A POLICE sergeant, who found a stack of cash during an unauthorised raid, passed $50 each to four colleagues to entice them not to report him to their superiors. Elvilin Tay Sheo Tang, 36, was jailed six months yesterday (aug20) on four counts of corruption and one count of attempted corruption.

During the trial that lasted about 10 days early this year (10), a district court heard that a fifth officer had refused the money. Tay is appealing against the conviction and sentence and is out on $10,000 bail. Witnesses testified that the team of officers had conducted a raid at a forested area off Seletar Range on Jan 24, 2008.

Tay's lawyer Victor Yip tried to convince District Judge Jasbendar Kaur that the money handed to the officers was their share of the loot. His client was not bribing them to remain silent and could not be convicted of corruption, he had argued. He could have been fined up to $100,000 and/or jailed up to seven years on each charge.
