It is fucking absurd! The only way to stop a moving train is to call in and wait for a response!! What would happen if the tracks are on fire or it is otherwise imperative that the train stops ASAP?

Mind boggling!

Also equally mind boggling that a train missing a stop does not trigger an immediate emergency. I would think that situation would be an immediate cause to halt the train!

This is PAP inventing new definitions not in the dictionary. A flood is ponding.

I guess in the eyes of Desmond Quack, there are different kinds of stops. Every one in the world has gotten it wrong. They thought a stop means no movement, stationary, etc. But I guess for Quack there is a difference between an emergency stop and a regular stop. LOL. According to Dessie, even when you are at a complete stop, then you can only at that time press the emergency halt request button. But if the train is already at a complete stop, why then do you need to press the emergency halt button? hahahhaha.

"Ms Bong referred to an emergency button being pressed several times. She was probably referring to the Emergency Halt Request button. We would like to clarify that this button can only be activated when a train comes to a complete stop at a station, to prevent it from moving off again," Mr Nathan said.

ENOUGH SAID!!! Why do they put the stupidest guy in charge of Research and Intelligence when they obviously don't have any? hahahahhahaha.

many years ago when i was working on the North East Line for Alstom Transport, few didn't realise that refurbished signalling boards were used for the train stations. meaning, if the ATC(used to move the driverless trains) is down, all they do is replace the broken board with another broken one, but refurbished only. so do expect more train breakdowns in time to come until they really overhaul every single boards with new ones, that was what i heard that they are doing now.

If only the train crashed, would have charged the course of history for singapore, what a incredible stroke of luck the call went thru before they hit another train.could have been the first riot and protest in sg in 41 years.

these train systems although driverless and the boards are refurbished, it won't crash the trains. they have safety circuits in place nad once triggered, the trains won't move.

what u mean proximity sensors?who knows?planes have incoming collision detection too and they still end up crashing anyway.if these trains relied on a antenna to tell them when to stop at a station, and if that failed the train just keep going on forever and ever,u can tell its programming and a.i. isnt very smart.

think about it,if these LRT was smart enough, and it detected that the distance between it and the next train is getting closer and closer and shorter and shorter,it should have triggered an alarm and slowed the train down and sent a warning to the traffic controller.there should also be sensors at the train stations and along the tracks.maybe a train ahead has broken down, maybe theres congestion ahead or maybe the train itself has gone gila and has been infected by a virus and is now on a "Speed" mission and must travel at 50km/h and above otherwise the bomb will go off.

hahahahaha, this is the most ridiculous thing I have heard in a long time. Emergency Stop button can only be used when the train is at a complete stop? hahahaha.

A repeat of "Naming Marina Bay, Marina Bay." And that cost $400K. Ha Ha.

You can see from the response that he has no idea what the key issues of the passengers are. It has been the case for sometime. Remember when the 2 trainees died, his and Desmond's initial response was that all procedures were followed.

The fact that Desmond was allowed to fill his mgmt with SAF hires shows raw arrogance. If he had hired true rail experts no one would have been upset. It's only now that they are recruiting proven expats. When we need qualified foreigners they recruit their cronies. When we don't need foreigners we do the opposite.

I really don't know who is running SMRT but frankly they sound like ninnies. What exactly is the meaning of "emergency". This is a runaway train. If the public is not alarmed about this then they really deserve what's coming to them. This is scary stuff.

He was hired as the new head security when the foreign graffiti gang cut the fence for a second time and the press made it an issue. When Desmond's only non SAF hire to the Mgmt team - a female from an established PR resigned within months citing dysfunctional organisation, they promoted their head of physical security to take over PR and Strategy. Patrick Nathan is the blue eyed boy of Head of Civil Service and former Perm Sec Mindef. He pulled Patrick into PMO when he became Head of Civil Service.

So have someone not qualified to do the job.

True rail experts do not want to work for SMRT when its filled with cronies. Look at what happened to the rail professionals that were here and let go by Saw PH for cheaper, more obedient FT workers who don't know what they want. If Quack did the right thing and hired true rail professionals, the first step they would have to do would be to fire all the inexperienced useless shits they have and hire qualified people. Labour costs go up. They would then have to institute a strict regime of preventative maintainance, so another huge cost coming. In the end, profits go down, parent company Stomachsick not happy. Aunty ho call Quack into her office and spanks his backside. In the end, better for him to keep all these professionals away and he can still get to have his ass kissed and balls carried by lower ranking ex RSAF retired officers. Transferring all the costs to LTA just allows him to continue to hire morons and let LTA do the real engineering work.

This is the part that I don't get about Kuek - knowing that Saw lost her job because of rail engineering negligence it would have been in his best and personal interest to get the rail engineering experts. After all the embarrassment of throwing out Saw pubic would have opened up the purse strings.

The guy is an SAF OMS, Engineering discipline from Oxford, Chief of Defence Force, Perm Sec and he ends up making a decision that is rife with danger. Even a donkey on a noon break would have decided to hire true rail professionals. Can you imagine if we went to war and we depend on people like that to a make decision.

Naturally a whole series of engineering disasters began to follow and continues unabated.

What does the emergency button do?......if you are in a moving something....there is an emergency button, the thing you are traveling in does not stop at the intended stop & had over ran....you see that emergency button...YOU PRESS IT..when do you expect to get, when it is pressed.....naturally it stop the moving thing you are in...RIGHT?

IT DOES NOT STOP....ok!.....it should alert something who will stop...RIGHT?....then, what's the use of that BUTTON if it does nothing?......I know...PREPARE TO DIE....& they will write you down an unnatural death, naturally pressing an emergency button.... ha ha ha ha

Ms. Bong...must now, go BONG HER HEAD....such a simple answer....:biggrin::biggrin::biggrin:

Bro, I am still in shock about their reply on the emergency button. The fact that it does not register anywhere in their system is mind blowing incredible.

Why should the train stop? It's not like it's gonna hit the train in front is it?

If a train fails to stop at the station it already means something is seriously wrong. An automatic alert should be triggered that would slow or stop the train and alert station control that immediate action needs to be taken. It can't be that the train didn't stop at the station and no one knew until someone phoned it in.

If there is no risk of a runaway train hitting somebody or something, then there's no harm letting it run round and round.

Maybe an alert system costs money. Maybe it's cheaper to let the train run round and round until someone from the control station notices and does something about it.
