A kindergarten teacher in Beijing has been detained for allegedly pricking the children in her care with pins, reports our Chinese-language sister paper Want Daily.
The teacher, in her early twenties, is accused of pricking misbehaving preschoolers as a form of punishment. She was sacked by the school and has now been detained by the police, the report said.
The alleged abuse came to light after a parent found multiple tiny stab wounds to the hip of her three-year-old when giving the child a bath.
More than 20 similar cases involving preschoolers being stuck with pins or needles have been reported across China this year alone. Some teachers are understood to favor the punishment as the prick leaves barely visible wounds and the quick but sharp pain is effective both to make the children behave and in many cases to make them afraid to tell their parents of the abuse.
In February, two female teachers were reported to have abused more than 20 children at an exclusive kindergarten in Shandong province, using pencils and toothpicks in addition to pins and needles. A similar case was reported at another preschool in Hubei province.
