During Vietnam Wars, there were 2 quite distinctive types of Vietcong faced by US marines and GIs.

One is the rare NVA regular Army, Uniformed, better organized, equipped abd trained. Another is the huge numbers of guerrillas, non-Uniformed, not so formally organized and operated, poorly equipped, and poorly trained. Literally just part-time armed irregular peasant militants.

The big difference lies in the fates of American POWs, captured by different types of VC. The formal NVA will slightly practice of Geneva Conventions, and have some POW camp facilities. The guerrillas will treat POW exactly like animals, in ground cages, fish traps soaking in rivers, no food or pig food, abused tortured and stay very close to hell and death.
