SINGAPORE: A serial housebreaker in Clementi has been arrested as a result of a resident's vigilance who prevented a neighbour's home from being broken into.

On Sunday afternoon, Madam Lim saw a man trying to pry open the sliding window pane of her neighbour's unit.

She shouted at the housebreaker, causing him to flee.

Her neighbour was then alerted and the incident was reported to the police.

Officers managed to arrest the suspect later in the evening.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the 47-year-old man had successfully broken into another unit earlier the same day.

Police said stolen items worth about S$6,000 were recovered and seized from him together with a sling bag containing four screwdrivers believed to have been used.

The suspect is believed to be involved in at least six other break-ins at Clementi.

He will be charged in court on Tuesday, with housebreaking.

If found guilty, he faces up to 10 years in prison, and a fine.

Man charged with housebreaking

By Elena Chong

A 46-YEAR-OLD man was charged with housebreaking and theft of $3,849 in cash and property from a flat in Clementi on Sunday.

Sim Tiam Tay allegedly forced open the sliding window and grille of the premises at Block 364 Clementi Avenue 2 and stole an assortment of items and currencies from Mr Kwaku Eason.

He was remanded at Clementi for a week for investigation. A police statement said a public-spirited resident was at home when she heard some noise coming from outside her neighbour's unit.

On noticing a man trying to pry open the sliding window pane of her neighbour's unit, she opened the door and shouted at him, causing him to flee. She immediately alerted her neighbour who called 999.

Clementi housebreaker jailed for 9 years

By Elena Chong

A MAN who broke into flats mostly in Clementi area between August and December last year was jailed for nine years and ordered to be given 12 strokes of the cane on Wednesday.

This is the second time that Sim Tiam Tay, 47, had committed housebreaking and theft by day. In 2004, he was jailed six years for a series of housebreaking and theft by day.

In the latest case, he pleaded guilty to four charges of breaking into three flats at Clementi Avenue 2 and another at Bukit Merah View by forcing open the sliding windows and grilles or removing the window panes.

Four other charges were taken into consideration. When police arrested him in Clementi Avenue 2 on Dec 12, he was carrying a bag containing four screwdrivers, an accessories box, a black cap, two white cotton gloves and a pair of sunglasses.

Assistant Superintendent Raj Kishore Rai sought a stiff sentence in view of Tay's similar previous convictions. The amount involved was about $44,000.
