Kenny Dalglish sacked by Liverpool

The Scot arrived back in England on Tuesday following discussions with the club's owners, and has now decided to leave his post as the Reds' boss with immediate effect

May 16, 2012 4:17:00 PM

Liverpool have have sacked manager Kenny Dalglish following the club's worst-ever finish to aPremier League season.

The 61-year-old received his marching orders after flying to Boston on Monday to hold showdown talks with Liverpool’s owners FSG.

Dalglish masterminded his side’s League Cup success this year - the club’s first trophy since 2006 - but failed to secure a top-four finish having been allowed to invest over £100 millon on new players since he returned to the club in January 2011.

Liverpool ended their Premier League campaign in ninth-place, a worst-ever finish for the club since the formation of the league 20 years ago.

In addition, their points tally of 52 points marked the poorest return since the 1953-54 season when the club were relegated from the old First Division.

WE NEED A MIRACLE WORKER
Jim Boardman | Anfield Road

Kenny Dalglish always said that he'd do what he could to help Liverpool FC. That he left by having his contract terminated rather than by 'mutual consent' or resigning suggests he still felt he could help Liverpool FC. If he didn't think so he'd have fallen on his sword.

The honeymoon period for FSG is now well and truly over. Liverpool are still waiting for that new stadium, the one that allows the club to compete financially with other sides with top-four ambitions. Liverpool haven't even managed top five for three seasons.

Other problems needed sorting before changing the manager and unless FSG intend to address them, urgently, they will need a miracle worker to replace Dalglish.

The Reds' claimed just six league wins at Anfield all season, the worst record at home in a league season since 1948-49.

Dalglish, along with director of football Damien Comolli, have been criticised for the inflated transfer fees invested during the former's reign.

Andy Carroll, who has scored just six times in 46 appearances, arrived for £35m, before midfield trio Charlie Adam, Jordan Henderson and Stewart Downing, the latter contributing not a single goal or assist from out wide during the entire season, were brought in for a collective fee of around £45m.

In a statment on the club's official website, owner John Henry said: "Kenny will always be more than a championship-winning manager, more than a championship-winning star player. He is in many ways the heart and soul of the club.

“He personifies everything that is good about Liverpool Football Club. He has always put the club and its supporters first.

“Kenny will always be a part of the family at Anfield."

"Our job now is to identify and recruit the right person to take this club forward and build on the strong foundations put in place during the last 18 months."

Chairman Tom Werner echoed the sentiments put forward by Henry, but reiterated the poor season the Reds suffered and the desperate need to improve sooner rather than later.

He added: "Kenny came into the club as manager at our request at a time when Liverpool Football Club really needed him. He didn't ask to be manager; he was asked to assume the role. He did so because he knew the club needed him.

“He did more than anyone else to stabilise Liverpool over the past year-and-a-half and to get us once again looking forward. We owe him a great debt of gratitude.

"However, results in the Premier League have been disappointing and we believe to build on the progress that has already been made, we need to make a change."

Wilshere wants Arsenal success to 'rub in Nasri's face'

The young Gunners midfielder has slammed his former team-mate for his outburst after the Frenchman won his first league title with the Sky Blues on Sunday

May 16, 2012 8:20:00 PM

By Will Turner

138701hp2.jpg

Jack Wilshere has criticised Samir Nasri for his comments in the wake of Manchester City's Premier League triumph.

The French midfielder had reiterated his reasons for swapping London for Manchester last summer, stating that his new club "never settle for second best."

But the Gunners starlet wants his side to go on and win some silverware next season so that he can "rub Nasri's face in it".

"I don't know what goes on in his head," Wilshere told The Guardian. "Fair play, he has won a trophy, but over the next couple of years our goal is to win a trophy and I can see us winning a trophy.
"Maybe he spoke too soon and hopefully we can rub his face in it next year."

Nasri had initially taunted his former employers, and hit back at claims that he left solely to earn more money.

"I hope they are watching me now collecting my Premier League winner's medal. I believe they have not won a trophy for many years now.

"I now hope the Arsenal fans can get on with their lives and forget me, they should celebrate their third-place achievement and I will focus on winning titles."

Wilshere also hailed captain Robin van Persie's importance at the Emirates Stadium and believes that the Gunners' sealing of third place in the Premier League will go a long way towards convincing the Dutchman to stay in north London.

"It’s important we keep him," the youngster declared. "Everybody knows what he brings to the team and also in terms of his leadership qualities. I think getting third place will help us do that.

"I know there are contract talks this week and I hope we can keep him in the team."

I do not apologise for 'RIP Fergie' banner - Tevez hits out at Sir Alex Ferguson

The Sky Blues offered a quick response to the incident on the club's open-top bus celebrations on Monday, claiming the striker "made a significant error of judgement"

May 16, 2012 8:07:00 PM

By Chris Davie

Carlos Tevez insists he will not personally apologise to Sir Alex Ferguson after the striker was pictured with a sign saying "RIP Fergie" during Manchester City's title parade.

The striker was caught with the banner on an open-top bus on Monday, with the message said to be in response to Sir Alex's claim that City would not surpass United in his lifetime.

City offered a prompt apology to the Scot and United, claiming Tevez "made a significant error of judgement".

Tevez issued a general apology for his involvement but has since hit out at his former manager.

"It seems like Ferguson is the President of England," Tevez told Ole.

"Because every time he speaks badly of a player or when he always talked rubbish about me, I never went out to say he had to apologise. When you mess up you should go out and apologise, but I do not apologise.”

The Argentine only recently returned to the first-team squad at City following a six-month exile in his homeland after allegedly refusing to come on as a substitute against Bayern Munich in the Champions League last September.

Manchester United programme fetches record price at auction

A memento of the Red Devils' 1909 FA Cup final with Bristol City fetches over £20,000 at Sotheby's, beating the previous record held by the programme for the 1889 final

May 16, 2012 9:55:00 PM

153198hp2.jpg

Fans may feel short-changed with the price of football programmes these days - but one has been sold for a world record £23,500.

The item, which was auctioned at Sotheby's in London, was issued for the 1909 FA Cup final between Manchester United and Bristol City.

The figure broke the previous sale of an 1889 FA Cup Final programme which fetched £21,850 in 2006.

"The 1909 FA Cup Final between Manchester United and Bristol City was Manchester United's first ever appearance in an FA Cup final and Bristol City's only ever appearance in an FA Cup final," auctioneer Graham Budd said.

"It is extremely scarce and the first time that one has ever been offered at auction. It was bought by a UK collector.

"With Manchester United a global brand, there was some discussion it might go overseas but it did not in the end."

Kagawa Premier League switch increasingly likely as Borussia Dortmund star puts his flat up for rent

The Dortmund player looks set for Manchester after a meeting with Sir Alex Ferguson, with the deal now even more likely as his flat in Germany is up for rent

By John Stammers

185762hp2.jpg

Borussia Dortmund midfielder Shinji Kagawa has fuelled speculation surrounding a possible move to the Premier League after putting his flat up for rent.

The 23-year-old has been heavily linked with a transfer to Manchester United, who have in fact been trailing the BVB player for some time now, as Goalcom first revealed in April.

A deal looked increasingly likely after Sir Alex Ferguson travelled to Berlin to watch the Japanese in the DFB Pokal final, where the Dortmund man scored one and set-up another.

The player's agent has also confirmed talks with the Scot have taken place, while Kagawa himself said that he would love to play in the Premier League.

In a new revelation, Kagawa has put his flat up for rent online. There is yet to be any interest but it is expected to be resolved soon, paving the way for a move to England.

United's current top Asian import, Ji-Sung Park, has been quoted saying that the attacking midfielder would do well at the club.

Galatasaray prepare offer for Manchester United man Park

Premier League giants are willing to listen to offers for South Korean midfielder, who has become surplus to requirements at Old Trafford after being dogged by injuries

EXCLUSIVE

By Wayne Veysey | UK Correspondent

Galatasaray are ready to follow up their interest in Ji-Sung Park with a formal offer toManchester United, Goalcom has learned.

The Turkish club have made United aware of their interest in the South Korean midfielder, who has become surplus to requirements at Old Trafford.

The Premier League giants are prepared to off-load Park this summer in order to make space on their wage bill for fresh blood, with Borussia Dortmund’s Shinji Kagawa among their leading targets.

The midfielder, 31, spent most of the season on the fringes of the United squad, starting just 10 of the team’s 38 league matches.

Given his age and the fact he has only a year remaining on his contract, United value the player at around the £3 million mark.

However, Galatasaray, who are looking to consolidate after winning their first league title in four years, have been made aware that Park’s current package is worth £65,000-a-week.

Speaking in Thailand this week, the Korean explained that talks with the Turkish club are yet to reach a formal stage.

“I haven't received an official offer," He said. "It is always a good thing for a player to be wanted by a team, though.

"I know I can't stay in the team just because I want to, but I still harbour hopes of retiring with Manchester United."

Park has made 205 appearances for United since joining them in 2005 from PSV Eindhoven.

United dismiss Glazer death rumours

Manchester United have announced that rumours circulating on the internet relating to the health of owner Malcolm Glazer are false.

It was claimed on various Twitter accounts that Glazer had been reported as dead by a reputable media source in the United States.

However, club sources have verified this is not true and the actual source of the story was also incorrect.

Glazer has not been a popular figure among United fans since his takeover of the club in 2005, which lodged a huge amount of debt next to the Red Devils.

The day-to-day running of the Old Trafford outfit has been overseen by his sons Joel, Avi and Bryan since the American owner of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers NFL side suffered a stroke in April 2006.
