SINGAPORE: At least 220 people have been arrested since the start of the year for involvement in unlicensed moneylending activities.
Releasing the figures, police also said the number of harassment cases has fallen.
In 2011, there were some 11,780 cases. The number fell to about 8,990 last year.
In the same year, some 1,900 were caught for involvement in unlicensed moneylending.
Police also warned members of the public about unlicensed moneylending websites.
These websites tend to ask borrowers for their personal documents such as NRIC, passport or work permit number.
"Ah Keong", a taxi driver and former runner, said: "Once they have your contact number, they will have all sorts of ways to convince you to borrow money from them."
He added that when one realises it is illegal to borrow money from them, "it's too late."
