SINGAPORE - A 23-year-old woman died from her injuries after the car she was travelling in collided with an SMRT bus at a traffic junction in Bukit Timah early Sunday (April 22).

Two others in the black Mercedes, including the 24-year-old woman driver, were injured. The Straits Times understands that both are still warded in hospital.

The police told ST they were alerted to an accident involving a bus and a car at the junction of Jalan Anak Bukit and Jalan Jurong Kechil at about 1am.

"The car driver, a 24-year-old woman, and her passenger, a 26-year-old man, were conscious when taken to Ng Teng Fong General Hospital," police said.

They added that a 23-year-old woman, who was a passenger in the same vehicle, was unconscious when taken to the National University Hospital, where she subsequently succumbed to her injuries.

ST understands that the male passenger was in the front passenger seat, while the deceased was seated in the rear.

The accident was believed to have happened when the black Mercedes was making a right turn from Jalan Anak Bukit to enter the Pan-Island Expressway.

The SMRT bus, understood to be off-service at the time, was going straight along Jalan Anak Bukit towards Clementi Road, when the vehicles collided at the traffic junction. The bus driver was not injured.

Photos of the scene showed the SMRT bus with its windscreen badly smashed and glass shards strewn across the road.

The black Mercedes could be seen with dents on its left passenger door.

Police investigations are ongoing.

In response to queries, SMRT vice-president for corporate communications Margaret Teo said on Sunday: "We are saddened that the accident has occurred, and will be reaching out to the deceased’s family to provide assistance during this difficult time."

She added that the company will be extending their fullest cooperation to the police in their investigations.

Meanwhile, the bus driver has been reassigned to non-driving duties, while assisting with investigations, Ms Teo said.

This is the second fatal accident reported in recent days.

On Thursday evening, National University of Singapore undergraduate Kathy Ong, 19, died after the Silvercab taxi she was in collided with a car.

Ms Ong was a rear-seat passenger in the taxi with three other friends, who were all injured in the accident at the junction of Clementi Road and Commonwealth Avenue West.

They should eradicate Sinkie drivers, once found guilty of a traffic offence, they will be banned from driving for life, that's the way to control car population and keeping the roads safe.
KNN at least 50% of current drivers need to be eradicated and qualified drivers and car owners should not be paying coe KNN

only 2 weeks jail?!

https://sg.yahoo.com/news/woman-cau...2-weeks-barred-driving-4-years-025248819.html

After attending a birthday party, Honami Lam Qixin offered her close friend, Jasmine Lim Jia Yan, a ride home.

However Lim, 23, died after an SMRT bus ploughed into the left side of the car Lam was driving.

Lam, 25, had failed to keep a proper lookout for oncoming vehicles while making a discretionary right turn, and was sentenced to two weeks’ jail on Friday (29 March). She pleaded guilty to one count of negligent act not amounting to culpable homicide causing the death of Lim, an assistant brand manager, on 22 April last year.

Lam, a project manager, was also disqualified from driving all vehicles for four years.

The prosecution had earlier sought a four-week jail sentence along with a five-year driving ban, while Lam’s lawyer, David Nayar, asked for a one-week jail term and a two-year driving ban.
Failed to stop car at junction before turning right

Lam and her boyfriend, Jake Lau Zhi Wei, 27, had attended Lim’s boyfriend’s birthday party at Pine Grove on the evening of 21 April last year.

The party ended after midnight and Lam offered Lim a ride in her car. Lau sat on the left passenger seat of the car while Lim sat on the left side of the rear seat.

At around 12.56am, the car arrived at the junction of Jalan Anak Bukit and Jurong Kechil Road on the second lane of the three-lane road.

Lam intended to turn right towards the Pan-Island Expressway (PIE) towards Changi and did so when the traffic light turned green for vehicles travelling straight. The right-turn arrow had not appeared then, and Lam did not stop the car in the turning pocket while turning into the PIE.

At the same time, the SMRT bus was moving in the oncoming lane on Jalan Anak Bukit towards Clementi Road, at about 59 kmh, and the traffic light was green on the bus’ path. When bus driver Thanjavour Rajarm Prabhuram noticed Lam’s car turning into his path, he tried to brake but could not do so in time.

The bus collided into the left side of the car, causing the smaller vehicle to spin before coming to a halt. Lam exited the car to check what had happened before calling the police.
Died from head injuries
Lim was conveyed to the National University Hospital but died from head injuries at 7.06am.
Lam and Lau were brought to Ng Teng Fong General Hospital (NTFGH) for treatment. Lam sustained bruises on her right hip and left knee, while Lau suffered bruises to his chest and pain in his right knee.
An in-car camera of a car not involved in the collision captured the incident.
An inspection of the car post-accident found that it had its windscreen and left windows cracked while its left rear tyre was deflated, among other damages. The bus also sustained a cracked windscreen and crumpled front bumper.
In sentencing Lam, District Judge Kessler Soh noted that she was a close friend of Lim and had a clean driving record.
For causing death through a negligent act, Lam could have been jailed up to two years and fined, or both.

Black Mercedeks, people's father got connection. Kangaroo court must wayang a bit. 2 weeks is excessive, maybe the friend should go haunt her.

Yes, that is a very busy road junction... probably even more so after the flyover 'upgrades' and road widenings.

I bet it wasn't that busy back in the day when the Yeo Hiap Seng factory was there, and even on weekends with busloads of horse racing punters.
