6 dead, dozens hurt after bus in eastern China plunges into ditch in botched hijack attempt

One man’s attempt to hijack a bus in eastern China has led to the tragic deaths of six people, leaving dozens more injured after the vehicle lost control and plunged into a ditch.
The incident occurred in Anhui province’s Xiao county on Friday, Thepaper.cn reported.

The bus, carrying 37 people, was travelling from Qingdao in eastern Shandong province to Henan province’s city of Xiangcheng.
Six people on the bus died and 31 others were injured, among whom five were severely wounded, the report quoted local police as saying.
The unidentified man, in his 50s, had suddenly snatched the steering wheel from the bus driver, according to the report.
As the driver lost control of his vehicle, the bus crashed into a barrier by the side of the expressway and plunged into a deep ditch by the side of the road, the report said.

Before the man had attempted the hijack, he had reportedly been pacing up and down the aisle of the bus, harrassing a woman and quarrelling with her family.
He had returned to his seat only after other passengers mediated between them, according to the report.
Police have opened a criminal investigation into the accident, the report said.
