A Mis-sold Government!

The following is another comment from the same anonymous reader. My response is this: Ever since I get involved in helping Mr. Tan Kin Lian in delivering his translated speech, some people approached me in private, even come to my shop and said, as a middle-upper class Singaporeans, they have finally awaken to the fact that this PAP government isn't as good as they claim to be. They could make grave mistakes. In this saga, apparently anyone with a critical mind, would come to the conclusion that MAS has mishandled the whole saga and that, MAS itself was the main culprit in allowing such complex financial product to be sold to people who are only interested in putting their money in safe bank fixed deposits.

And I am glad to hear from these people that they finally realized the importance of having alternative voice, checks and balances within the political platform, namely the parliament. I hope this will materialize in the next GE.

The following is the comment from anonymous:

I'm the same anonymous who wrote the above. I want to say somemore.

We as Singaporeans serve NS and do our reservist duties. But everyday many of us ask what we will be fighting for. Not towering million $ condominiums downtown or not the wealth of the companies that set up here and can close shop and leave when the bad time comes. We defend our pledge which holds the values that binds our society - democracy, justice, equality.

We have understood that we voted for a govt who will serve the people. But in times of crisis like this, we see the govt is not even sure which side to stand. It is like an NS man who is not sure whether to fight or not. There is no question in my mind that the leadership has to be on the side of the people from day 1. What we saw was dithering, denial and trying to spread the blame. It was shameful. Totally shameful. The MAS and govt seems to be hiding from the people on the 1st week of the saga. It was when Tan Kin Lian screamed "MAS Do the right thing" on his blog that people in the ivory tower realise they need to act.

10,000 ordinary Singaporeans losing their lifesavings wrought no sense of urgency from this govt. Their natural instinct was to adopt a minimalist approach if there was "little noise" from the ground.

I did not invest a single cent in structured product but I invested my entire life in this society called Singapore and accepted this form of elitist govt sold to me by the PAP. I've been mis-sold a govt. They are not worth the millions they are paid. There is no guarantee they are on the side of the people in times of crisis. There is no protection of the values in our pledge - Justice and equality. It seems their only interest in running this country to make money from ordinary people to grow the GLCs for the benefit of a handful of elites.

It is very clear to me that I've been mis-sold a whole govt called the PAP. It is a structured product - they have a power structure that downgrade the interests of the ordinary people. They structured our society so that there is a huge income gap between themselves and the ordinary folks. This structured product matures/expires in 3 years time, I'm not sure if I can get my 'principle' back. I'll make very sure the next time I stand in front of that ballot box I'll make the right decision. No amount of advertising and marketing will help them to mis-sell this structured product called PAP to me ever again.

It's never too late to realise it. After all, the next GE is slightly less than 3 years away.

Ehh, sure or not?

Maybe they'll forget their anger when the PAP starts giving out those pre-election bribes. In the past a few hundred $$$ has bought many votes.

We have understood that we voted for a govt who will serve the people. But in times of crisis like this, we see the govt is not even sure which side to stand.

this guy still doesnt get it. The gahmen is not unsure of which side to stand, actually they are unsure whether they can totally act blur and push away the responsibility or not, just like what they have been doing all along.

But this time things are very different. This issue also happen in Hong Kong, with the same bank that is involve so happen to be link to the our country. The efficiency of HK govt and HKMA which go all out to help the people have shown a great contrast, compare to our gahmen.

Also Mr Tan K.L has gather all the victims to protest, which is also something rare and not expected by our gahmen.

Base on the "fast response, sincerity and attitude" so far, I wont be surprise that if the same thing happen but only in our land when there is nothing to compare with, these victims will be ignored totally. Even with the help of Mr. Tan K.L, chances is still close to 0%.

It seems that Sporns only know how to wake up their idea when they or their relatives kena. Old Fart has been systematically replacing Sporns with FTrash since 2 elections ago, but 66% still rooted for him, probably cos they hadn't kena then.

A Fable

A mouse looked through the crack in the wall to see the farmer and his wife open a package. What food might this contain? The mouse wondered - he was devastated to discover it was a mousetrap. Retreating to the farmyard, the mouse proclaimed the warning: There is a mousetrap in the house! There is a mousetrap in the house! The chicken clucked and scratched, raised her head and said, "Mr.Mouse, I can tell this is a grave concern to you, but it is of no consequence to me." " I cannot be bothered by it."

The mouse turned to the pig and told him, "There is a mousetrap in the house! There is a mousetrap in the house!" The pig sympathized, but said, I am so very sorry, Mr. Mouse, but there is nothing I can do about it but pray. "Be assured you are in my prayers." The mouse turned to the cow and said "There is a mousetrap in the house! There is a mousetrap in the house!" The cow said, "Wow, Mr. Mouse. I'm sorry for you, but it's no skin off my nose." So, the mouse returned to the house, head down and dejected, to face the farmer's mousetrap alone. That very night a sound was heard throughout the house -- like the sound of a mousetrap catching its prey.

The farmer's wife rushed to see what was caught. In the darkness, she did not see it was a venomous snake whose tail the trap had caught. The snake bit the farmer's wife. The farmer rushed her to the hospital , and she returned home with a fever. Everyone knows you treat a fever with fresh chicken soup, so the farmer took his hatchet to the farmyard for the soup's main ingredient. But his wife's sickness continued, so friends and neighbors came to sit with her around the clock.

To feed them, the farmer butchered the pig. The farmer's wife did not get well; she died. So many people came for her funeral, the farmer had the cow slaughtered to provide enough meat for all of them. The mouse looked upon it all from his crack in the wall with great sadness. So, the next time you hear someone is facing a problem and think it doesn't concern you, remember -- when one of us is threatened, we are all at risk. We are all involved in this journey called life. We must keep an eye out for one another and make an extra effort to encourage one another.

I disagree strongly.

There are great many areas that show up the incompetence and weaknesses of the PAP. Those areas involve grave matters on national scale and yet people are blind to them. A few examples are foreign talent, withholding of CPF and human rights policies.

The failed structured products are private commercial matters involving a few thousand investors. If there were mis-selling, it involved a few commercial profit-motivated enterprises.

The protestors at Hong Lim are there for a specific personal reason - to try to get back their money from botched investments. Otherwise, you will never find them anywhere near Hong Lim or donating a single cent to the opposition. They are politically apathetic and the least concern about the country or their fellow citizens.

A few opportunistic individuals are "striking while the iron is hot". It is a symbiotic arrangement. That's all.

but as soon as the next GE approach, the MIW issue some cheap candy to pacify the people, and the majority of them suddenly fall flat on their faces & pray to the MIW again.

It's been happening every 5 years for the last 4 decades. There is absolutely no reason why it won't continue for the next half a century.

sporns r forced to become selfish & 4get integrity bcos gahment has made life difficult for us all. employers have also started to become slave drivers; either giving adequate salary bt expecting super long hours, or giving humane working hours with pathetic salary.

more & more ppl r starting to moonlight, take up 2nd job in their free time to top up the outstanding for financial liabilities. some barely making ends meet, but we can be very certain, many have enough to spend but nothing much left to save.

such is the case for most sporns, when they can't cover their own back, then, no need to even expect to look-out for another's back.

Why are Sinkies so quick to complain and criticise and so dumb when it comes to understanding realities?

The PAP gahmen is as good as we will ever get. It's not perfect and it's not screw proof but many many other countries in the world can only dream of having the kind of governance Sinkies have been blessed with.

It's easy to comment with the wisdom of hindsight...but did anyone foresee the Lehman crash and all the collapse that rapidly followed? Did any of our political opposition /alternatives make better predictions?

We can argue the same shit over and over again but deep down, all Sinkies know that there really is no alternative to the PAP.

So posture and talk for all you like...come next GE the gahmen will be returned..yet again.

When will you stupid fucks ever learn ?

Ya , no one forsee the closure of LEHMAN brothers. No one foresee the housing bubble in US will become a world wide financial crisis !

But that a poor excuse, didnt DBS bank plan for contingency plan ? Like Lehman brothers is to collaspe ? Well they are the commercial organisation ! Ya, may be their plan is to let customer sign the disclaimer.

No one can forsee anything ! So don tell people that their minister is of ELITE status, with helicopter vision ! They oversold but under perform ! Too much rational make a poor leader sometimes.

The "mis-sold" structured products is one of the weakest and lousiest examples to show up a "mis-sold" government. In fact, through a series of possible measures later on, it may even show up the government as caring.

On the other hand, the withholding of CPF is one of the best examples to show up a "mis-sold" government. Because one minute they claimed our CPF scheme is the envy of the world, the next minute they claimed it to be fundamentally flawed. And also, it is unlikely they are able to revert to returning our money fully and unencumbered at 55. Afterall, aren't they stucked in either good investments generating low returns or bad investments promising high returns?

The strange thing is there are no lack of opposition clamouring to legitimise and outdo the "mis-sold" CPF scheme with their inputs.
