SINGAPORE: 45 immigration offenders were arrested by the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority near Whampoa flyover on May 21.
The Indian and Bangladeshi nationals were seeking refuge under the structure.
The ICA operation marks the largest arrest by immigration officers so far this year.
On June 2, another 13 Indian nationals were arrested near Aljunied flyover, bringing to 58 the total number of immigration offenders arrested in a span of two weeks.
ICA said the offenders had to resort to such living as they found it difficult to find proper housing due to their illegal status.
All 58 were men aged between 21 and 56 years old, working as general workers, construction workers, odd job labourers and cleaners.
They were earning an irregular income of about S$7 to S$40 daily.
Under the Immigration Act, they can be jailed up to six months and given a minimum of three strokes of the cane. They will be fined up to S$6,000 if caning cannot be administered.
