Mancini frustrated by resilient Chievo

3 May 2015

838421header.jpg

Roberto Mancini rued a lack of creativity as Inter were held to a goalless draw by a resilient defensive display from Chievo in Serie A.

Despite dominating the opening half at San Siro and creating a host of chances, Inter failed to a way through, with Mauro Icardi denied by the post.

Chances continued to come in the second half, but the hosts - who missed the chance to go sixth - needed a bit of luck to hold on for a point as Chievo made a late charge, Samir Handanovic twice denying Alberto Paloschi.

"Unfortunately against a side that defends with everyone behind the ball, if you don't find a breakthrough, it becomes more difficult," Inter head coach Mancini told Sky Sport Italia.

"We are disappointed not to have won, but not for everything else. We were imprecise, as we found the frame of the goal only four times, but had 24 shots on goal.

"Chievo closed up until the end, then ran into the spaces and the only thing we did wrong was not score a goal.

"In these games you need talented players to break the deadlock. We've got some of those players and gave it our best.

"We are disappointed, as we could've caught sixth place today. It remains open."

Garcia lauds ´impressive´ Roma

4 May 2015

838690header.jpg

Roma coach Rudi Garcia described his team's win over Genoa as crucial after they returned to second in Serie A.

Seydou Doumbia and Alessandro Florenzi were on the scoresheet in the 2-0 win as Roma climbed above Lazio.

Late in the season, the win helped Garcia's men take a huge step towards securing UEFA Champions League qualification.

"We were impressive today both physically and tactically. We switched to a 4-4-2 after the break and that made us more balanced," he said.

"After the Atalanta draw, it was important for us mentally to build on the Sassuolo win and get a victory at home.

"Winning at home is vital in terms of qualifying for the Champions League. The fans were great today and all stuck together. That can be really important for our team."

Doumbia opened the scoring in the 35th minute with a neat finish after an error at the back, while Florenzi sealed the victory on the counter-attack.

Garcia lauded his side for their approach.

"It was a good performance from us today and we showed great team spirit, that was vital," he said.

"We knew how Genoa were going to defend by putting men on us all over the pitch. We got the first goal at a good time, but the second came a little late on... for the hearts of the Roma fans.

"It was the right performance from us in terms of tactics, technique and mentality."

From dishwasher to billionaire: Mr Bee only had eyes for AC Milan

963112_heroa.jpg

May 4, 2015 09:00:00

INTERVIEW: In an exclusive with Goal, the Thai businessman tells the story of how he achieved financial success and why he pursued a deal with the Rossoneri
By Kris Voakes | International Football Correspondent

While Juventus were busy securing a fourth successive Scudetto on Saturday, AC Milan were making their own huge step into a future that could bring about even greater glory. The timing was uncanny.

After months of negotiations, Bee Taechaubol agreed terms to buy a sizeable stake in the Rossoneri. And while there was no immediate confirmation as to whether the purchase will lead to the Thai entrepreneur becoming a majority shareholder, his is a portfolio that any club would love to add to their ranks.

"I was a dishwasher at 14 and was in real estate by the time I was 16," Mr Bee told Goal prior to Saturday's announcement. "I worked in the restaurant my parents owned as they were insistent that we must learn the value of work.

"Then I set up an online real estate marketing company which made a huge profit on the stock exchange and went from there.

"But while my family held a huge amount of stock in Thailand, the Asian financial crisis in 1997 led to us actually having the largest debt. When I left Australia, where I had grown up and also gained a qualification in civil engineering, I had only AUS$2,000 to my name.

"I went into several industries after that to make my living. Thankfully, I have been involved in lots of companies in which I have bought low and sold high."

His primary focus is his private equity firm Thai Prime, which invests in public companies and has a high success rate for turning around struggling businesses into huge players in their markets. With interests in a number of sectors - including financial services, construction, property, technology, parking, traffic infrastructure, sports and payment gateways - the company has become a leader across Asia and Australia in its ability to reverse the slides of businesses across the spectrum.

It might sound like a King Midas story, but it certainly doesn’t go to Bee’s head. When it is put to him that he has achieved a lot for a fresh-faced 39-year-old, he appears extremely modest and equally grounded.

"I know I am lucky, and I have a good life. But I still want to live normally. I still take my children to do the grocery shopping at the weekend, and they do chores around the house. We don't have live-in maids or anything like that. It is important that we are a normal family."

The various industries in which he has knowledge have made him countless contacts across the board. Bee once was quoted as saying: "While I don't have billions of baht in cash lying around, I know where to get it," and he says he wants to make a point of clearing up what he meant by that.

"That was my way of saying that I have contacts who are willing to back me and go into partnership with me. I have had lots of people offer their support and show interest in being a part of ventures in lots of areas. Over time I have come to know a lot of people in a lot of industries, so if I want to invest in something it is not difficult for me to find interested parties to join me."

One of his more recent moves has seen him develop the Global Legends Series, which sees football stars who have collected the game's greatest honours congregate for a four-match series in different cities across the world. Legacy plans include the GLS Academy, which is backed by the Ministry of Education and is set to reach around 200 million children across the world in the next five years or so.

1325202_heroa.jpg

Global Legends Series | The concept was founded by Fabio Cannavaro and is promoted by Bee

But Bee's interest in football – and particularly Italian football – demanded that he do more.

"It was Baroness Rothschild who suggested to me that an investment in Milan might be available," he explains. "Her family is not really interested in football and, like me, they will not get involved in something they are not passionate about.

"I started watching Italian football in the early 1990s, when Milan were huge. Serie A was the league to watch for me because there are lots of Italians in Australia, so I was encouraged to watch it by the kids around me. It has always stuck with me, and I've never really gone for any other league.

"That's why in investment terms it was Milan or nothing for me. I wouldn't have made a move on any other club, and have turned down the chance to get involved elsewhere. But I have to be passionately involved, and also I believe in only shooting for the very top. Milan are one of the biggest names in football and could be absolutely huge, the potential is endless."

A man who has made his name arresting the slide of failing companies and raising them to incredible heights is about to buy a significant stake in a football club meeting that definition.

If Bee can deliver even half the impact on the Rossoneri that he has with businesses across so many other industries, one of the game's most celebrated clubs might be about to enter a period like nothing it has experienced before.

Allegri vindicated by Juventus success

4 May 2015

839025header.jpg

Massimiliano Allegri is happy to let Juventus' results back up his leadership of the team as they prepare to host Real Madrid in the UEFA Champions League semi-finals.

Tuesday's first-leg clash in Turin will see Juve play in the competition's final four for the first time since their run to the 2003 final.

After a three-and-a-half-year reign at Milan ended in underwhelming disappointment last term, Allegri was perhaps a surprise choice to replace three-time Serie A-winning Juve coach Antonio Conte in July.

However, having led Juve to a fourth Scudetto in as many seasons, the Coppa Italia final and further in Europe than Conte managed, Allegri is satisfied with his accomplishments so far.

When asked if his season was a good response for any doubters, Allegri responded: "I have absolutely nothing to say.

"In the end, all that counts in football are the results. At the start of the season, everyone can talk, and at the end all the remains are the results.

"For me, what matters is what I've done so far for Juventus. I think the results have been fairly good, and I'm proud."

Turning his attentions to the visit of Real, Allegri knows his players will need to be at the top of their game to cause an upset against the defending champions.

"If we're talking about a Champions League semi-final, we're talking about top teams," Allegri added.

"When you play these games you have to play... I don't want to say a perfect game, because there's no such thing, but you have to do great things in attack and defence.

"I don't think that Juventus-Real Madrid and Real Madrid-Juventus are two games which will end 0-0, so we have to be good, especially in attack.

"They're European champions, so they might be slight favourites ahead of us.

"But it's not a semi-final where we have nothing to lose. If we lose we won't make the final."

After 19 years with the Serie A side, the Argentine's shirt number has been retired and he says he will be eternally grateful

Javier Zanetti has said he will "never forget the moment" that Inter officially retired the No. 4 jersey in his honour on Monday.

The Argentine defender retired at the end of last season, bringing an end to an illustrious career in which he won five Serie A titles, a Champions League crown, a Club World Cup and the Coppa Italia four times after 19 seasons with Inter.

The club announced that they would retire the jersey he made iconic, making the tribute official on Monday after the Expo 2015 charity match at San Siro on Monday.

And Zanetti thanked the club for the gesture.

"I want to thank all of my friends who have been here with us this evening, the atmosphere is great," he said. "I will never forget this moment, thanks to all the people who came to the stadium for the charity game.

"My affection for these people will remain forever, they know what affection and love I have for them, this relationship will never end.

"I will never stop thanking these fans. I humbly built my career here and I faced many opponents with respect and for me it is important that they are here tonight."

Doumbia cleared to make Milan trip

5 May 2015 19:24

839528header.jpg

Roma expect striker Seydou Doumbia to be fit for Saturday's trip to Milan after scans showed no lasting effect from the knock he suffered against Genoa.

The Ivorian opened the scoring at the Stadio Olimpico – his second goal in as many games – but was replaced on the hour as Rudi Garcia's side ran out 2-0 winners.

Doumbia's substitution was deemed as a precaution by Garcia following the win, and the 27-year-old has now been given a clean bill of health.

Having undergone tests on Tuesday, Doumbia returned to light training and was said to be "recovering well" by Roma.

Benitez agent to meet with De Laurentiis

Napoli-coach-Rafael-Ben-t-007.jpg

The agent of Napoli coach Rafael Benitez is to hold talks with club president Aurelio De Laurentiis over the Spaniard's future.

Benitez's future with the Serie A outfit has been up in the air for some time, while recent reports have linked him with potential managerial opportunities at Newcastle United and West Ham.

A banner bearing the words 'Rodgers out Rafa in' was flown above Anfield at the weekend, with some fans calling on Benitez to return to former club Liverpool.

However, the 55-year-old insists, ahead of Thursday's UEFA Europa League semi-final first leg against Dnipro, that his focus remains on guiding Napoli to a first European final since 1989.

"The chairman knows my thoughts and he will speak with my agent," he said. "But after 26 years, the most important thing is this semi-final.

"We know that the final goal is historic for us and for the fans.

"After 26 years, we have a historic opportunity, we have to focus our attentions on this."

Belfodil agrees Parma contract termination

Algeria international Ishak Belfofil has agreed the mutual termination of his contract with financially striken Serie A club Parma.

Parma have endured crippling financial difficulties throughout this season and their relegation to the second tier has already been confirmed.

The Stadio Ennio Tardini outfit have been unable to pay wages all season with Belfodil - a key player reported to be among their higher earners - has agreed the termination of his contract.

"Ishak Belfodil and Parma FC today terminated by mutual consent the contract which would have kept him at the club until June 2018," read a statement on the club's official website.

"With the termination, the player waives all claims against Parma FC, with regard to both the pre-bankruptcy period, and in terms of wages earned but not paid in the interim year.

"The club thanks Ishak Belfodil and wishes him the best for the rest of his career."

Belfodil - a former France youth international - returned to Parma from Inter in 2014 having begun his career in Ligue 1 with Lyon.

Juventus v Cagliari: Festa´s men hope for distracted hosts

7 May 2015 11:40

840411header.jpg

Relegation-threatened Cagliari could benefit from Juventus attention lying elsewhere when the two sides meet in Turin on Saturday.

The 18th-placed Cagliari gave their unlikely hopes of Serie A survival a boost with a thumping 4-0 win over rock-bottom Parma on Monday that saw them close within six points of safety.

Just four matches remain in the season but Cagliari have Atalanta, who sit 17th, in their sights, and will hope Juve - crowned Serie A champions for a fourth season in a row last week - rest and rotate their squad.

Juve's focus will be firmly on the second leg of their UEFA Champions League semi-final on Wednesday. Massimiliano Allegri's men secured a well-earned 2-1 home win over Real Madrid in the opener earlier this week.

And new Cagliari coach Gianluca Festa hopes their win over Parma has given his squad the belief they need to avoid the drop.

"The boys have become aware of their capabilities," Festa told the club's official website.

"[Parma] was a good performance, a new step…to feed hope. Surely we will continue to play with that desire and commitment until the end."

After a winless run of 11 matches, which included nine defeats, Cagliari have won two of their last three, with a tremendous 3-1 success at Fiorentina last month raising spirits.

A party-like atmosphere is expected at Juventus as they play their first league match at home since retaining their Scudetto, secured through a 1-0 win at Sampdoria.

Juve's home end will be made up of 9,500 school children, though, after the stand was shut as punishment for clashes with Torino fans in April. The stand has been re-opened Italian Football Federation accepted Juve's proposal to put school kids in the 'Curva' instead.

If he starts, Serie A top-scorer Carlos Tevez could continue his superb run of form. Tevez, who won and scored a second-half penalty against Real Madrid, has scored five times in his last six league games.

More likely is Alvaro Morata - who opened the scoring against ex-club Real - partnering Spanish compatriot Fernando Llorente, though. Llorente was scratchy off the bench on Tuesday and missed two good chances in the latter stages. Allegri will want him sharp if he is needed in Madrid next week.

Milan v Roma: Garcia´s side face crucial test

7 May 2015 11:56

840414header.jpg

Roma's bid for automatic entry into next season's UEFA Champions League group stages comes to a crucial juncture at struggling Milan on Saturday.

Rudi Garcia's side moved back into second after a 2-0 win over Genoa was followed by Lazio's slip-up at lowly Atalanta, in which they drew 1-1.

With only the top two assured of a place in the group stages of Europe's premier club competition next season - third must go through qualifying - the stakes are high for Roma, one point ahead of Lazio, at San Siro.

A shocking run of form, which saw Roma win just three of 15 league games, put their Champions League hopes in severe jeopardy but back-to-back wins over Sassuolo and Genoa lifted spirits.

And midfielder Alessandro Florenzi, whose stunning stoppage-time strike settled their win last time out, insisted Roma are determined to win their fans over.

"Let's focus on Milan straight away. We need to keep this spirit going," he said.

"We'll have done that [win the fans back] when we finish in second place. That's what we want and that's what they want.

"[Genoa] is an important victory and one that will be good for morale, for the atmosphere around the place and for us players. Let's keep this up."

Seydou Doumbia, who scored the other goal against Genoa, has recovered well from a knock and is expected to play. Midfield star Adem Ljajic is doubtful, though, after travelling to Germany to see a specialist following back pain.

Meanwhile, Milan defender Philippe Mexes, who spent seven years at Roma, acknowledged his side "really can't do much worse" than their current form of five Serie A games without a win.

"We have to stay united, as we all need our team-mates," he told Milan Channel.

"We know the fans are not happy and it's up to us to get them back on our side.

"I have wonderful memories of my time at Roma. I still have a great rapport with Francesco Totti and Daniele De Rossi, but I've been here for four years now and am focused only on Milan. They are fighting for second place, are a united side and have a fine coach."

Serie A Preview: Lazio, Roma look to consolidate

8 May 2015 06:36

840910header.jpg

Roma and Lazio face potentially tough Serie A clashes as they look to secure their places in next season's UEFA Champions League.

Juventus are runaway league leaders as they prepare to host Cagliari on Saturday, with an eye to their Champions League semi-final second leg against Real Madrid.

But the race for second and third is still on with four league matches remaining.

Roma (64 points), Lazio (63) and Napoli (59) are battling to secure qualification to next season's Champions League.

Rudi Garcia's Roma have claimed back-to-back league wins to climb back into second, and they visit Milan on Saturday.

A trip to San Siro is not as daunting as it once was, with Filippo Inzaghi's men struggling in 11th and on a five-match winless run.

Lazio have failed to win three of their past four ahead of hosting Inter on Sunday.

Just like their city rivals, Inter have struggled this season – but they are eighth and unbeaten in six ahead of their trip to the Stadio Olimpico.

Napoli head to already-relegated Parma after a 1-1 draw against Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk in the UEFA Europa League.

Rafael Benitez's men conceded a controversial late goal at home to the Ukrainians, and need to bounce back to keep their top-three chances alive.

Fifth-placed Fiorentina visit Empoli on Sunday looking to ensure they hold onto their Europa League spot.

While Parma are relegated, Cesena and Cagliari – also in the relegation zone – can still fight their way out.

Cagliari have the unenviable task of visiting Juventus, while Cesena host fellow strugglers Sassuolo.

Cesena are nine points behind Atalanta and Cagliari six adrift of the 17th-placed side, who travel to Palermo.

Elsewhere, Chievo meet Hellas Verona, Udinese host Sampdoria and - completing the round on Monday - Genoa take on Torino.

Pogba set to return against Cagliari

8 May 2015 12:32

841020header.jpg

Juventus have been given a huge boost ahead of their UEFA Champions League semi-final second leg, with the news that Paul Pogba is set to return to action at the weekend.

France star Pogba has been out of action since sustaining a hamstring injury in Juve's last-16 meeting with Borussia Dortmund in March.

With a 2-1 lead to protect against Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu on Wednesday, Juve coach Massimiliano Allegri says Pogba is likely to feature against Cagliari on Saturday.

"Pogba trained well yesterday with the ball. He could play tomorrow, either starting or coming off the bench," he said.

With the Serie A title already secure, Allegri confirmed he would rest players ahead of the midweek clash in Madrid.

"I'll change things up tomorrow. It was an energy-sapping game on Tuesday, so we'll give others the chance to play," he said. "Carlos Tevez is to be rested.

"We'll need to put in a great performance in Madrid, an even better one than we showed on Tuesday.

"If we do well and have an element of luck on our side, we can make the final. But Real are an extraordinary team.

"It's important for us to reach a Champions League semi-final in a season where the aim was to get through the group stages.

"Nobody would have imagined we'd be 95 minutes away from Berlin. Or at least we hope it's 95!"

Lazio v Inter: Hernanes expecting emotional Olimpico return

8 May 2015 17:38

841184header.jpg

Inter midfielder Hernanes is expecting an emotional return to the Stadio Olimpico when they visit Lazio in a game that could well prove decisive in the battle for European places.

Hernanes left Lazio for Inter in January 2014 and netted in May's 4-1 win over his former club - a result that confirmed his current employers' place in the UEFA Europa League.

However, Sunday's match in the Italian capital will mark the first time he has faced Lazio away from home since his switch to San Siro.

"I already know that being at the Olimpico will be an emotional moment, it will be a fantastic feeling. It was very difficult to say goodbye to Lazio," Hernanes told Il Messaggero.

"Will I celebrate if I score? We'll have to see what happens in that moment."

Inter are three points adrift of Fiorentina in fifth place and two behind Sampdoria in sixth, which will become a Europa League qualification place should third-placed Lazio - already in the Coppa Italia final - finish in the UEFA Champions League places.

"Lazio don't have an easy schedule," Hernanes added. "They can do it though, they can qualify for the Champions League, they have everything they need. I hope they do well, but after the game against us.

"Mathematically we can still qualify for the Europa League, and that's what we're playing for, starting with the match against Lazio."

Lazio's place in the top three is far from secure following last weekend's 1-1 draw at Atalanta, which left Claudio Lotito's men four points clear of fourth-placed Napoli with four games remaining.

Third would see Lazio take a place in the Champions League play-off round, but Serbian striker FIlip Djordjevic is focused on overhauling city rivals Roma - one point ahead - for second and a spot in the group stage of Europe's premier club competition.

"Both Roma and Napoli have difficult fixtures, like us, but right now we are only thinking of Inter," Djordjevic said after the stalemate with struggling Atlalanta.

"We are one point away from second place, and we want to get it."

Inter are winless in their last four away games with Lazio, the visitors' last success coming back in 2010 under Jose Mourinho.

And, given the two sides' contrasting fortunes this season, Lazio should be confident of making it an unhappy return for Hernanes and taking another step towards qualification for a tournament they have not competed in since 2007.

Inter to pay up to €20m in FFP settlements

8 May 2015 19:00

841226header.jpg

UEFA announced on Friday that 10 clubs have agreed to pay settlements after failing to comply with Financial Fair Play rules.

The likes of Inter, Monaco and Roma will all have to pay fines to European football's governing body, after falling foul of the regulations, which are designed to stop clubs living beyond their means.

Inter will have to hand over a total of €20million, while Monaco will pay €13m.

"The clubs are Besiktas, Inter, Krasnodar, Lokomotiv Moscow, Monaco, Roma and Sporting Lisbon and, for minor breaches, CSKA Sofia, Karabukspor and Rostov," a statement read.

"The CFCB [Club Financial Control Body] Investigatory Chamber also announced that Wolfsburg have been found (following the submission of additional financial information) to have satisfied the break-even requirement and are no longer under investigation.

"These settlement agreements aim to ensure that each club achieves break-even compliance with minimal delay, and are defined by Articles 14(1)(b) and 15 of the Procedural Rules governing the CFCB."

Job not done for Juve - Del Piero

9 May 2015 02:35

841439header.jpg

Juventus great Alessandro Del Piero warned his former club it would take a team effort to complete the job against Real Madrid.

Massimiliano Allegri's men claimed a 2-1 win over Real in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League semi-final tie on Tuesday.

The Serie A champions head to the Santiago Bernabeu on Wednesday looking to reach the final of Europe's elite club competition for the first time since 2003.

Del Piero, who was at Juve from 1993-2012, said it would take a team performance to ensure the Italian giants get through.

"These matches are fascinating. You don't know who will be the key player. I hope that the team will be the key," he said.

"It is impossible to win in a difficult stadium against very good players with no teamwork."

Inzaghi: I'm not feeling the heat at AC Milan

filippo-inzaghi-milan_wy8dad5nhw4s1hadyi02e6mm3.jpg

By Mark Doyle
May 8, 2015 22:46:29

The 41-year-old has denied that he looks a broken man after a dismal dip in form but acknowledged that both he and his team are in dire need of a win

Filippo Inzaghi has dismissed the suggestion that he is cracking under the pressure at AC Milan, insisting that he remains "happy" at San Siro.

The former Italy international only succeeded Clarence Seedorf at the helm last summer but, after a relatively encouraging first half of the season, the Rossoneri suffered a dramatic dip in form at the turn of the year.

Indeed, Milan have now gone five Serie A games without a win, losing their last three in succession, and it has been claimed that Inzaghi is starting the feel the strain of having his position openly discussed on a daily basis.

However, the World Cup winner says that he is still enjoying his job and is ignoring all of the speculation surrounding both his future and that of the club, with owner Silvio Berlusconi set to sell a significant amount of shares to Thai businessman Bee Taechaubol.

"I am very lucky and happy and I am certainly not tired," the 41-year-old told reporters on Friday.

"But talking about Milan’s future right now is not something I am interested in.

"When you have a president like Silvio Berlusconi you know you are in good hands because he wants the best for Milan."

Milan currently sit 11th in Serie A, nine points behind fifth-placed Fiorentina, who, as it stands, occupy the final Europa League berth.

Given there are just four rounds of the season remaining, the Rossoneri's hopes of qualifying for Europe are all but over, but Inzaghi is still calling on his players to finish their campaign with a flourish, starting with Saturday's clash with Roma at the Giuseppe Meazza.

"I am aware that it will be a tough match but also very appealing as we’re going to be facing a side fighting for a Champions League finish and in need of points," he stated.

"But we have four games left to finish the season strongly and with our heads held high.

"To beat Roma we clearly have to play the perfect match and that’s what we’re hoping for.

"I think by doing this we can come away with a positive result as both the team and I are in need of one right now.

"During our first meeting earlier in the season we played very well but I'm upset that after that game that we haven’t been able to continue improving.

"I hope that we can find that identity again in these final four matches."

Gomez staying at Fiorentina - agent

10 May 2015

841975header.jpg

Fiorentina striker Mario Gomez will not be leaving the Serie A club, according to agent Uli Ferber.

Gomez's future in Florence has come under the spotlight following Fiorentina's 3-0 first-leg loss to Sevilla in the UEFA Europa League semi-finals on Thursday.

However, Ferber insisted the Germany international remains committed to the club.

"He was described as a hero two weeks ago after the quarter-final against Dynamo Kiev," Ferber told Bild.

"People mustn’t go overboard one way or the other. We have absolutely not changed our minds and Fiorentina have sent no new signals either.

"Mario feels at home in Florence and it is here that he wants to achieve his objectives."

Gomez, who moved to Italy from German champions Bayern Munich in 2013-14, has scored 10 goals in all competitions for Fiorentina this term.

Berlusconi warns investors

10 May 2015

841983header.jpg

Silvio Berlusconi said he will not sell Milan to someone "looking for immediate popularity" as Thai investor Bee Taechaubol looks to purchase a majority stake in the club.

Bee appeared set to complete his takeover of Milan a few weeks ago but a deal has seemingly stalled, with talks ongoing.

And Berlusconi said on Saturday that he is unwilling to sell the club unless his demands are met.

"Selling this club for me means selling a piece of my heart, my infancy, when my father took me to the stadium," the former Italian prime minister told Telenord, a regional broadcaster in Liguria.

"I am looking for someone who will put capital into Milan straight away. I am prudent, because I won't sell to someone who is looking for immediate popularity because Milan is in fact a widespread brand in the world.

"I'm careful to discover the true intentions of those who offers to take over from me as shareholders of Milan. I'm ready to make a sacrifice and to detach myself from Milan, but only after checking the real intentions of those who want to buy the club.

"If these negotiations don't go the way we hope, I will go forward with another project to create an all-Italian Milan.

"I want to make the club a sort of Nazionale in a league where others have really exceeded with foreign imports.

"Just think that last year's Coppa Italia Final had just one Italian starting and our Azzurri Coach had to call up Oriundi [a word applied to immigrants who are of Italian descent but were born outside the country] to make a competitive side."

Milan are 10th in Serie A with three matches remaining, after stunning second-placed Roma 2-1 on Saturday.

Cesena have been relegated from Serie A after just one season back in Italy's top division.

The Emilia-Romagna club headed into Sunday's home clash with Sassuolo realistically needing a win to keep their top-flight hopes alive, as well as Atalanta tripping up at Palermo.

Atalanta's 3-2 victory in Sicily made Cesena's result immaterial, but their fans still had to endure a miserable afternoon as they threw away a two-goal lead to go down 3-2.

Cesena's season began with a victory over Parma, though they failed to pick up another three-point haul until January, when they travelled to the Ennio Tardini.

As a result, Cesena have spent the last 26 matchweeks in the drop zone, with Sunday's failure representing a 10th game without a win.

Domenico Di Carlo replaced last-season's promotion-winning coach Pierpaolo Bisoli in the dugout in December and the former's job prospects are likely to become gloomy after taking a club that has changed boss seven times in the last five years.

Mancini: I would understand if Handanovic wants to leave Inter

Inter head coach Roberto Mancini says he would understand if goalkeeper Samir Handanovic sought a move away from the club.

Slovenia international Handanovic made some fine saves in Inter's 2-1 win at Lazio on Sunday, as Hernanes' double against his former club saw off a brave fight from the nine-man hosts at Stadio Olimpico.

Handanovic's future at Inter is unclear, though, with the 30-year-old keen to play in the UEFA Champions League - a competition that Inter will miss out on again next season.

"I think he's one of the best goalkeepers in Europe, let's see what will happen in the coming weeks," Mancini told Sky Sport Italia after the win.

"I have read that he would like to play in the Champions League, we cannot guarantee that next season. I can understand that."

There was plenty of drama in Inter's victory as Hernanes levelled proceedings in the 26th minute with a low free-kick in the aftermath of a straight red card for Lazio defender Mauricio.

Lazio, who had taken the lead through Antonio Candreva, then had goalkeeper Federico Marchetti sent off for bringing down Mauro Icardi just after the hour and, although the striker missed the resulting penalty, Hernanes scored a second six minutes from time.

"We wasted many scoring opportunities and when a team is down to nine men they try to close the spaces," Mancini added.

"In the end we were still able to win. We played better than against Udinese when we were in the same situation. Lazio is a great team, it was not easy."
