Old Man could not be bothered if you are gay, straight, transgender or lost as long as you could serve him politically. And he had known gays and lesbians in grassroots organisation since early days. In those days, homophobia was not not even a fad, people accepted that you were different but you could not officially marry. The classic case was Ahmad Mattar the minister. .

The Govt on the other hand like most govts around the World at that time had a policy of not allowing civil servants to hold sensitive positions and it applied to NS men and regulars. They were never ever asked to leave the civil service but moved to a less sensitive position where blackmail and extortion would not be a factor to compromise state secret. Their pay and grade remained intact as well as their opportunity for promotion.

In 2001, cabinet quietly changed the policy about gays and sensitive positions. Subsequently the change in policy was announced by GCT in 2003.

His grandson his inclination and associating with likes of Stuart Koe and company took place long before any changes even occurred. Mr Krishnasamy M, 60, security supervisor, specially made the trip to the Istana after his night shift at a condo in Orchard. He was visibly emotional and said his "heart was as heavy as the dark clouds today".

He shared how Mr Nathan did not turn his family away once when they approached him at Marine Parade last year.

"At that time, I was struggling to make ends meet, my wife couldn't work, and I was the sole breadwinner . I cried myself day and night because I couldn't make ends meet... But he told me there's a door, and how I can build myself up and go for my dreams. He showed us the light in the darkness," he said.

Since then, Mr Krishnasamy, then a security guard, became inspired to take up extra security skill advanced courses to become a security supervisor.

All I can say to these school children is think independently. You are so good in school and so good in doing research for your papers. So some research into this man and see him for the traitor that he is. DO not be swayed by the govt propaganda and spin machinery. Don't waste your time to come here in your school uniform to pay respect to a man who does not deserve it. Better to spend this time with your parents and enjoy a meal and cherish your time with them.

Maybe love is greater than hate?

First, the YMCA School enrols mainly non-Singaporeans. Second, the school is just round the corner, not much effort needed to go to the Istana.

Most interestingly, the current YMCA building (where the school is) stands on the site of the old YMCA building, which was used as Kempetai HQ during WW2.
