54 more Myanmar nationals detained

KUALA LUMPUR: Following the recent clashes between two factions of Myanmar nationals in the Klang Valley, police have detained another 54 Myanmar nationals without pro-per documents.

They were picked up around the capital during a police operation at 3am yesterday, aimed at averting more clashes between the feuding factions.

City public order and internal security chief Senior Asst Comm Wan Abdul Bari Wan Abdul Khalid said the foreigners were picked up in Cheras, Brickfields and Sentul.

“For Sentul, we have only concentrated on the Pasar Borong Baru area. We expect these operations to be ongoing,” he added.

He added that the Myanmar nationals had been handed over to the Immigration Department for further action.

It was reported on Friday that more than 1,000 Myanmar nationals were picked up by a Kuala Lumpur police task force.

It was determined that 196 of them did not have proper documents while 57 held fake United Nations High Com*missioner for Refugees Malaysia cards.

Seven clashes were reported involving Myanmar nationals in Kuala Lumpur and parts of Selangor between May 30 and June 4.
