Sporean's are having problems getting a decent paying job.

So I was surprise when I came across this story in the Straits Times about the comment made by Governor Jennifer Granholm

http://www.straitstimes.com/world/u...ok-to-singapore-says-former-michigan-governor

To bring back jobs, Trump should look to Singapore, says former Michigan governor

Look to Singapore - said former Michigan governor Jennifer Granholm in response to a question about how President-elect Donald Trump's administration can bring back manufacturing jobs to the United States.

She was responding to a question put to her by a Yale student at a recent live townhall show by CNN. Clips of the show have recently been making the rounds online in Singapore.

Mr Kyle Tierney, who supports Mr Trump, asked the former Clinton surrogate: "Trump has promised to bring back manufacturing jobs. How do you see the Trump administration distancing itself from continuing crony capitalism and making sure that the government isn't picking winners and losers in a tweet or press conference?"

In her reply, Ms Granholm said it "is not just about taxes" and asked the audience to consider which country "does it best".

She shared that she posed the same question to a business roundtable of chief executives, asking which country makes it "irresistible for you to decide to go there and what are they doing".

The answer, she said, was Singapore.

"And I said well what is it about Singapore? What are they doing that we're not doing? And they said - it's not just about taxes," Ms Granholm said. "It's the fact that they are assembling land for us to locate our factories there - it's that they're training people for specifically the jobs that are coming out of that factory. It's because they're providing us access to capital, they have the whole wrap-around strategy for how they become irresistible."

She said that the US has to be "irresistible to advanced manufacturers (around) the globe or we are going to lose out", adding that she would like to see "a comprehensive plan from the Trump administration".

Mr Trump will be inaugurated as the 45th US President on Friday (Jan 20).

america is run by too many layers of government. if you're a ceo and plan to build a plant in a green field of a selected location, you need to first negotiate with the local or municipal gov, usually a mayor of a city with jurisdiction over the city suburbs (where there is space to build and easier to get permits and zoning favors); then you need to negotiate with the county gov for tax reduction, infrastructure support such as roads, power, and exemption from wildlife and wetland preserves (tough); next you need to talk to the state for state tax reduction/exemption, state agencies' permission, state infrastructure support such as state highway access to site, power grid enhancement, governor's buy-in; and lastly you need to get approval from federal gov agencies such as epa, dept of commerce, congressional members, senators, and potus (if the investment is "yuge"). depending on your political leaning, you either get fast track blessing or stone wall delays. none of them will help fund your investment in the form of tax incentives or land grant or discounts in land lease and utilities (some cities manage utilities), unless you provide jobs that favor the local voting blocs. if they decide to reduce tax, offer discounts in land lease and utilities, improve infrastructure and impact various gov budgets so much so that taxpayers are required with a tax increase to bail out or replenish gov coffers, every level of gov will float measures and propositions in the next election opportunity to vote on them.

apart from 4 level of govs that you deal with, you need around 2 years to have your planning and survey team do soil study, conduct digs and ensure there is no sign of native american bones or burial grounds. if your team hit bones or a buried settlement you can kiss that site goodbye forever unless you're building a casino with the local amerindians. if everything is smooth and a green light, you still need to negotiate with surrounding land or property owners to nail the deal as very often neighboring owners can be troublemakers before and after the project. and finally for the next 6.9 years you need your project team to attend town council meetings, city dialogues, county meetings, state pow wows, and endless federal lobbying to inform, update and get support.

case in point is the new apple campus in san jose. 6.9 years ago, they were planning to expand to sj with a leased campus near 101 and brokaw. it was green field but a casino occupied the edge of the vast tract. in order to build the campus, casino must be moved to another location nearby. negotiation between city and casino took years, and finally the city was able to convince an old hyatt hotel across the freeway to relocate. took years for hotel to relocate and finally the casino broke ground over a year ago. and construction on campus site by developer started last year. meanwhile with delays and all the waiting, apple decided to buy vast tracts of parcels in sj at another location and bailed out of the planned site at brokaw and 101. it will be another 6.9 years before re-zoning, permits, soil study, archaeological digs and approval from all 4 levels of gov agencies have all the stars lined up for a facility employing at least 6.9k workers to be built. haven't even brought up environmental groups, homeless advocates, anti-tech activists, anti-gentrification fanatics, etc. anyone of these groups can derail your plans by engaging lawyers to keep suing you.

there you go. sg is easy and friendly to deal with as you have the pap in charge. all ceo's in the world love to to deal with sg. sinkies have only the pap to thank for.

Democracy is such bother. Consult here and there, study this and that, best leave it all to decisive natural aristocrats who most certainly will have your interests in mind.

Yes why should people be concerned with the flash floods, the unreliable mrt system, elevators breaking down, parts of buildings falling off, falling windows,... etc The important thing is that we must make sure that the natural aristocrats are taken care & paid $$$$.
