JAKARTA: Indonesia's President Joko Widodo on Saturday postponed his visit to Australia due to a security situation in the Indonesian capital following violence at huge protest by Muslims against Jakarta's governor, a Christian they say insulted the Koran.

Both governments issued separate statements on Widodo's decision to remain in the country.

"Looking at the latest situation and condition in Indonesia that require the presence of the president, President Joko Widodo decided to postpone his scheduled state visit to Australia," a statement from his office said.

At a news conference held in the early hours of Saturday, Widodo lashed out at "political actors", whom he did not name, for stoking a huge protest by Muslims that briefly turned violent on Friday night.

Tens of thousands of Muslims demanded the resignation of Jakarta's governor, Basuki Tjahaja Purnama, a Christian and the first ethnic Chinese to hold the position, over allegations that he had insulted the Koran.

One person died and more than 100 were injured in the clashes, many of them police officers, Indonesian national police spokesman Boy Rafli Amar said in a press conference on Saturday.

Some 15 people were arrested for looting a minimart in north Jakarta, while 10 were being investigated for allegedly whipping up violence, Amar said, noting that the two incidents were not directly related.

Three vehicles were burned and 18 damaged, he added. "This is an example of the shocking attacks by these anarchists."

On Saturday morning, most protesters appeared to have dispersed, military officers were seen resting and workers were fixing some damaged facilities at the National Monument.

I have 2 neighbours that are Indonesians. One who purchased & the other who is renting. The unit next door used to be rented by an american family but since they went back to the US, it has been vacant.

Most Christians in Indonesia are Chinese (and a few other indigenous ethnic groups) but most Chinese in Indonesia are Buddhist.

They are working class chinese indonesian. The Indos & Sporeans who have maids are those with children. Reality in Spore is that when both parents are working they need someone to look after kids & house.

The Chinese Indos who own many Singapore private property are business class. The working class Chinese Indos are at the miminum professionals in Indonesia (doctor, lawyer) or they are the ones with enough money to pursue their studies in Singapore or Australia. The place you live is probably not very expensive so you have working class Chinese Indo neighbors just renting. They are working class in Singapore and their parents would own a small to medium sized business in Indonesia. That would be the norm.

Chinese Indonesians who live in Indonesia are never salaried employees. They would have business, ranging from huge empires of billionaires to small shop owners. They say the money one earns salaried staff is too little, no Chinese do it. But all the m&ds take up those jobs.

I once had a Chinese Indo ex colleague, parents owned a freehold large 4 bedroom Orchard condo and another Redhill condo. She calls herself "middle class", she said the condos are not paid in full and her familys money is nothing and put them at "middle class", her exact words. Her family isn't even from Jakarta but Medan and just own a small business as Middle man exporting rubber, they buy the tapped rubber produce from the m&d rubber tappers. The Chinese Indo considered rich are the ones buying a few $28 million mansions in cash in various countries. They are multi multi millionaires and billionaires. Her family is probably in the $2-4 million fluid cash range and are middle class for Chinese Indos.
