Boss, you are truly blinded by money, only money makes you see the cesspit but not the compassion of this Dr Tan.
People like this Dr Tan make this world a better place for the have-nots, the poor, the destitue and the deprived but those living in the ivory tower do not understand such compassion.
Let me rephrase my previous statement. His eldest son belonged to one of the rare albino bastard species on earth.
The wealthy have set up billions of dollars' worth of foundations and philanthropic trusts throughout the developed world in the past century and a half, including Singapore and the US.
Has it done anything to alleviate abject poverty? No. Has it reduced income inequity? No. Has it reduced the crutch mentality among the poor and disenfranchised? No.
Singapore and the US rank as the #1 and #2 in the developed world in terms of Gini coefficient, despite a strong culture of philanthropy. The other Anglo-Saxon countries aren't much better. On the other hand, the Scandinavian countries with their strong culture of state support and socialist policies have the lowest Gini indices in the First World.
Go figure.
A low Gini index is bad as it means that the talented are not being sufficiently rewarded and the losers are being overpaid.
On the same note Uncle Sam..A low Gini index can also mean
....the rich and talented are hoarding their loot
-- tilt the policies to protect their loot ( removal of Estate duty Tax, thus enjoying a $300 million tax exemption)
-- taxing elderly for a miserable $3 processing fee for medisave transfer.
-- double the betting cost for the everyday folks who is buying some hope on Toto jackpot.
-- doubling or tripling the toll charges so that the ordinary folks who just want to enjoy some small arbitrage gains
across the borders will be checked.
For those you classify as losers or should rightfully be called ordinary folks
--- increase excise and liquor duties and dampen their joy to collect the extra $20 million yearly.
The Tax burden shifts to these poorer and ordinary man in the streets.
Better still, try importing 6 more billionaires and some 600 more millionaires so that our Gini Index can be stretch further to record level.
