installation position must be moved forward and raised. But this also brings a certain head-up torque, so that the aircraft is always upturned during the leveling process. So Boeing also had to add the MCAS control system. Last year, the incident of Lion Air was likely to be due to this system. This time, the crash may also be related to this.

MCAS may be too sensitive. When it is perceived that the angle of attack is too high, it is possible to force the elevator over the pilot's control! According to relevant sources, it is very likely that the accident is that the elevator after the control has placed the aircraft in a subduction state. Therefore, the two accidents are that the aircraft is swooping toward the ground.

Of course, the real reason should be waiting for the results of the investigation. If this is the case, the design of the Boeing 737MAX is clearly flawed, and the future of the aircraft will be very worrying. But the 737 MAX series is the only single-channel airliner that Boeing can now come up with. In the aggressive situation of the aggressive Airbus 320NEO series, Boeing can only re-develop this level of single-aisle passenger aircraft in addition to MAX, which brings significant benefits to China's C919.
The Civil Aviation Administration of China has stopped all domestic 737max domestic civil aviation administrations have suspended all domestic 737max

The Chinese C919 aircraft design is the latecomer. It fully refers to the experience of all aspects, especially the Boeing 737's wing position is too low, can not install the engine at will. Therefore, for the C919, its starting point and overall design is higher than the Boeing 737.

The response of the Civil Aviation Administration of China was also very fast. The 737max has been grounded for passenger safety considerations. At present, all Boeing 737MAX aircraft in China are grounded for inspection to ensure the safety of aircraft and passengers. According to reports, we currently have a total of 96 Boeing 737MAX aircraft. For these airlines, grounding may put considerable pressure on daily flights.
China's C919 passenger aircraft can replace it with the Chinese C919 passenger aircraft.

Although there are so many problems with the Boeing 737MAX8, you don't have to worry too much. With the advancement of our industrial level and scientific and technological level, China's research on the C919 trunk aircraft is about to be put into operation, and the ARJ-21 regional airliner, which was put into operation earlier, has been in service for five years. American aircraft are not safe, we can choose domestic aircraft. (Author's signature: Little Point)

[Text / Observer Network columnist Shi Yang]

The most important news of the week may be the global grounding of the Boeing 737MAX series of passenger aircraft caused by the difficulty of Egypt. At present, the accident investigation has not been officially released, but the maneuvering characteristics stabilization system (MCAS) in the aircraft flight control system may be wrongly initiated to cause the crash of the aircraft, but it has been "scheduled" by the parties as the main cause of the accident.

Although this is only a civil aircraft, the importance of flight control for the modern aviation industry clearly deserves our deep thought. At the same time, the new round of military budgets of China and the United States has been released, as an important indicator of "great power competition." Obviously it is worth doing a comparison.

Flight Control Upgrade and Retention

On March 10th, a Boeing 737MAX 8 aircraft crashed in Ethiopian Airlines. This was the second air crash of the Boeing 737MAX 8 aircraft following the October 29th Indonesian Lion Air accident. The air crash caused all 157 people on board to die, including eight Chinese citizens.

Two consecutive air crashes pushed the Boeing 737MAX to the cusp

Because the passenger plane of the accident also crashed in a dive posture, and the accident model was the same as the Boeing 737MAX 8 type, coupled with the difficulty of the aircraft, the time was shorter and the time was shorter, and other Boeing 737MAX passenger planes were During the take-off process, the faulty start-up of the maneuvering characteristics stabilization system has been encountered many times. Therefore, the speculation that the E-Airliner is the same as the cause of the Indonesian Lion Air in 2018 is rapidly emerging.

Under the fear of continuous accidents and accidents due to technical defects in the aircraft, headed by the Civil Aviation Administration of China, the global multinational air traffic control agencies and airlines have announced the suspension of the Boeing 737MAX series passenger aircraft. In the end, even the FAA of the United States announced the suspension of Boeing. The 737MAX finally announced the grounding of the Boeing 737MAX series on an almost global scale.

Boeing 737MAX is an important model of Boeing's new generation, and its sales will inevitably be hit.

Of course, the accident and the domestic turmoil about the Boeing 737MAX grounding also allowed the major media and the media to give the public a wave of relevant civil aviation aircraft, especially the flight control system related to the Boeing 737MAX and the specially added maneuver of Boeing. The relevant situation of the characteristic stabilization system. Boeing's vulnerability in the design of the mobile stability system and the resulting "human-machine interaction" also undoubtedly reflect some of the limitations of the Boeing 737MAX design team itself.

From the perspective of flight control, the Boeing 737MAX can be regarded as a model with great progress in the 737 series. The previous three generations of Boeing 737 have almost changed dramatically in performance, letting a civil aircraft that first flew in 1967 until In the first 15 years of the 21st century, it still better meets the operational needs of major airlines. However, from other technical indicators, the Boeing 737 series at that stage has many backward places, one of which is quite important. "The Boeing 737 has evolved to the 737NG generation, and its flight control system still uses a hydraulic booster system. The contemporary Airbus A320 used telex flight control from the beginning.

The Boeing 737 has been a model since the 1960s, and its flight control system has been conservative.

From the perspective of the flight control system, the traditional flight control of hydraulic power is essentially different from the fly-by-wire control. In the traditional flight control, the pilot actually controls the aircraft's various aeronautical airfoil to control the aircraft flight. Each airfoil has a certain impact on the aircraft. If you want to control the aircraft to complete a specific action, you need to control multiple aircraft at the same time. The aerodynamic surface drives the aircraft for more complex maneuvers. The operating principle of the fly-by-wire flight control is more complicated. It is not as simple as using the air to operate the aerodynamic surface of the aircraft. Instead, the pilot inputs the command to operate the aircraft into the flight control computer, and the flight control computer gives the manipulation command after calculation. The pilot's requirements are met after the various control surfaces of the aircraft are integrated.

If the traditional aircraft control system is a modernized army that prohibits and speaks for a long time, then the telex flight control is a commission-oriented, task-oriented modern army. For contemporary aircraft, the fly-by-wire system can, in many cases, simplify the dual problem of “how do I operate the aircraft to achieve a posture” in the traditional maneuvering process, “I need to make a gesture for the aircraft”, which greatly reduces the pilot’s complexity. The frequency of operating a specific aerodynamic surface in the environment reduces the pilot's operating pressure, allowing the pilot to make more decisions on flight strategy.

For the civil aircraft with relatively simple overall operation and relatively complicated, the general work of the fly-by-wire control system is not complicated, mainly to meet the daily take-off and landing of the aircraft, and to impose various restrictions on the state of the aircraft. The wrong operation of the pilot affects flight safety. The main purpose of the maneuvering stability system on the 737MAX is to prevent the aircraft from stalling due to excessive angle of attack caused by misoperation. Although the current failure of this system has seriously affected flight safety, the actual use There are also many pilots who choose to turn it off, but it does not mean that the equipment is not necessary at the time of design.

QqZm-hukwxnu9757065.jpg

The worst ending of the 737MAX flight Boeing: 4000 orders canceled the loss of 4 trillion
March 18, 2019 08:03 Sina military
403

On March 10th, the crash of the Boeing 737MAX8 passenger aircraft of Ethiopian Airlines was almost like a bomb, which suddenly detonated the network. Boeing, one of the world's two major aviation giants, was pushed to the cusp. The crash of the 737MAX8 aircraft caused a global outbreak of doubts about the Boeing 737MAX series. US President Trump also announced on the 13th that it would suspend all Boeing 737MAX aircraft and announced that other countries' 737MAX aircraft are also prohibited from flying over US airspace. Today, the number of countries that have grounded the 737MAX aircraft has increased to 48, and Boeing is facing an unprecedented serious crisis.

In all fairness, the Boeing 737 is an excellent mid- and short-haul single-passenger aircraft developed by Boeing. It first flew in 1967 and has been developed for four generations. It is one of the best-selling passenger aircraft of Boeing in the United States. Can be sold for decades, it can be seen that the performance of the 737 aircraft itself is not bad.

Passenger planes are different from fighters. Once a passenger plane crashes, it will cause dozens or even hundreds of casualties. Moreover, as a special means of transportation, the aircraft often says "group destruction" and there are very few survivors to escape. Therefore, the safety of passenger aircraft is often a priority for aircraft design and manufacturing companies. The Boeing 737 series can continue to fly for decades, showing that its safety is not a name. However, why did the 737 family's latest MAX aircraft have two consecutive air crashes in less than half a year?

To understand the problem of the 737MAX aircraft, we must first add a little knowledge of aviation technology: the passenger aircraft should pursue the economy, safety and reliability of the aircraft. These elements are indispensable. Therefore, the civil aviation aircraft must first evaluate the design of the aerodynamic shape in order to obtain the optimal aerodynamic shape, so as to optimize the economics of the aircraft, and then comprehensively consider the safety and the reliability of the aircraft. Therefore, any civil aircraft is the result of a combination of several factors.

In order to ensure optimal aerodynamics, civil aviation aircraft generally adopt a lower wing design, and the engine is directly suspended on the wing, which ensures the efficiency of the aircraft is optimal. But today's aero-engines are getting bigger and bigger, and the original aerodynamic design of the Boeing 737, which began in 1967, has been unable to adapt to today's new engine sizes. The fact that the engine is too low from the ground can cause debris to be inhaled during take-off and landing, which can cause the plane to crash. According to common sense, this situation should be to lengthen the landing gear, re-engineer the design of the center of gravity of the aircraft, and ensure the safe distance from the engine to the ground to ensure the safety of the aircraft. But Boeing doesn't want to modify the original design. After all, if you modify the aerodynamic shape, the cost can be big. If you don't get it, it will be similar to a new design. Therefore, Boeing adopted a lazy way, just moving the engine position slightly forward, avoiding the lowest position on the fuselage of the aircraft, thereby improving the safety of the aircraft.

However, aircraft aerodynamics is the fundamentals of aircraft performance, and it is not an exaggeration to say that it is a matter of pulling the whole body. After Boeing modified the aerodynamics of the aircraft, the 737MAX aircraft became unstable, especially with a tendency to look up. This problem is caused by Boeing's modification of the aerodynamics of the 737MAX aircraft, which cannot be solved physically. Therefore, Boeing chose to patch the flight control software to add a program to monitor the aircraft's head-up. Once the aircraft is found to have a head-up trend, Automatically adjust the lowering head immediately. But this "security patch" has become the biggest flaw of the 737MAX aircraft. Because the designer writes the program code, it is above the pilot's authority, which means that once the system monitors the aircraft's head, it will automatically control the aircraft's dive, which is impossible for the pilot to intervene.

Last year, Indonesian Lion Air and the 737MAX aircraft of Ethiopian Airlines all had this problem. According to the radar monitoring data released later, the aircraft showed a big ups and downs before the crash. It can be judged that this is exactly the pilot’s The flight control system "wrested", but the flight control system won, and the aircraft crashed.

As one of the world's top two manufacturers of civil aircraft, Boeing's design experience and market feedback are naturally not bad, but due to the problem of the 737MAX aircraft, it is clear that Boeing has been hit hard: Boeing's stock price after the incident It fell 13% in 4 days, and this is probably just the beginning of a nightmare.

According to Boeing’s financial report, the total number of orders for the 737MAX aircraft is 5012 – which accounts for 80% of Boeing’s entire order contract! And these orders have only completed 376 so far, and 4636 have not been completed, worth up to 580 billion US dollars! At present, many airlines such as Indonesia Lion Air have planned to cancel the 737MAX series of orders. If these 4636 orders are cancelled, plus the compensation for the airlines that have been grounded, the economic loss that Boeing can see will exceed 6000. Billion dollars, about 4 trillion yuan!

Strictly speaking, Boeing’s problem is ultimately internal, because the 737 is so trustworthy that it is indifferent to potential problems, and it’s a big taboo if it doesn’t try to rectify the accident or even attempt to cover it. And the facts will also prove: "Get out of the mix, sooner or later you have to pay back!" Boeing will eventually pay for its own, but this one is a bit big, Boeing can afford it, I am afraid it is hard to say! (Author's signature: Bladed Military Blade / Totoro)

Recently, the Boeing 737MAX8 passenger plane crash has received global attention. Regarding the fall, and the fall of the 737MAX8 of Indonesian Lion Air five months ago, many speculations point to Boeing's MCAS system.
