Chitchat Anyone buy a motherboard & processor from Amazon?

I'm making another shopping list for Black Friday & I notice that many of the motherboards & processors are now shipping to Spore & even the shipping if FREE. You have to pay the duty of course. In the past I've only bought RAM & SSDs but hey shipping is FREE.

So I'm thinking of getting a new system which has the newer connectivity options like USB 3.1, PCIe connectors for the latest SSDs, ....

Curious about the experience of others?

My i7 processor is about 3+ years old & trying to decide if I should upgrade to a i5 or an i7 Skylake or wait until the release of Cannon ball:confused:
I use my PC to watch movies & downloading plenty of torrents at the same time. Sometimes I have 100+ torrents downloading at the same time & it can sometimes slow my system down when I have too many popular torrents I'm sharing with peers. So would more cores or a faster processor help:confused:

I was checking fuckwarezone & they have thread on buying stuff from Amazon but not everyone can or wants to buy US$125 worth of things to qualify for the free shipping. So people are sharing their orders to satisfy the US$125 requirement. So if you want to get something from Amazon but have problem meeting the $125 requirement maybe you can pool your order with others.

Buy a new computer lah. Definitely more than $125!

Amazon is selling many, many,.. things & not just computers. The last time I bought my RAM & Samsung SSD from there. For myself I have never had problems meeting this $125 requirement probably because I don't buy things on impulse but plan my purchases.

For example this time around I will be buying many smaller & cheaper items for my kitchen e.g. nut milk bag, a garlic press, grater, spatula, lemon squeezer, chef knife, infusion water pitcher, knife block,...etc. I've checked locally & many of the things on my shopping list are either not available locally or the quality is inferior.

However not everyone can wait. Some may need to buy something urgently & cannot satisfy the US$125 minimum. So they share orders with others.

hi, u are not into gaming or graphics design.

So for surfing net, watching movies, downloads, your i7 is sufficient as you have SSD drive too. Maybe u just need to up the RAM to 12GB.
Otherwise, no point changing processor or motherboard for your main usage.

Hi Johnny, my earlier reply did not appear.

You may wish to increase your RAM to 12GB. As you are not into gaming or graphics design, there is no need for you to upgrade your motherboard or processor as you have an earlier i7 processor.

I actually need to replace a dead PC.

I have 2 PC, a Mac & iPad. I use the Mac & one of the PCs strictly for serious things like online trading, buying things online, .. etc.
I try to use the Mac for all my serious work but one of my brokerage accounts requires a PC running windows & Microsofts Internet Explorer to run the proprietary platform. All my PCs & Mac have 16GB of RAM.

I'm not an expert with Windows so I try to keep one of the PCs secure by not exposing it unnecessarily & only use it for online trading. I don't even use that PC to check my email, in case I receive an infected email. I usually use my Mac or iPad to check my emails. My 2nd PC is the one which is the most vulnerable. It is the one I use to torrent, for Kodi, surf the internet,.... If I get a virus or Trojan I can simply erase & re-install everything.

Recently one of my PCs broke. This PC has an AMD processor. I've isolated the problem to either the motherboard or processor. So I'm taking the opportunity to replace a defective motherboard/processor. I can reuse the older SSD, HDDs & DVD drive. I try to buy quality parts so that they can be used a long time e.g. I use platinum rated power supplies in both PCs & only use branded RAM & mouse.

Yeah, if u can get free shipping, and can wait, get from amazon.. i buy all my PC stuffs from amazon.... forgo warranty only, but most things i upgrade them even before they are spoilt. Sign up for amazon prime and you can watch alot of movies online and get free local shipping before you ship back, it's the best $90 buck you can spend.

I'm also a prime member but I don't watch the movies because I don't have VPN, so thinking about discontinuing. I'm not much of a shopper usually only order things during Black Friday.

I don't think you have to be a member to enjoy free shipping to Spore & I prefer to chose items that are sold & fulfilled by Amazon which usually included free shipping. Now that Amazon is going to open in Spore I wonder about the need to be a prime member?

you never bought from Qoo10 ? you could get 35% off for computer hardware from a certain shop days ago.

buying from Amazon, it might be too much of a hassle to claim international warranty. buy local distributor stocks if the price difference isn't that much.

Of course I have used Qoo10, & Lazada.
I bought my 2 robots from there. I could have saved some $ if I got them from the US but since the robots were expensive items, I opted to buy local for the local support.

If Amazon does not ship to Spore I will check with ebay because they will usually ship the same product to Spore & if I still want to get it from Amazon, there is always the option of using a freight forwarder. The problem with my freight forwarder is that they use DHL. I will get my items within 3 days after I tell them to release the shipment to Spore. However DHL can be expensive & they are very strict on what they will ship out.

For example they will not handle perfumes, porn, weapons, anything with a lithium battery, oils(even a small can of sewing machine oil), ... They are stricter than other companies. When I bought my Dyson vacuum cleaner from eBay, I had no problems using their in house international shipping even though the Dyson uses a lithium ion battery.

I'm sometimes surprised at what eBay can ship internationally. The largest item I got from ebay was an american branded rebounder. Those things are huge.

no battery and oils even by sea freight ?

haven't bought from eBay for years. last time, bought China items from there but switched to Taobao now. is eBay still a competitive buying and selling platform ? the competition is fierce nowadays.

If you buy via eBay there you can order things with lithium batteries since merchants there use ebays global shipping services. My Dyson was a hand held vacuum cleaner that had a lithium battery & they sent it to me in Spore by air. I think the person who sends the order has to do extra work e.g. packing it correctly, filling up forms, declaring it, etc.

I was using Borderlinx when I ordered some items that included a small can of sewing machine oil. They emailed me that they couldn't send that can of oil so had to ask them to discard it before they would release the shipment to Spore :( It was only a $5 sewing machine oil but it was still a waste to discard it.

From experience I've learned to check with the freight forwarder BEFORE buying purchasing anything containing oils & batteries. The regulations of what they will & will not ship is ever changing, so it's better to check.

If you are buying things like shoes & clothes Taobao is ok.

However I wouldn't buy electronics from them because I want the genuine brands. There are even fakes in Amazon & that is why if possible I buy the items sold by & fulfilled by Amazon. It reduces the chances of getting a fake.

ALLAH-mak..............spare a thought for our local sellers lah.................especially those at Sim Lim.............

I would really prefer to buy electronics locally for the support, but if you compare the prices in Spore with Amazon, one would save a minimum of 15%.
Surprisingly the prices at Fuwell which is a shop at Sim Lim Square is better than a local online merchant advertising in Qoo10.

Our merchants have never given consumers a break. In the past they have simply passed the costs to the consumer rather than complaining to the landlords. Now many are struggling & going out of business. Once Amazon opens in Spore expect more local shops to go out of business.

Just bought myself some 32GB DDR4 RAM & from the experience I have to warn people that although FREE shipment is indicated. The shipping cost may be added, at least in my case:eek:

The RAM I ordered was advertised advertised for $204.99 with FREE shipping when I put in my basket & checked out the final price was around $211+ which included a shipping cost of about $7. This despite my double checking to make sure that shipping was FREE & I had selected the cheapest shipping option which is suppose to be FREE.

The total cost of the RAM is still much cheaper than what you can get in Spore & that is why I didn't cancel the order when I saw what was going on.

Another thing I noticed is that if the price differential between Spore & Amazon depends on the motherboard you are buying. If it is an entry level product you will probably save about $50 to $80. Basically you bring down the cost to a price without the GST. However you will save big $$$ if the motherboard you want to buy has all the bells & whistles e.g. the high end ASUS ROG Maximus family of motherboards. The markup in Spore is very high compared to the US.

I'm still waiting for the Black Friday sales to see what kind of deals they have before deciding on what to buy, local or from Amazon

If you buy quality parts they should last a few years & you can recycle the parts when you update. I'm still using my old, old,.. graphics card & creative tech soundcard. I'm not into gaming so don't need a fast graphics card & the old sound cards are more than adequate.

When I bought the soundcard it was considered state of the art & is still better than what you find in most current motherboards. I'm looking at an update because because I want to turn my computer into a media system with a HiFi sound system & connections to my TV & iPad.

Black Fridays is on Novemer 25th. I usually make a shopping with a record of the price before the sale begins. On Black Friday I will check on these items again & see if the prices are cheaper. If cheaper I will buy. Here are some popular online shops :

Amazon, https://www.amazon.com/
ebay, http://www.ebay.com/
Qoo10, http://list.qoo10.sg/
Lazada, http://www.lazada.sg/

it is because amazon introduced charging import fees to the buyer. prior to 2016, i don't remember seeing this import fee bullshit whenever i checked out my purchases at amazon.

P.S. have you tried newegg? it could be cheaper and there is more variety there.
