Mancini signs Norwegian schoolboy, 15

22 October 2011

12427274850.jpg

Manchester City have completed the signing of Norwegian forward Bersant Celina on a three-year deal.

The 15-year-old, who reportedly attracted the interest of Liverpool and Blackburn Rovers, is delighted to have agreed terms with City and confessed that it is a dream to play in the top flight.

"This is a childhood dream coming true." Celina told Drammens Tidende. "I believe it will be very good for me."

The young forward is set to join up with Roberto Mancini’s side in 2012 once he has completed his schooling in Norway.

The new signing represents a change from the usual big-money signings that fans have come to expect at the Etihad, such as recent acquisitions Samir Nasri and Sergio Aguero.

However, the City faithful will be happy to see Mancini looking to the future to ensure the continued success of the club.

City are two points clear of cross-town rivals United at the top of the Premier League table after a comprehensive 4-1 victory over Aston Villa on Saturday.

The club will be hoping to retain their unbeaten league record in their derby clash with United at Old Trafford on Sunday.

Manchester Derby: More than pride

It is arguably the most anticipated clash between Manchester United and Manchester City in recent memory. And what's at stake is more than just pride.

After two seasons of tinkering and experimenting - Roberto Mancini finally seems to have built a City side genuinely capable of challenging for the title. It is early days yet but the results as well as the manner in which they've been achieved both seem to indicate that.

The noisy neighbours could get louder in the days to come.

Both sides of Manchester have been head and shoulders above the other teams this season, unbeaten and racking up huge scorelines while playing entertaining, attacking football.

City are currently top of the Premier League with 22 points, while United have 20 points after their 1-1 draw at Liverpool last week. This clash will likely have a bearing on the final league standings come May.

United have the psychological edge in this fixture having secured the Community Shield when the two sides last met in the thrilling pre-season encounter that ended 3-2.

The youngsters took centerstage then, with Tom Cleverley, Chris Smalling, Phil Jones, Danny Welbeck and Ashley Young shining to lead the Red Devils to a scintillating comeback victory.

But despite the blazing start that followed, United's performances have been less than impressive lately with scrappy away draws at Stoke and Liverpool allowing City to leapfrog them at the top of the table.

The Red Devils still maintain their 100% win record at Old Trafford, but will need to step up if they want a result against their neighbours.

In the blue half of Manchester, Roberto Mancini will be relying on their mercurial playmaker David Silva, star striker Sergio Aguero and the in-form Mario Balotelli, who has scored four goals in four games for his side to lead the forward charge. At the back, City are likely to be miserly as usual.

Sir Alex had an eye on this fixture since last weekend, resting Wayne Rooney, Nani and Hernandez against Liverpool last weekend and he kept Rio Ferdinand at home for the Champions League midweek fixture at Otelul Galati.

Mancini had the opportunity to rest his key men too. Aguero, Samir Nasri and David Silva didn't start against Aston Villa last weekend, while Aguero was also rested midweek, coming off the bench in the 2-1 Champions League win over Villarreal.

With so many big guns rested and ready to face off and so much at stake this Sunday, expect fiery exchanges as well as some champagne football.

Man United 1-6 Man City

Controversial striker Mario Balotelli provided the spark as Manchester City stormed Old Trafford to humiliate rivals Manchester United on Sunday afternoon.

Hours after more headlines about his off-field antics following a fire at his home, Balotelli struck twice to set up a convincing win for the Barclays Premier League leaders over 10-man United.

Balotelli also won the free-kick which led to a straight red card for United defender Jonny Evans before Edin Dzeko struck twice and Sergio Aguero and David Silva added to the tally.
United claimed a consolation with a fine goal from Darren Fletcher 10 minutes from time but they were ran ragged in the dying moments as City struck three times after the 88th minute.

City's stunning victory not only lifted them five points clear of United and underlined their title credentials but shattered a host of statistics. In recording only their second win at Old Trafford since 1974, City inflicted United's first home defeat since April 2010 and ended their run of 19 consecutive home league wins.

It left the watching Glazers, United's owners, hoping for better luck as they flew to Wembley by private helicopter to watch their other team, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, in the NFL on Sunday night. Balotelli had returned to the side after suspension in midweek as one of six changes.

United showed similar rotation from their Champions League win over Otelul Galati with fit-again defender Rio Ferdinand among those to come in while Phil Jones and Nemanja Vidic dropped out. It was the hosts who made the early running with Ashley Young twice testing Micah Richards down the left, winning a free-kick and a corner.

United threatened again when Young bent in another free-kick but Balotelli was back to head clear. Wayne Rooney went down in the box under a challenge from Vincent Kompany but referee Mark Clattenburg saw nothing untoward. Despite their quieter start, it was City who took the lead after 22 minutes through Balotelli.

Silva fed Milner and the midfielder pulled the ball back for Balotelli to place a low, first-time shot beyond the reach of De Gea from 18 yards, finding the right corner. He marked the goal with self-deprecating humour by lifting his shirt to reveal a T-shirt saying, "Why Always Me?".

United responded but Anderson and Rooney both shot straight at Joe Hart. United had another good chance when Rooney pulled the ball back from a Young cross but Evans badly miskicked. Kompany was booked for bringing down Danny Welbeck as United tried to launch another counter-attack but City held firm until the break.

United's problems then increased considerably as Evans was sent off within two minutes of the restart for denying Balotelli a goalscoring opportunity. Balotelli stayed on his feet until crossing the 18-yard line as Evans pulled back his arm but Clattenburg awarded a free-kick outside the area and then showed the defender the red card.

United survived the resulting set-piece and breathed again shortly afterwards when Clattenburg gave nothing after Richards collided with Anderson and appealed for a penalty. Another chance came as Balotelli picked out Aguero with a deep cross but the Argentinian failed to connect with a volley and Richards missed the target.

Young went close as United countered but his mishit first shot rebounded off Milner and he was rushed into guiding a second attempt wide. United applied more pressure with Rooney shooting at Hart again but City made their numerical superiority count with a well-worked second goal for Balotelli just before the hour.

Silva caught the home defence with a brilliant ball for Milner inside the area and Balotelli arrived unmarked to turn in his cross for a sixth goal in five games. Chris Smalling then made a vital interception in front of goal as Balotelli threatened to grab a hat-trick.

City were in complete control and claimed a third after 69 minutes as Milner played Richards into space on the right and he duly squared for Aguero to slide home from six yards. Roberto Mancini decided to take off Balotelli with 20 minutes remaining and he left the field quietly to take the congratulations of his team-mates on the bench.

His replacement Dzeko almost scored a fourth City goal within moments of entering the field with a low shot which rolled just wide. Dzeko had another chance as United were caught out again but De Gea produced a fine save.

United clawed one back as Fletcher curled in a fine effort from long distance but City upped the tempo with three more in the closing minutes. Joleon Lescott was free to cross at the back post as a free-kick was flicked on and the ball rebounded in off Dzeko. Silva then broke clear to slide the ball under De Gea before the Spaniard released Dzeko to complete the rout.

Fulham chief slams Hughes

24 October 2011

12427276270.jpg

Fulham owner Mohamed Al-Fayed has hit back at Mark Hughes' comments regarding his departure from the Premier League club.

The former Fulham boss told the Mirror over the weekend that the Cottagers lacked ambition and that the investment he sought to renew an aging squad was not forthcoming.

However, in an open letter posted on the club's official website, Al-Fayed blasted the Welsh manager.

"He is not just disrespectful but entirely wrong," Al-Fayed's letter read.

"Fulham has just announced plans for a splendid new riverside stand that will substantially increase the capacity of Craven Cottage."

"In every aspect of its work, Fulham is a progressive club with a top manager in Martin Jol, the man we had really wanted when Hughes was appointed."

The west London club finished eighth in the Premier League last term and qualified for the Europa League.

On the manner of Hughes' departure, Al-Fayed said: "He fully negotiated a two-year extension to his contract. On the day he was due to sign, he walked out without the courtesy of a proper explanation."

He also emphasised the help he gave to Hughes, adding: "Even when results were bad, I did not put pressure on him. I gave him every support - financial, moral and personal."

"We shall endeavour to prosper without him simply because, when the challenge came, it was not the club but Mark Hughes who lacked the courage and ambition to take on the task of leadership."

Vidic quits Serbia

24 October 2011

12427276400.jpg

Manchester United captain Nemanja Vidic has announced his retirement from international football with Serbia.

Vidic earned 56 caps for his country, scoring two goals. The defender stated in a press release that he was disappointed with criticism from the press and public about his attitude to the national team.

"I want to inform the public and sports fans that after consideration, reluctantly, I decided to say goodbye to the national team of Serbia," he told the Serbian FA's website.

"The main reason for this decision is that for a long time, especially in light of recent events, the media and therefore public, criticise my attitude towards the national team, even though I played for the national team and while I was injured, sometimes against the will of the people from the club."

"I owe gratitude to the fans, and all the selectors and coaches and team-mates with whom I worked in the past 10 years, while I was playing for the national team."

"I feel it is the right time for me to stand aside and allow the younger players to come through. I have always been very proud to play for Serbia and would like to wish them well in future tournaments."

Vidic's decision comes after Serbia failed to qualify for Euro 2012 after an away defeat to Slovenia. The defender's compatriot, Dejan Stankovic, also retired from international football earlier this month.

Gerrard outlines Liverpool goals

24 October 2011

12427276330.jpg

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard is eyeing a return to the Champions League next season, but says it is not the club's sole priority.

While conceding that playing Europe's elite club competition is sorely missed at Anfield, Gerrard says that winning silverware is of equal importance to Kenny Dalglish's side.

"Getting back in the top four is a priority, but I wouldn't say it's our only priority," Gerrard told LFC Magazine.

"Bringing those European nights back to Anfield is what we all want. Some of the best nights of my career have been in the Champions League and I want to experience a few more before I eventually hang up my boots."

"It's difficult to watch it on TV on a Tuesday or Wednesday night knowing we are not involved. Everyone here is striving to get back there and the sooner it happens the better."

"At the same time it's about trophies for me and I see the FA Cup and League Cup as also being very important. Because we are only involved in three competitions we have to focus on all of them."

"There is no European football so you can afford to focus more on the League Cup."

The last time Gerrard got his hands on any domestic silverware was in 2006, when he scored twice as Liverpool defeated West Ham United in the FA Cup final at Millennium Stadium.

And the 31-year-old believes that the intervening five-year period has been far too long.

"We haven't done well in any of the cups domestically since 2006," Gerrard added.

"It's time we gave the fans a bit of excitement again. They deserve it and there would be nothing better than going to Wembley. That would be fantastic for everyone."

Liverpool face Stoke in the fourth round of the Carling Cup on Wednesday.

FA to investigate AVB comments

The Football Association are looking into comments made by Chelsea boss Andre Villas-Boas about referee Chris Foy's performance in Sunday's 1-0 loss to QPR.

The Chelsea boss launched a verbal attack on Foy on Sunday after seeing his side end the match at Loftus Road with nine men following the dismissals of Jose Bosingwa and Didier Drogba.

Villas-Boas was unhappy with the sending-off of Bosingwa, who was deemed to be the last man when pulling down Shaun Wright-Phillips despite John Terry claiming he had the Portuguese full-back covered.

The 34-year-old manager admitted he was "very aggressive'' with Foy after accosting him following the west London derby defeat and claimed that the official failed to treat both sides equally, adding: "he (Foy) lost it.. he was card happy towards the (Chelsea) team."

It is understood that the FA are aware of the former Porto manager's comments and will decide whether or not to charge him with improper conduct by Wednesday afternoon.

Should he be charged and found guilty, Villas-Boas could be fined or even suspended.

Villas-Boas, who took over from Carlo Ancelotti as Chelsea manager this summer, has complained about the performance of officials in the club's games against Stoke and Manchester United, and said on Sunday that he felt his team were not being treated fairly by referees.

Tevez threatening to sue Mancini

26 October 2011

12427277110.jpg

Carlos Tevez is reportedly considering launching legal action against Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini for defamation.

City announced on Tuesday that they had found the Argentine striker guilty of misconduct by refusing to play in their Champions League match against Bayern Munich on September 27, and fined him four weeks' wages - believed to be around one million pounds.

Mancini said after the 2-0 defeat in Munich that Tevez had refused to come on as a substitute in the match, claims later refuted by the striker, who said he was merely conveying to his boss that he did not need to warm up.

Tevez, who has 14 days to respond to City's fine, continues to stick to that line and the BBC has reported he is considering legal action because Mancini's post-match comments were defamatory to his character.

City cited five reasons for their misconduct charge against Tevez, but it is believed the 27-year-old Argentine and his advisors take issue with each of them, paving the way for an appeal and legal action against Mancini.

Chelsea charged over QPR game

Chelsea have been charged over the behaviour of their players during their west London derby defeat at QPR.

The Football Association also confirmed they had written to Blues manager Andre Villas-Boas asking for an explanation of his post-match comments about referee Chris Foy and his assistants.

Chelsea stand accused of surrounding Foy following Jose Bosingwa's sending off in the first half of their 1-0 loss at Loftus Road.

That decision also angered Villas-Boas, who admitted he was "very aggressive" with Foy after the final whistle, later accusing the official of being "card happy" and failing to treat both sides equally.

Villas-Boas stood by his comments on Tuesday, insisting he had said nothing to warrant an FA charge.

The FA said in a statement: "The FA has today charged Chelsea with failure to ensure their players conducted themselves in an orderly fashion.

"This relates to an incident involving Chelsea players surrounding match official Chris Foy, immediately following Jose Bosingwa's dismissal.

"The incident occurred in their Premier League fixture against QPR at Loftus Road on Sunday 23 October.

"Separately, the FA has written to Chelsea manager Andre Villas-Boas and asked for an explanation on his post-match media comments.

"Villas-Boas has been asked to explain his comments on match official Chris Foy and the assistant referees.

"On both counts, the club has until Friday 28 October to respond."

Wright: Mancini will feel Fergie wrath

Arsenal legend Ian Wright has warned victorious Manchester derby manager Roberto Mancini that Sir Alex Ferguson will make him suffer for the rest of the season.

Mancini led his side to a 6-1 humiliation of defending champions United at Old Trafford on Sunday and in the process cemented their place as favourites for the Barclays Premier League trophy. Wright believes the win will only spur on the most experienced manager in the league and Mancini must be prepared for it.

Wright wrote in his column for the Sun: "Roberto Mancini is about to face his toughest ever test as a manager - dealing with Alex Ferguson's mind games.

"Kevin Keegan cracked under the pressure when taking on Fergie while even Arsene Wenger has struggled at times over the years.

"But after Sunday's unbelievable win at Old Trafford, Mancini will find himself in a position he has never experienced as the old master uses every tactic in the book.

"On a weekly basis, Ferguson will now look to pile the pressure on City and increase the expectation of the club's supporters."

Wright concluded that while Mancini has managed big sides like Fiorentina, Lazio and Inter Milan in the past, he has never had experience handling the wrath of the fiery Scot. He wrote: "I'm a massive fan of the United manager and his team. They will definitely recover from this hammering.

"You can be guaranteed that Fergie will keep stressing that the title is City's to lose. They are the favourites. That United have a long way to go to catch City.

"City, and I don't like this term noisy neighbours by the way, are in a terrific place right now.

"But they know that if they make any slips, then United will be right there breathing down their necks.

"Mancini's men still have to go to Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal and win.

"And Mancini faces a battle to deal with the fact that many City fans now expect to win the title even though there is a long way to go."

However, Wright stressed that he does not believe the rival managers will engage in any verbal sparring over the campaign because there's too much respect between the pair. Wright wrote: "A bit like Jose Mourinho, I think Mancini has a lot of respect for Fergie so I'm not sure whether they'll have any verbal spats over the season.

"But you can be sure, when the time is right, Fergie will lob the odd grenade towards City's training ground.

"I didn't think United played to their normal levels but you cannot take anything away from City. They were absolutely brilliant.

"City didn't fear United, which I loved, and this result will never, ever be forgotten by both sets of fans.

"But Mancini's players now face this major test over whether they can maintain the consistency you need to win the title.

"United's training ground will be an interesting place over these coming days, weeks and months.

"They will put everything into getting things right and you can be sure they'll be prepared when they make the short trip to play the return at the Etihad Stadium on April 28. That will be a fantastic match.

"For City, the war has only just started. And for Mancini, the mind games are just around the corner."

United are currently five points behind leaders City in the Barclays Premier League and will travel to Aldershot Town on Tuesday in the fourth-round of the Carling Cup.

City are away to Wolves in the same competition on Wednesday.

Ferguson unleashes "hairdryer" on United

Sir Alex Ferguson unleashed his infamous "hairdryer" on the Manchester United side that crashed 6-1 to Manchester City on Sunday.

According to reports in the Daily Mail, the Scot was furious with his men for the manner of their defeat at Old Trafford, and gave the Red Devils no doubts over what he thought of their performance, as he also slammed senior squad players for failing to steady the ship against the Citizens.

His ire was also reserved for Patrice Evra and Rio Ferdinand, who he blamed for a lack of organisation after the reigning Premier League champions went down to ten men with the score 1-0 in favor of City.

It was reported that the United manager blew up at his stars in the dressing room just minutes after the loss, calling them "f****** idiots', and demanded that the senior players report to the training ground for an immediate post-mortem.

Ferguson was also upset with club captain Nemanja Vidic, for playing against Slovenia for Serbia earlier this month, despite being out of action for United with a calf injury that kept him out for two months.

The 30-year-old then added fuel to Ferguson's rage by being sent off in United's Champions League win over Romania side Otelul Galati last Tuesday.

Vidic himself admitted that United were unhappy at his committment to his national side, and said as much when announcing his retirement from international football recently, after winning 56 caps.

"The basic reason is that my commitment for the national team has been criticised by the media and therefore by the public as well for some time,' said the Serbian.

"I've been under fire although I turned up to play for Serbia even when I was injured and sometimes against the advice of my club", he added.

The humiliation by City continued for Ferguson even after the game, as the United manager had a nightout planned for his coaching staff, taking them to his favorite hotel.

However, some went on to a nearby nightclub, and were flummoxed to bump into several City players who were out celebrating their victory.

Hopefully for the United squad, the manager's anger would have been somewhat assurged by their most recent 3-0 Carling Cup win over Aldershot on Tuesday night, as goals from Dimitar Berbatov, Antonio Valencia and Michael Owen gave them a comfortable win.

Corinthians seek Tevez bargain

26 October 2011

12427277210.jpg

Corinthians president Andres Sanchez says that Manchester City striker Carlos Tevez is on the verge of rejoining the Brazilian giants at cut price.

Sanchez claims that Tevez's new transfer value must reflect the controversies that have beset the Argentine in the last two months.

Corinthians have been long-term admirers of their former player and attempted to sign him in the recent transfer window before being deterred by a large transfer fee.

With relations having disintegrated between Tevez and City after the Argentine allegedly refused to come off the bench against Bayern Munich, Corinthians have redoubled their efforts to sign the marquee striker.

And Sanchez believes that this time they have a chance to buy Tevez for far less than the 40 million euros City recently sought for the player.

"Tevez has one foot in Corinthians, even if a lot of people don't believe it," Sanchez told reporters.

"He is not worth 40 million euros. Now you would pay around 18m euros after all the trouble he has faced in England."

Tevez was fined four weeks' wages by City on Monday for his transgression during the Bayern match.
