SINGAPORE - A manpower policy that advocates hiring "Singaporeans first" will not benefit the economy in the long term, said Senior Minister of State for Manpower Amy Khor in Parliament on Tuesday.
Such a policy might result in employers feeling "constrained and unable to hire the best person for the job", she added.
That could ultimately hurt Singaporeans, if companies' manpower needs are unmet and they eventually decide to move out of the country.
"We are in fact putting the interests of Singaporeans first when we say that we want to grow the economy and job opportunities. But we need to be practical about how we go about doing it," said Dr Khor.

Singaporeans need to be Singaporeans first in securing their food on the table.
This bitch are missing the points of Singaporeans first which means put food on the tables for Singaporeans first, not for foreigners to come and steal Singaporeans food.
In time like this mess that PAP created, and with their incompetent son of old fart at the helm and kick him out asap.
She is a very popular MP. So to unseat her is quite hard. However she might be thrown out by Pinky.
Still can fuck her out from her $million pay. George Yeo was popular too but was eventually "Aljunied" by the voters. Which GRC she's in? Voters must kick this bastard fucking bitch out.
Its this "best person for the job" argument that got us into this mess in the first place. Firstly they are not necessarily the best but more likely the cheapest. It cost the locals jobs and their livelihood, their families to suffer and our society to fragment.
Lets also not get hung up on the economy that we forget the house is on fire.
I seriously do not know how we ended with quality like Amy Khor. I cannot recall anything of significance that she has proposed since became an MP and now she is a senior minister of state. And she is actually one of the better ones which becomes a scary proposition.
SFP should target her at the next GE. She can then at the PAP rally tell voters why she needs to bring foreigners.
