SINGAPORE: Police have issued advisories to 37 persons for drinking in public within the proclaimed area at Little India during prohibited times of the alcohol ban.

All of them have complied with the police’s advice to stop drinking, and the alcohol in their possession has been seized.

Separately, the proprietor of a liquor shop along Chander Road will be charged on Wednesday for selling liquor without a valid licence.

The shop falls within a designated zone with stricter alcohol regulations that followed the December 8 riot at Little India.

Investigations revealed it had sold a can of beer during prohibited times.

The proprietor of the liquor shop, a 59 year-old man, could be fined up to S$5,000, if found guilty.

Police said they will continue their heightened patrols at Little India to enforce the ban on alcohol consumption and the licensing restrictions on the sale of alcohol.

They also reminded the public to comply fully with the restrictions imposed on the consumption and sale of alcohol at Little India, warning that those who fail to do so will be dealt with "to the full extent of the law". - CNA/nd
