Customers of Fake Apple Store Demand Refunds9:00 AM - July 26, 2011 - By Jane McEntegart -

Electronics stores in Kunming are being investigated and customers are demanding receipts following the revelation that fake Apple stores are operating in the area.

Last week blogger BirdAbroad made a huge splash with pictures of a fake Apple store in Kunming, China. However, it seems there were some unhappy customers following the revelation that the shop was a not a legitimate Apple store. Reuters reports that customers were Friday 'berating staff and demanding refunds' following the news coverage.

"When I heard the news I rushed here immediately to get the receipt, I am so upset," one customer told Reuters. "With a store this big, it looks so believable who would have thought it was fake?"

The customer in question was sold a 13-inch MacBook Pro and iPhone 3G by the staff at the store. However, she was never given a receipt, but told to come back and collect it later. An employee spoke to Reuters, complaining about the unfair portrayal of the store in the media.

"The media is painting us to be a fake store but we don't sell fakes, all our products are real, you can check it yourself," he said.

The Associated Press reports that Chinese authorities are investigating electronics stores in the area and have found a total of five fake Apple stores. Two of these locations have been ordered to suspend business pending an investigation. The other three remain open as no fake Apple products were found.

The owner of the store that appeared in photos on the BirdAbroad blog told the Wall Street Journal (via Washington Post) that while his storefront was unauthorized, the products were genuine Apple products. He is said to have declined to reveal his supplier but apparently hopes to become an Apple reseller soon.

"I am sure we will become their authorized reseller in the near future," the man, named only as Li, told The Wall Street Journal, "After all, we invested a lot in this store."

The investigations carried out at the stores will focus on business licenses, permits of brand use and purchasing channels for each location.

This is a real apple store, not the authorised one that sinkies have.

The Apple Store is a pretty laid back place, with friendly staff who will help you pick out a computer -- or, if you'd prefer, leave you alone to write an entire book on the store's computers. But just how far can you push it before the staff get fed up?

New York-based comedian Mark Malkoff decided to test the limits of the Apple Store's friendliness.

Ic there's one pretty nice looking apple store in cineleisure though.

Although the Apple Authorised dealers in Spore are not owned & run by Apple, they are all following the look & feel of the Apple stores in the USA.

It's something like a franchise e.g. MacD, KFC, etc.

China's Fake Apple Stores Become Smart

China may have rather lax enforcement of copyright and trademarks, but Apple's managed to get the authorities of the Chinese city of Kunming to go after the fake Apple Stores that have made tech headlines lately.

Authorities have ordered the fake Apple Stores to abandon the use of Apple's trademarks, now calling themselves the Smart Store. Perhaps the name of the store comes from its "genius" staff… or maybe they should call them Brainiacs, or something.

MIC Gadget has more pictures from these newly rebranded stores. The layout concept and internal look still borrow liberally from Apple, but at least now it's not paraded as a corporate store. All the goods sold are believed to be legitimate products.

I know their knowledge of Apple products are limited but what do you expect from part-timers:smile:

If you look at the various Apple authorised resellers in Spore you will notice these stores share a common look & feel. The sales people wear similar black t-shirts. You can bet that these stores are following Apple's guide lines. Go look at the Apple stores in Malaysia, same, same right?

The market in Spore & Malaysia is too small for Apple to be interested in opening their own stores. So expect the Apple "partners" to mimic the the original Apple Stores, at least in form. Other than "franchise" can you provide a more applicable description

CNN reports on details of Apple's anti-counterfeiting efforts centered in China, noting that the company has had difficulty winning the cooperation of Chinese authorities to investigate and shut down those responsible for the fake Apple products. The details were revealed in documents from U.S. diplomatic cables published by WikiLeaks last week.

The technology giant eventually organized a team in March 2008 to curtail the explosion of knockoff iPods and iPhones, according to an electronic memo from the Beijing embassy dated September 2008.

Yet, three years after Apple moved to crack down on widespread counterfeiting and put pressure on China, progress has been slow. Gadget piracy isn't a high priority for the Chinese government, the U.S. reports and experts say.
The reports note that Apple's efforts have been led by vice president for global security John Theriault, a former FBI special agent and Pfizer vice president who was hired by Apple after he led a campaign against production of counterfeit prescription drugs. Theriault was joined at Apple by his Pfizer associate Don Shruhan, who now serves as a director with Apple's security team in Hong Kong.

Despite putting the anti-counterfeiting task force together, Apple has had only limited success as Chinese authorities have been reluctant to respond to Apple's requests for assistance. Apple has tried to convince authorities to take a more active role by citing the potential dangers of exploding batteries in counterfeit products and the loss of tax revenue associated with the knockoff products, but Chinese authorities have cited their own reasons for not pursuing the claims.

The arguments weren't very effective. China's government declined to investigate a facility in March 2009 that was manufacturing imitation Apple laptops because it threatened local jobs, says a cable dated April 2009. A different arm of China's government scrapped plans for a raid on an electronics mall in the Guangdong province because it could have driven away shoppers, the cable says.
Last month, several counterfeit Apple retail stores in China gained significant publicity after being highlighted by a popular blog. Two of those stores were closed over permit issues, but dozens more stores have since been discovered. Apple has also sought to crack down on knockoff products in the United States, having recently filed suit against a pair of businesses in New York City selling such goods.

China university students accused of ripping off Victoria's Secret fashion show

Students from Chengdu University's School of Radio, Film & Television raised eyebrows when they recently staged a risqué fashion show featuring women's lingerie.

But it was not just the skimpy clothing that set netizens abuzz.

Students strutted down the runway in outfits that were almost identical to American lingerie retailer, Victoria's Secret's televised runway collection.

The concept of the show and even poses struck by the models were also similar, inviting complaints that the student-run show was a "rip-off" of the popular annual event.

The latest incident comes in the wake of China making headlines with its fake Apple and Ikea stores.

News site Chinasmack's online community was ablaze with scathing comments that criticised the university for allowing the "plagiarised" show to go on.

Perhaps the students were simply living up to the words of Steve Jobs when he famously quoted Pablo Picasso, “Good artists copy, great artists steal”.

Besides the issue of originality, there were also some who believed that it was unbecoming for students to stage a lingerie show in an academic setting.

Feng Zhen, a senior student at Binzhou Medical University in Shandong Province, told China's Global Times that "It is shameful for university students to wear so little clothing. There are many other types of clothes that better reflect what students are wearing."

But Tina Wang, a senior student at Communication University of China who was interviewed in the same report, voiced support for the show as it allows students to express their creativity.

A full-scale replica of the Sphinx, which is part of an unfinished theme park that will also accommodate the production of movies, television shows and animation, is silhouetted on the outskirts of Shijiazhuang.
