SINGAPORE: It seems police action against drink-driving has had its effect on the year-end party crowd.

From 24-31 December, only three motorists were caught for drink-driving. This compared to the 25 who were arrested in a five-hour ring-fencing operation on 23 December.

The 28 motorists caught, including two women, are aged between 22 and 53.

The Traffic Police say their enforcement actions were conducted near entertainment outlets.

Motorists convicted of drink-drinking will be disqualified from driving for at least 12 months.

First-time offenders can also be fined between S$1,000 and S$5,000, or jailed up to six months.

Repeat offenders may be punished with a maximum fine of S$30,000 and a mandatory jail term of up to three years.

They may also be caned up to six strokes should death or serious injury be caused by drink-driving.
