I remember in a trip to Europe that the origin of the necktie began in medieval Croatia where Croatian mercenaries wore the necktie in their getup and it started a fashion trend. So it became from some army no 4!!

while the modern necktie is associated with the cravat (french adaptation of croat), the neck scarf which is an indirect predecessor to the cravat was used as a "sweat towel" around the neck and sometimes as head covering from the sun by ancient roman soldiers. in latin, it's called the sudarium. you can see war scarves on roman statues and wall sculptures in rome and some ruins in aosta. ancient chinese solders used silk scarves for multiple purposes: rank identification, sweat absorption, sandstorm, dust pollution, sneezing, spitting, arse wiping, etc. :p
