SINGAPORE: A man held on remand who was granted bail for a day to get married, is now on the run from the authorities after he gave his girlfriend the slip Monday evening.

A warrant of arrest has been issued against 28-year-old Irfan Ahmed Khan Iqbal Ahmed Khan who is accused of two drug-related charges and one count of weapon possession.

Irfan was granted the one-day bail of S$100,000 in the High Court, last Friday.

That is because he claimed that he had to go to the Registry of Muslim Marriages on Tuesday morning with his girlfriend.

But after abandoning her, he also failed to turn up for his trial in a district court Tuesday.

The court heard that Irfan, who was remanded at Changi Prison, left the facility with his elder brother at around 2 pm on Monday.

Irfan met his girlfriend later that afternoon to buy some clothes for the wedding.

The pair later went to a mosque in Yishun at around 7 pm and Irfan entered the building alone while she waited outside.

When he did not come out by 8 pm, the girlfriend phoned Irfan's elder brother who arrived about 15 minutes later.

He searched the mosque but Irfan was nowhere to be found.

The warrant review will be held on September 6.

SINGAPORE: A man who skipped bail and fled to Malaysia has been arrested in a joint operation between the Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB) and its Malaysian counterpart.

Twenty-eight-year-old Irfan Ahmed Khan was arrested on Thursday near Jalan Belimbing 1 along Senai Highway in Johor.

Malaysian authorities on Friday morning handed over the custody of Irfan to CNB.

Irfan will appear on Saturday in court.

Investigations are currently under way to establish how Irfan had left the country and crossed over to Malaysia.

He was released on a one-day conditional bail by the courts on June 6 to register his wedding the following morning.

He did not turn up for his wedding solemnisation.

He had also failed to turn up for his court trial on the morning of June 7.

Irfan is facing a charge of trafficking in 190.98 grammes of methamphetamine.

The charge carries a minimum punishment of 20 years' jail and 15 strokes of the cane.

Irfan is also facing additional drug possession and possession of offensive weapon charges.

A warrant of arrest was issued against him when he absconded from his court bail on June 7.

CNB director Ng Boon Gay said he would like to thank his Malaysian counterpart, for the valuable assistance in helping in the arrest.

He added this operation also demonstrated the commitment of CNB officers to ensure justice is served.

To tackle the increasing transnational nature of drug trade, CNB said it will continue to work with its Malaysian counterpart as well as regional and international drug enforcement agencies to fight the war against drugs.
