SINGAPORE: Three Malay men, aged 20 to 22 years, were arrested at Boon Lay Estate and Joo Koon Circle on Monday for suspected involvement in loansharking activities.

Police said this followed a tip-off by a member of the public.

Last Friday, the police were alerted to a case of loanshark harassment where paint was splashed and graffiti was scrawled on the walls of a block of flats in Yishun.

A member of the public saw the suspects leaving in a car and noted down the vehicle registration number, which was provided to the police for follow-up investigations.

Through extensive enquiries, the police managed to establish the identities of the three suspects and on Monday, officers from Ang Mo Kio and Jurong Police Division mounted a joint operation.

The three suspects were arrested at various locations in the Boon Lay Estate and Joo Koon Circle.

First time offenders found guilty of loanshark harassment face fines of between S$4,000 and S$40,000, or up to three years in prison or both.

The sentence may also include caning if, in the course of committing the offence, damage was caused to any property or person. - CNA/vm
