Aliff (in yellow) was involved in a car crash just hours before he captained Tampines Rovers in Sunday's Singapore Cup final.

S-LEAGUE footballer Aliff Shafaein was arrested on Sunday on suspicion of drink driving and driving while suspended, after he was involved in a car crash hours before he captained Tampines Rovers in the Singapore Cup final. Two women needed hospital treatment after the accident on the morning of Tampines' match against Bangkok Glass, which the former lost 0-1.

Aliff's coach and team manager were left fuming after they learnt of the vice-captain's arrest, which he failed to tell them about before the match on Sunday. The attacking midfielder was acting team captain during the match, but was substituted in the second half because of his poor performance.

Aliff, 28, was believed to have been driving a relative's black Honda Jazz along Lentor Avenue towards Yishun when it collided with another car. The other driver, a 30-year-old woman, and her passenger, a woman in her early 20s, were taken to Khoo Teck Puat Hospital. They were said to have been treated for minor injuries.

Aliff, believed to have been handcuffed when arrested, was unhurt. It is understood that he was able to play in the match because he was released on $10,000 bail. Team manager Syed Faruk said he had been able to contact Aliff only via SMS after learning of the arrest yesterday, and was very disappointed with the player's actions.

SINGAPORE: Footballer Aliff Shafaein was on Tuesday morning sent to jail after pleading guilty to charges of drink driving and driving without a licence.

The former Tampines Rovers captain was driving along Lentor Avenue without due care and collided with another car on the morning of November 14.

Both vehicles were extensively damaged and the driver of the other car suffered bodily abrasions and cuts.

A traffic police officer conducted a breathalyser test on Aliff after noticing that he reeked of alcohol.

Aliff failed the breathalyser test and was placed under arrest for drink driving.

Further investigations also revealed that Aliff drove the car despite not having a driver's license.

He also drove the car without the permission of the owner and did not have valid insurance coverage.

For his offences, he was sentenced to three weeks' jail, fined S$6,100 and disqualified from holding or obtaining driving licences from all classes for 18 months after his release.

Aliff was also fined S$4,400 and disqualified holding or obtaining driving licences from all classes for 12 months, for driving an off-peak car during restricted hours on 13 July 2007 without a supplementary license.

He was also found to be driving without a driving license and insurance coverage on that day.

FORMER vice-captain Aliff Shafaein of the Tampines Rovers football team, was jailed three weeks for driving in 2006 while under disqualification. He was also ordered to pay a fine of $10,500 on 10 other charges by a district court on Tuesday, or serve 48 days in jail.

District Judge Salina Ishak also heard that the 28-year-old footballer had only paid $100 of a $1,400 fine imposed in 2006. As he told the court he was unable to pay up, he would have to serve an additional five days in jail.

His other offences include driving an off-peak car without a supplementary licence and without a valid driving licence and insurance coverage in July 2007. A month later, he was nabbed parking illegally and driving without a licence again.

Last month along Lentor Avenue, on the day of an important cup final match, he was involved in a traffic accident. He had been drink-driving, driving without a licence and insurance coverage, and without the car-owner's consent.

Telling the court that a long jail term would endanger Aliff's career prospects as this would affect his fitness, his lawyer Mohamed Muzammil Mohamed said that Tampines Rovers were willing to give his client an opportunity to redeem himself on a solemn promise not to run foul of the law.
