MOE camp stops water activities after croc sighting

Straits Times 22 Apr 12;

The Ministry of Education (MOE) has stopped all water-based activities at its Jalan Bahtera Adventure Centre after a crocodile was spotted in the waters off Lim Chu Kang.

The unwelcome visitor first appeared on March 29, said a spokesman for MOE.

Mr Sim Song Huat, who runs a fish farm opposite the centre, told The Sunday Times he had noticed a 2m-long crocodile  nearby. 'I saw it swimming around where the students usually kayak,' he said. 'I decided to notify the camp operators since it could be dangerous.'

The operator then reported the matter to the ministry. Schools that have booked activities such as canoeing from now until the end of the year have been told of the suspension, said the MOE spokesman.

But it appears there may be more than one crocodile lurking in the area . Mr Sim's friends from other fish farms had seen a bigger 4m-long crocodile  at a nearby pier.

In waters near Kranji Reservoir, other fishermen have also spotted crocodiles, Mr Sim said. He estimated there could be six of them in all.

The last time he saw one was about a year ago, he added, noting that in his 20 years of running a fish farm in the area, these were his only sightings.

At the nearby Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve, a few estuarine crocodiles have visited over the years, appearing in the water or at the mudflats away from the visitor routes.

'We suspect that they move about freely in the Johor Strait,' said Mr Wong Tuan Wah, National Parks Board's director of conservation. He advised visitors to stay calm and back away slowly if they encounter a crocodile.

Meanwhile, fishermen in the area seem unfazed and were still wading into the sea to cast their nets. 'They usually run away when they see us, so we are not worried,' quipped Mr Sim.

Maybe a false alarm.

Sporean students still dont know a big lizard from croc

Maybe you are right about our ignorant students.. But the ones who had seen these crocs are seasoned experienced fishermen.. Better for MOE to play safe by stopping all water activities there.. Any croc more than 2 m can well wallop a human being to be his next meal..

Could have escaped from the nearby farm. There is a big crocodile farm at Lim Chu Kang.

MOE might as well stop all waterbased activities there then. It is the reptile's natural habitat and they're always going to be around.

BTW, seeing such a rare animal nowadays off Sg's coast is exceptionally lucky. They avoid humans.

Cheers!

In the mid 1990s, I was happily playing soccer on the school pitch one afternoon. The ball rolled out of play and I went to retrieve it. Less than 2 meters away from the ball was a COBRA. A snake with a hood, forked tongue and beady eyes, poised to strike - there was absolutely no mistake about it. I was lucky that the snake didn't attack or chased after me, otherwise I probably won't be typing this now.

Few years ago, had a similiar experience once while walkin the dog during the nite.. Thought it was a twig, but I realised that it was a small cobra hissing menacingly at me.. As I have a phobia for snakes, I quickly shouted at the top of my voice..:o :o :o My dog nearly lunged at the cobra but I managed to pull him away.. The cobra later slithered into a small longkang..

Cobras are really common here. My oz colleague once rented those black and white colonial bungalows and he'd encounter them almost everyday, from big ones to babies. When asked if his wife and kids are afraid, they replied they're used to having King Browns in their backyards back home.' Just be sensible and don't be such a big girl' was a standard response

Most Aussies are very knowledgable about snakes since Australia is the home to many of the world's poisonous snakes.. My mom in law used to have problems with these snakes slithering in the longkang outside her house near to Changi's Mariam Way.. Sometimes, a stray small python would make its way to her garden during the monsoon season.. She had to call the pest company a few times to eradicate the problem.. Few years ago, her next door neighbour found a 2 m long python lying behind his TV rack.. Luckily he was alerted by it thru his dog's barking..Being a retired ex Guards officer, he duly grabbed hold of the python, put it in a pillow case, and tied it up.. He later handed it over to a Bangla road sweeper to be released back into the wild..

Maybe the crocs came from the Johore waters.. Years back there was also a big croc spotted in a Tuas shipyard lazing around.. It was not reported in the news.. Few Thai general workers tried to lasso the croc for the fun of it..But the croc refused to entertain them and swam further back into the waters

if the cobra rear up its body, it only warning u to stay away. if the cobra had intended to strike, u wont see it in the first place.

i stayed in kampong or rural place for the first 12yrs of my life and i never even see a cobra b4. see plenty of pythons and monitors though.
