PERMATANG PAUH, Malaysia, Aug 26, 2008 (AFP) - Malaysian opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim's party said Tuesday its exit polls indicate he has won 61 percent of the votes in a by-election expected to return him to parliament.

"From our exit poll figures and what we are tracking, Anwar is safely leading in the polls and... I think that it is right to say about 61 percent," said Sivarasa Rasiah, vice president of the Keadilan party.

Sivarasa said that the candidate from the ruling Barisan Nasional coalition, Arif Shah Omar Shah, had garnered about 39 percent of the vote.

"We are still not declaring victory as we will wait for the official election results from the Election Commission," he said.

Polling booths opened at 8:00 am (0000 GMT) and are due to close at 5:00pm. Results are expected to be released by 10:00 pm.

sinkapore needs an external force to tame PAP, Anwar may be the man. lets hope he becomes the PM of malaysia.

I'm sure the PAP will try to leverage on Anwar's good showing to squeeze something out of the ruling BN, if they can still rule after his victory that is. It can get a bit complicated.

A better bill will be to have those who slander, discredit and bear false witness to be sodomized.

And those who blow up helpless models to be blown in return.

...

Malaysian will have to brace themselves, their parliament is going to be a bit like that of Taiwan, messy messy.

However it will prevent:

(1) abuse of power
(2) arbitrary passing of bills

And it will encourage:

(3) more accountability in policies.

In time to come, Malaysia will be a far better place, more organized, more accountable, less corrupt (whatever the state they are in now), more resilent.

Politicians in such a situation cannot abuse their power over others arbitarily just because they are linked to the highest power in the land.

Because now, there is someone to check them.
