BANGKOK - Thai fire authorities said Wednesday that arsonists have set 20 locations ablaze in Bangkok, including a massive shopping mall, a TV station, the stock exchange, a cinema and bank branches.

"We have been receiving frequent reports of fires breaking out," a fire department spokesman told AFP.

Massive plumes of smoke were billowing from Central World, one of Southeast Asia's largest shopping centres. The offices of TV station Channel 3 and the Siam Theatre cinema in downtown bank were also ablaze.

The spokesman said many Bangkok Bank branches were on fire. The bank has been targeted in the past by anti-government protesters who suspect it of financing rival groups.

The government announced a night-time curfew to deal with any "rogue protesters" who ignore a call by leaders of the anti-government "Red Shirt" movement to end their weeks-long rally in the heart of the capital.

The government has accused hardcore anti-government protesters of committing arson attacks. Some elements in the movement are reportedly unhappy with the Red Shirt leaders' decision to surrender.

Protest leaders surrendered Wednesday and told supporters to go home after a deadly army assault on their fortified encampment.

A police spokesman said crack officers had been deployed with authorisation
to shoot on sight anybody looting, committing arson or inciting unrest.

BANGKOK - Thai anti-government protesters have set the offices of TV station Channel 3 on fire, trapping 100 staff in the building, a fire department official said Wednesday.

Military officials told AFP they had sent a helicopter to begin an airlift and were looking at the building plans to see where they could land the chopper.

"The building was attacked by the protesters and when we dispatched a fire truck it was also attacked. Now they have withdrawn so we have sent a fire truck again," a spokesman for the Bangkok fire department told AFP.

Channel 3 managers said the staff were trapped above a fire blazing on the sixth floor of the building, which is located on a main thoroughfare that leads to the Red Shirts' protest camp, which was stormed by troops earlier Wednesday.

"We are in a crisis situation now. Some 100 of our staff are trapped inside, the fire has engulfed the sixth floor," Channel 3 news editor Samran Chatto told AFP.

BANGKOK - Fires broke out at a major shopping centre, the Thai stock exchange and other locations in Bangkok Wednesday after an army offensive that shut down a protest camp in the capital, a fire official said.

Blazes were reported at Central World, one of Southeast Asia's largest shopping centres, as well as the Stock Exchange of Thailand, a branch of an electricity company, a television station and a bank, the official said.

The government announced a night-time curfew to deal with any "rogue protesters" who ignore a call by leaders of the anti-government "Red Shirt" movement to end their weeks-long rally in the heart of the capital.

The causes of the blazes were not clear but there were local media reports that some hardcore anti-government protesters had lit fires because they were unhappy with the Red Shirt leaders' decision to surrender.

Protest leaders surrendered Wednesday and told supporters to go home after a deadly army assault on their fortified encampment.

A police spokesman said crack officers had been deployed with authorisation to shoot on sight anybody looting, committing arson or inciting unrest.

Bangkok: Thailand's anti-government "Red Shirts" on Wednesday ended their street protest campaign as leaders surrendered to police after a military offensive against their rally base. At least four Reds leaders turned themselves in, after an overwhelming operation by troops who punched through the barricades of their camp in Bangkok's shopping district which they have occupied for six weeks.

The leaders asked thousands of supporters in the camp to leave, and to proceed to an area where the government has laid on buses so they can depart the capital. "I ask everyone to go home," said senior Reds figure Nattawut Saikuar in a television interview from the National Police Office where he was in custody.

"There will be police guarding the road and providing security for you. I hope that you return home safely," he said. Earlier, Reds leaders had tearfully announced the end of their protest movement in front of a large crowd of emotional supporters, including many women and children.

"I know that you are suffering. Some of us are speechless. But we want to stop any more deaths here," said Jatuporn Prompan. "I know that if the military comes here many of you will sacrifice your lives and we cannot stand to see that."

"We are ending the protests here," said Nattawut from the main protest stage. "I know this is unacceptable to some of you and some of you do not want to hear but we cannot stand against this cruelty." "We will exchange our freedom with your safety. We have tried our best."

BANGKOK : Thailand's fugitive ex-premier Thaksin Shinawatra denied Wednesday he had undermined peace talks between protesters and the government, saying he was not the "mastermind of the terrorists".

He called on the authorities to declare a ceasefire after troops smashed down the barriers of the "Red Shirts" rally site in the heart of the capital and exchanged gunfire with some hardcore protesters.

The clashes came after last-minute talks between the government and the Red Shirts -- formally known as the United Front of Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) -- broke down.

"Today, the government ordered the use of force to disperse the peaceful demonstrators at Ratchaprasong intersection and (is) accusing me as the one who rejected the negotiation," Thaksin said in a statement.

"I have never objected (to) any negotiation efforts. On the other hand, I support and urge all parties to enter negotiations to find peaceful way to solve the political conflict and to bring about national reconciliation.

"Government falsely accused the UDD and protesters of being terrorists and that I am the mastermind of the terrorists. I denied that accusation entirely."

Thaksin was ousted in a bloodless military coup in 2006 and lives in self-imposed exile, mainly in Dubai, to avoid a jail term for corruption. Many Red Shirts seek the return of the former premier.

A wounded Red shirt anti-government protester after Thai troops smashed through their fortified camp in downtown Bangkok
</td> </tr> <tr> <td></td> <td class="update"></td> </tr> <tr> <td></td> <td>
</td> </tr> </tbody></table>

BANGKOK : At least five people, including an Italian journalist, were killed Wednesday during an army crackdown on an anti-government protest site in Bangkok, police and a hospital said. "An Italian man was shot and died before arriving at the hospital," said Police Hospital director Jongjet Aoajenpong. "He's a journalist. He was shot in the stomach," he added.

Four more people died and "many" were wounded, said a police spokesman, Major General Piya Uthayo, after military armoured vehicles smashed through the "Red Shirt" protesters' barricades and armed troops moved in. Thai troops battled with anti-government protesters Wednesday, after smashing into their rally zone using armoured vehicles and tearing down towering barricades of tyres and razor wire.

Gunfire was being exchanged in clashes in the protest encampment, which the "Red Shirts" have occupied for six weeks, defying a military containment operation launched last Thursday that left 39 dead. In the face of the barrage, some 100 other protesters fled towards the movement's main rally stage in the heart of their sprawling encampment, which has shut down Bangkok's main shopping district. Reds leaders tried to quell a rising sense of panic among some 5,000 supporters including many women and children who are still inside the rally base despite the violence and orders to leave. Some were openly crying and others put on face masks in fear of tear gas attacks.

"Please stay calm today, no matter what happens we will stay here together," leader Nattawut Saikuar said from the stage where protesters were gathered for safety, directing them to a nearby Buddhist temple if necessary. "Those who fear for your life go to the temple, but those who volunteer to stay here you are free to do so." The government said the offensive was aimed at establishing a secure perimeter around the protest base, but the military offensive now appeared to be aimed at completely closing down the camp.

"The operations are designed to make sure that the security officers can provide security and safety to the public at large. The operations will continue throughout the day," said government spokesman Panitan Wattanayagorn. "We would like to reassure the citizens and residents of Bangkok that the operations are designed to make sure that we stabilise the area," he said in a televised address. A senator involved in failed last-minute peace talks said he feared the military operation, launched after the Reds defied a Monday deadline to disperse, would cause serious loss of life. "The government has chosen to decisively enforce the law. The signals are that absolutely the army will win, but the losses will be unbearable," said General Lertrat Rattanavanich.

"Certainly based on all the signs that I have seen there will be a crackdown, not containment," added the senator, who was one of a group in the upper house who tried to act as mediators. Hundreds of army and police advanced towards the protest zone in the pre-dawn hours, with trucks dropping off troops wearing balaclavas and carrying weapons and riot shields, while a helicopter circled overhead. Several large fires broke out at barricades and major buildings around the protest zone, sending out massive clouds of black smoke that obscured the Bangkok skyline. Dozens of soldiers crept along Wireless Road, which runs parallel to the protest zone, crouching behind trees and poles and scurrying up foot bridges near the US embassy, which has been closed.

"Danger zone," one soldier said, waving reporters back as muffled cracks rang out from nearby Lumpini park, which the protesters had spilled into during an occupation that has forced hotels and shopping centres to close. Security forces have battled with the Reds since last Thursday as they attempted to seal off the rally base, turning parts of the city into no-go zones as troops used live ammunition against protesters, who fought back mainly with homemade weapons.

The Reds are campaigning for elections to replace the administration of Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva, which they consider illegitimate because it came to power with the backing of the army in a 2008 parliamentary vote. They are mostly supporters of fugitive ex-premier Thaksin Shinawatra who was ousted in a 2006 coup. A controversial court ruling ejected his elected allies from power, paving the way for Abhisit's government to be appointed. Many countries have warned their nations against travelling to Thailand. Australia Wednesday said travellers should not visit Bangkok, citing the deteriorating security situation. – AFP/jy

it look like it is getting worse, the alamo was destroyed, but they spread out and destroy small targets, like guerilla warfare, so this is even worse than when they are all hole up in alamo.
