The total number of loanshark-related arrests for the first six months of 2010 is 789, as compared to 419 from January to June last year.

This is an increase of 88 per cent.

Police also smashed eight loanshark syndicates in the first half of this year, up from five during the same period of 2009.

FOUR men suspected of being involved in loansharking activities were arrested during a 10-hour operation on Monday.

Officers from the Ang Mo Kio Police Division conducted the anti-loansharking operations in Sengkang and Yishun housing estates, a police statement said.

Investigations revealed that the four men, aged between 31 and 55, had assisted loansharks by collecting loan repayments and carrying out out bank transfers.

Automated teller machine cards and mobile phones were also seized.

One of the suspects, a 31-year-old man, will be charged in court on Wednesday.

Investigations against the remaining three suspects continue.
