6 people arrested for illegal gambling activities

SINGAPORE - Police have arrested 6 people for managing and gaming in an illegal gambling den at a shop house Tuesday.
In a five-hour operation which started on January 15, 2013 at about 8.00pm, officers from Bedok Police Division raided a shop house located along Geylang Road. Five men and one woman aged between 27 and 65 were arrested.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the man, aged 65 years, had rented the shop house for the purpose of gambling, while the remaining suspects are believed to be patrons.
23 modified computers and cash amounting to about $585 were also seized as case exhibits.
Any person convicted of an offence of managing a place to be used as a Common Gaming House shall be guilty on conviction to a fine of not less than $5,000 and not more than $50,000 and shall be punished with imprisonment for a term not exceeding 3 years.
As for the patrons, any person convicted of an offence of gaming in a Common Gaming House shall be liable on conviction to a fine not exceeding $5,000 or to imprisonment for a term not exceeding 6 months or to both.
Commander of Bedok Police Division, Deputy Assistant Commissioner of Police How Kwang Hwee commended the officers for their good cooperation and coordinating leading to the success of the operation. He added that the authorities will continue to conduct strict enforcement operation to eradicate the criminal and undesired activities in Geylang.
