Islam prescribes a rigourous fast (called siyam in Arabic) for all healthy adult Muslims. This fast requires total abstention from food and drink from dawn to sunset during every day of the month of Ramadan, the ninth month in the Islamic calendar. Islam assigned two purposes to fasting: self-discipline and commiseration with the hungry of the earth. Islam thus regards each day in Ramadan as a fresh exercise in devotion and one of the aspects of Islam’s humanism is through charity and giving back to society. Member of Parliament for Aljunied GRC, Muhamad Faisal bin Abdul Manap and Member of Parliament for Hougang, Png Eng Huat took this opportunity and partook in the tradition of distributing porridge and preserved dates to the residents in Kaki Bukit ward, Aljunied GRC on 22 July 2012. Banners were put up a few weeks before the event and residents started queuing for the porridge and preserved dates as early as 3.15p.m. The event started promptly at 4p.m and within an hour, all 300 units of porridges and preserved dates were all distributed out. It was certainly a Sunday afternoon well-spent.
