Bedok south market opposite temasek also same. Collect 15k each stall up front for them to build the temporary stall, then still charge monthly rental (?) I heard many stalls refuse to participate so the residents there are going to suffer this year. These RCs are really a bunch of bullies.

I understand that those who want to use their CPF savings to pay for the upgrading can do so - they do not have to pay cash upfront if they do not want to, or are unable to do so.

To put in proper perspective, the Town Council/HDB is considerate and understand that most of the stallholders want to continue their businesses - who doesn't want to when on completion there is a newer and better premise to operate?

A temporary site has been built for them to continue to operate their businesses - to minimise inconveniences for both the owners and their customers who relish the food that they are used to. Some stall-holders or owners (hawker is a misnomer because the stall-holders don't hawk anymore like in the past). Others decide to call it a day and retire or do something different; some wish to spend more time with their family, while others took the opportunity to chiat hong. One needs to understand that not everyone takes the same mode of transport to their destination.

Once the Food Centre is upgraded, the better ambiance and comfort will attract more customers, leading to better businesses and consequent higher income. Naturally there is a cost for better comfort - like many people who are willing to pay very much more for a cup of coffee at Starbucks or MacDonald. They do not grudge; they have a choice - coffee at Ah Seng alfresco kopitiam or coffee at alfresco Starbucks when they bring their girlfriends or clients.

The point is that it takes time to upgrade the Food Centre. Rome was not built in a day. The opportunities or rewards are there if one is patient. Instant gratification often tends to self-destruct. This is the situation that all responsible politicians must understand and assist - and not to agitate the stall-holders and customers for their own political ends.

I FUCK YOUR MOTHER PHUA CHEE BYE!:oIo:

One LANJIAO market takes 11 month, you are definitely not into civil n architecture engineering.
Have you spoken to any of the hawkers there? Have you spoken to any of the hawkers previously affected by the upgrading exercises elsewhere?
Don't fucking crap your shit and disappear! You got alot of pending unanswered questions!

Sianz man. This place has nice food. Now, where can I get the Bak Chor Mee? :(

Why don't the ruling party stop messing with the day to day lives of the ordinary people? KNN, they don't eat at hawker centres, maybe 4 year one time.

I just came after dinner at Bedok South Blk 16 Temasek JC food center.

Spoke to hawkers there, some info are shocking:

It was going to cost S$20+k rental one time up front for less than 1 yr of temp hawker center!
:*::eek:

So the response from the dozens of stalls were ONLY 3 Stalls Are Interested.

So in the end it was a NO-GO for the temp hawker center. :(

It ended up that each hawkers make their own plans, and there is nothing common for a whole. They are each telling customers that they are either moving to some coffee shops miles away or are closing for the rest of this year or stop this business. :(:*:

Closing date seems to be 1.Mar.2012

So call upgrading by famiLEE LEEgime, only refers to the changes they caused to the infrastructure of food centers. We are downgrading our quality & economical food and losing our traditions in the process.:(

1. There is a segment of people throughout the island that need cheap hawker food, ambience cannot fill the stomach. If every hawker center goes thru upgrading, they are forcing these people to pay more to developers and reits.

2. GST for rental also go up.

3. Structually sound hawker centers upgraded for no good enough reasons.

@My0539 still waiting for your enlightenment.

Open Liao price sure go up.

Bloody PAP scums disturbing the rice bowls of these stall holders...If the Govt is really sincere in helping these stall owners, then waive off their rental fees for the temporary hawker centre or the very least give them a discounted rate.. Not by charging an exhorbitant fees from these stall owners who depended on their stalls for business.. I'm sure most of these stall owners and customers don't mind the present Infrastructure of the food centre.. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.. But being a Pay and Pay Govt, leeching money from the People is the main priority for these Scums In White..

Please answer. Will the rental go up after upgrading?

It already happened with several other upgraded hawker centres, one of which I can think of is Clementi Hawker Centre.

After renovation:

1) Rental goes up.
2) Less famous stalls quit/move away.
3) Prices go up.
4) Quantity per serving goes down.
5) Round tables get replaced by rectangular tables... which destroys the ambience.

The Bedok South TJC market is SPACIOUS and airy very rare these days. It reminded me of old Queens Town Mei Ling Rd food center. Stall space are graciously big. Table space are way bigger than most others. These days Yucks they up rentals and prices and give people so little space, greedy famiLEE LEEgime KNN!:*:

i heard from the hawkers from CV that the rental will go up which the govt has already inform the hawkers.
there is no subsidised from the govt.
their sole income will come to a halt until November.
some will rent the empty stall in the coffee shop oppo the hawker.
some will find odd job to sustain their daily expenses.

end of day, no more hawker price. becos of the govt leeching, hawker will charge food court prices next time.

And why not? The stall-holders too need to recover cost and make some profit. Stall-holders are not running a charity business. Customers need to understand this - their revenue goes to them - not to the government. Most stall-holders, if not all, do not pay income tax.

When your flat is upgraded under IUP or other schemes, and you want to sell it, do you expect to sell it at the same price as when you bought it?

Who doesn't want to eat cheap and yet good food? They are hard to come by in a modern city. Those cooked-food we get which is "cheap" is often not good. Which stall-holders sell "good" food and yet sell it at 1970s or 1980s road-side stall price? Even the lousy foreign burgers or pizzas are sold at exorbitant price - yet so many people are willing to patronise them. Business must be good because there are so many of them all over the place.

So let the stall-holders earn their keep. The premise that because there is a segment of the population that needs "cheap hawker food" therefore we must sell cheap hawker food is false.

Very often if there is a "cheap and good hawker food", the people that form the long queue are often not the segment of the population that needs it most. It is like the poor subsidising the rich.

Bottom line : You have a choice(especially in Singapore). You want to live like a Prince - go to Goodwood Park Hotel for their Taiwan Porridge. You want to live ordinary, go to a food stall and order your Teochew porridge.

Ah Tee, you are most welcomed. She will see you in heaven. But before that, you need to go through the 18 stages of HELL. I doubt you can make it through even the first stage.

Be careful hor when you cross the road - don't put on your headset or yak-yak on your handphone. Otherwise.....
