On May 9, The New Paper published the article, “Best showing, but should Dr Chee be going?” by its reporter Foo Jie Ying. The report featured prominently academic Eugene Tan from the Singapore Management University (SMU) who was also a Nominated Member of Parliament (NMP).

In addition, a separate article titled “Law prof: Chee lacks staying power” appeared as a sidebar to the main story, also carrying the views of Prof Eugene Tan.

Few people expect high-level journalism from a tabloid like The New Paper. But for an academic to make unsubstantiated and biased comments in the two articles is not an acceptable practice in the academic community.

Below are some examples of Prof Tan’s bizarre tirade:

Example 1: “[Dr Chee is] trying to milk voters’ sympathy. He was trying essentially to reinforce that he has been persecuted – not only him, but his entire family has had to suffer, and so that’s why he’s deserving of people’s support.”

Dr Chee has been vilified, sued, bankrupted, jailed by the PAP in the past 24 years in his work to advance democracy in Singapore. All this has come at a huge personal cost to himself and to his family. However, he has never used that as grounds for support – least of all in this the Bukit Batok by-election campaign.

Dr Chee himself was the one to call for the campaign to focus on issues. It was PAP’s Grace Fu who said that Dr Chee was not fit to run a Town Council because he was unemployed.
This elicited a stern response from Singaporeans who saw Ms Fu’s attack as below the belt. Dr Chee then explained that he chose to remain in Singapore to continue with the political fight instead of leaving for other countries which would have allowed him to continue his academic career.

To say that Dr Chee is now trying “to milk voters’ sympathy” flies in the face of reality and is an insult to a loving and supportive family who have has stood by Dr Chee through all the years.

Example 2: “The law don [Prof Tan] said he also saw Dr Chee’s hunger for power in the by-election. When the People’s Action Party (PAP) incumbent MP David Ong resigned, Dr Chee was the one who decided he would contest in the by-election. ‘He made the decision on his own accord. Unless he did a CEC (central executive committee) meeting over the phone,’ [Prof Tan] said. Calling SDP Dr Chee’s alter ego, he said: ‘The election was not about the party, or even the voters. It was all about him.’”

SDP CEC meetings are internal party meetings that non-CEC members and particularly non-members are not privy to. We are curious to know how Prof Tan came to the conclusion that no CEC meeting was called to discuss the candidacy for the Bukit Batok by-election.

It is quite shocking for an academic to make such a statement when he has no knowledge of how the decision for the SDP’s candidate for the by-election was made.

For the record, an extraordinary CEC meeting was held on 16 March 2016 to decide on the SDP’s candidate for the by-election and it was a unanimous decision of the CEC to field Dr Chee.

Being an academic myself, I am appalled at how a law professor from the SMU could mount such a vicious attack on Dr Chee without even bothering to check the facts.

Example 3: “I have never seen [Dr Chee] sitting down to help people work through their issues. He has never really held a Meet-the-People Session. He’s not interested in helping people. He’s interested in getting elected into office.”

This is the kind of language we would expect from the PAP but certainly not from an academic. How does Dr Chee hold a Meet-The-People (MTP) Session when he is not an MP? As for non-MTP Sessions, we had organised events in the past to meet with residents and listen to their problems but was stopped by PAP town councils.

If Prof Tan had bothered to check with us, he would have found out that the SDP had made arrangements for one of the residents in Bukit Batok who was an amputee to receive a prosthetic leg. In addition, the SDP tried to organise health-screening for Bukit Batok residents only to be stopped by the Jurong-Clementi Town Council. We are also in the process of building a wheelchair ramp for a resident who has asked but failed to get the Town Council to install one. More recently at the national level, we spoke up for Mdm Felicia Seah after she contacted Dr Chee over her son’s (Dominique Lee) death in the SAF.

How does Prof Tan come to the conclusion that Dr Chee is “not interested in helping people” from all this?

Example 4: “[Dr Chee] claims he understands what the heartlander issues are because he lives in a small flat. Let’s see what he does, whether he will go into deep hibernation or churn out policy papers which are out of touch with reality.”
The language and content in the former NMP’s comment betrays his political motivation and, worse, reflects poorly on an academic who seems not to have read any of the material that he refers to.

The SDP has published detailed and comprehensive policy papers addressing issues such as poverty, income inequality, unaffordable public housing, expensive healthcare, an unnecessarily stressful education system, minimum wage, greater financial support for the poor and elderly, and retrenchment insurance.

Many of the ideas we proposed have been co-opted by the PAP or echoed by its MPs.

Yet, the SMU don thinks that these policy papers are “out of touch with reality”. The comment seems more a reflection of his limited grasp of what concerns Singaporeans than of the content of our policy papers.

These papers took much effort and time to research. They could not have been written if the SDP or Dr Chee had gone into “deep hibernation”.

In addition, there is much behind-the-scenes work which the public, including Prof Tan, does not see. These include planning and administrative work for our ground campaign, fund-raising, training of members and volunteers and so on – both during and in between elections.

All these require full-time attention which Dr Chee has provided throughout his leadership of the party. It is shocking that despite all this, Prof Tan asks cynically whether Dr Chee will go into “deep hibernation” after this by-election.

It is not that academics cannot or should not commentate on politics and its practitioners. In fact, we feel strongly that our society lacks such participation by Singaporeans and would like to see more of it.

We are, however, deeply troubled by Prof Eugene Tan’s unhinged rant on Dr Chee which seems to be based on personal animosity untethered to facts and reason.
One does wonder how the SMU would react if such commentary from one of its staff – even if it did not carry so much unsubstantiated vitriol – was directed at the PAP instead of Dr Chee.

BEST SHOWING, BUT SHOULD DR CHEE BE GOING?

UNLIKELY THAT SDP CHIEF WILL EVER GET ELECTED INTO PARLIAMENT, SAY POLITICAL OBSERVERS

May 9, 2016 6:00am
BY FOO JIE YING

Singapore Democratic Party secretary-general Chee Soon Juan is adamant he will stay on in politics despite garnering only 38.79 per cent of the votes in the recent Bukit Batok by-election.

After his thank you parade yesterday, he told reporters he intends to continue his work in Bukit Batok SMC.

But is his string of five losses in close to 25 years an indication that he should leave instead?

Political analyst Mustafa Izzuddin told The New Paper: "As much as I believe the Bukit Batok by-election was Dr Chee's swansong in his political career, I do not believe he will quit politics, because it has been in his DNA for more than 20 years."

National University of Singapore sociologist Tan Ern Ser agreed, adding that there are many examples of opposition leaders elsewhere whose tenacity eventually paid off.

"Moreover, he has already invested much time and energy in politics and it'd seem like a waste to his cause (to exit politics)," he said.

Dr Chee's performance in the recent polls is his best to date.

But Dr Mustafa, a fellow at the Iseas-Yusof Ishak Institute, remains sceptical about Dr Chee's chances of being elected into Parliament.

"As much as one has to applaud the determination of Dr Chee to keep going despite losing every time he has contested, it is highly doubtful that he will strike parliamentary gold eventually.

"It will take an extraordinary turn of events, both politically and economically, for Dr Chee to make it into Parliament under the current circumstances of entrenched one-party dominance," he explained.

Associate Professor Eugene Tan from the Singapore Management University, on the other hand, saw a possibility with a caveat: Dr Chee needs to make a "substantive change".

But he quickly added: "I don't think a leopard will ever change its spots."

He said: "This is someone who's trying to milk voters' sympathy. He was trying essentially to reinforce that he has been persecuted - not only him, but his entire family has had to suffer, and so that's why he's deserving of people's support."

POWER HUNGER

The law don said he also saw Dr Chee's hunger for power in the by-election.

When the People's Action Party (PAP) incumbent MP David Ong resigned, Dr Chee was the one who decided he would contest in the by-election.

"He made the decision on his own accord. Unless he did a CEC (central executive committee) meeting over the phone," he said.

Calling SDP Dr Chee's alter ego, he said: "The election was not about the party, or even the voters. It was all about him."

Political experts pointed to what they felt is a more pertinent question: Should Dr Chee continue to be the SDP's main man?

Said Dr Mustafa: "The decision SDP has to make is whether they would want to remain a Chee-centric party or look beyond Dr Chee, with others fronting the party, going forward.

"While one can foresee SDP contesting Bukit Batok SMC again in future, it is less certain at this point whether it will be Dr Chee who will stand there again in the next election."

Prof Tan said: "To put it bluntly, despite what is generally regarded as a good showing, Dr Chee should really examine if he's the best person to lead the SDP."

We will continue doing what we've done before: as we have with Marsiling-Yew Tee, with Holland-Bukit Timah, and the constituencies I've contested... We will continue to do all these things and see what we can do to serve the residents as well, and for them to get to know us better.

- Dr Chee Soon Juan

As much as one has to applaud the determination of Dr Chee to keep going despite losing every time he has contested, it is highly doubtful that he will strike parliamentary gold eventually.

Law prof: Chee lacks staying power

His chances of winning would have been much higher if the media did not attack him, Dr Chee Soon Juan said on Saturday night after his concession speech.

The Bukit Batok by-election candidate told reporters in Mandarin: "We are not just competing with the PAP (People's Action Party), we are also competing with media. It's disappointing."

But looking at the poll results, a political analyst told The New Paper that the Singapore Democratic Party (SDP) secretary-general would not have won anyway.

Discounting factors like the SG50 effect, the margin of the by-election ought to have been much closer, said political observer Eugene Tan.

On Saturday, Dr Chee had said that the results were encouraging and that it did not feel like a defeat.

But Associate Professor Tan thought otherwise, given that a by-election effect that was "as good as it can ever get".

First, the PAP was on the defensive, after incumbent PAP MP David Ong vacated the seat due to a personal indiscretion, Prof Tan said.

Second, Dr Chee, who has been a politician since 1992, was up against Mr Muralidharan Pillai, who was contesting in just his second election in eight months.

Added the law don: "The fact that he (Dr Chee) couldn't even touch 40 per cent shows that there are severe questions as to his electability.

"Next year will be his 25th year, counting from his first election. By all accounts, it is actually a very dismal track record for such a high-profile (candidate)."

He mentioned Dr Chee's lack of "staying power" as one of the reasons for his loss.

Compared with other opposition politicians like Mr Chiam See Tong, who contested and looked after Potong Pasir, Dr Chee moved to a different constituency with each election.

Prof Tan said: "To me, this reveals his political opportunism. There is no loyalty to a particular constituency. In the end, it's all about expediency - which constituency, in his view, is his best chance...

"I have never seen him sitting down to help people work through their issues.

"He has never really held a Meet-the-People Session. He's not interested in helping people. He's interested in getting elected into office."

He went further to suggest that SDP's central executive committee member Paul Tambyah would have polled better than Dr Chee.

"Dr Chee is a polarising figure. Paul Tambyah is not. He will not bring into the campaign all the baggage... People would have been more prepared for a candidate like Dr Tambyah."

The question now is whether Dr Chee will move on to a sixth constituency in the next general election, despite his promise to continue outreach work in Bukit Batok.

"He claims he understands what the heartlander issues are because he lives in a small flat.

"Let's see what he does, whether he will go into deep hibernation or churn out policy papers which are out of touch with reality."

Dr Chee is a polarising figure. Paul Tambyah is not. He will not bring into the campaign all the baggage... People would have been more prepared for a candidate like Dr Tambyah.

- Associate Professor Eugene Tan, on whether the SDP central executive committee member could have polled better than Dr Chee in the by-election.

Eugene Tan is a porlumpar beyond belief. He was finally caught out over the Population White Paper fiasco. Even the PAP will admit it was a burning ship and sinking fast. Workers Party plus a every man and his dog, civc organisations, NGOs tore it to shreds. Even people they consulted prior to its release such as former NMP Pauline Staughan went silent, pretended that she was not consulted. During the Parliamentary debate , PAP MP Inderjit Singh savaged the paper and crucified GCT.

When the motion was moved, Low Thia Kiang, the ever astute fox asked for electronic voting and not just the show of hands when results are overwhelming obvious.

All WP party Parliamentarians voted against it as well as 3 NMP namely
Mdm Faizah bte Haji Ahmad Jamal;
Ms Janice Koh Yu-Mei; and
Mr Laurence Lien Tsung Chern

In total 13 voted against it. Only one arsehole abstained and it was Eugene Tan. Inderjit Singh a PAP MP famously walked out before the voting bell and refused to vote as the whip was not lifted.

This porlumpar has been waiting and waiting for the PAP tea party. What he did not realise was it showed him as person without a backbone or one with independent judgement. Privately most PAP MPs agreed it was poorly done. It even forced the PM to call the Nurses to the Istana and apologise for the derogatory comment about them in the paper. PAP had no choice but to vote for it to avoid the further loss of remaining political capital on the paper.

Can you ever trust this guy to look after the interest of Singaporeans and the country. Why did Inderjit Singh and the scion of Lien Family speak so passionately and forcefully on this issue. Why did PAP MPs struggle with the issue.

The PAP was so embarrassed by the conduct of their porlumpar that he despite seeking a second term as NMP, was rejected.

I find that Dr Chee had no choice but to have his family involve in the campaigning.

PAP and their bootlickers kept vilifying Dr Chee's character and person to the public, the best way for Dr Chee to counter these dirty attacks is to show the public his personal side and his loving and supportive family. This move has been very successful in changing the false public image of him created by PAP and their MSM minions.

The public perception of Dr Chee has improved greatly, so much so that any more personal attacks from PAP could make PAP look bad and turn off voters. This is why PAP have stop their personal attacks, but instead now using their sycophantic anal-ysts like Eugene Tan to attack Dr Chee in the MSM.

It best that Chee uses a media or political adviser to guide him thru this. In asian and particularly in Chinese dominated societies and this includes, China, Hk Taiwan families are off limits and only the wife makes a cursory appearance for photo shoots. Sometimes the family including the kids are interviewed to establish the family background at the start of the campaign. Chee has a good and well grounded family and thus a tremendous assets to his political capital. However they should not be part of the politics or the political hustings This is where he crossed the line. It is also not done in Western Society.

When he evoked his children's names during the rally and overexposed the family in the media, it would have gone down as a lead balloon. It strikes as an attempt to gain sympathy votes or desperate. It was made worse by his supporters creating graphics with the kids names. Again I don't think he is politically astute or savvy. He needs guidance. To anyone in politics it basically 101 when it comes to families in politics.

The way I see, csj surrounds himself with allies who not only align with him ideologically but people who agrees with his style of leadership just to protect his position in the party. Anyone who doesn't fulfill these prerequisites won't get to stay in the party for long. When you have all people of the same frequency involve in the decisions making process, there is no one with different thinking to check their blind spots. Many silly mistakes that shouldn't be made were committed.

The party needs devil's advocate to put a check to this. Else they will likely commit the same mistakes. But can csj accommodate such person within? I have my doubt.

I disagree that Dr Chee has overexposed his family in this BE, this is just PAP bootlicker's latest unsubstantiated attack on Dr Chee, and what PAP is trying to influence the public to think. Considering that the previous PAP MP has hid and cheated his family with his adulterous affair, it would be good for Dr Chee to show the voters that he is a very good family man.

PAP has attacked Dr Chee's character as his biggest liability, so Dr Chee counters by making his character his asset, and his family is one proof of his good character.

Have these bootlicking anal-ysts actually survey the voters before giving their analysis? No research done to survey the voters, yet these anal-lyts like Eugene Tan slam Dr Chee publicly with very bias and unsubstantiated opinions.

I agree with you. Chiam was also quite obstinate and did not listen to others, however he had the political acumen to work it thru. But it failed him when it was time to hand-over. I guess many leaders struggle with this.

The SDP self-made mistakes are quite apparent and any independent advice would be key. Your point about asking someone to play the devil's advocate is really good.

Eugene Tan did not imply or insinuate anything that comes close to what what Hamas does. This is why SDP gets a bad name when supporters make ridiculous claims such as this. If you want to take on the PAP, you got to be more honest than them and not create falsehoods.

Eugene is sneakingly attempting to draw a parallel between Dr Chee overexposing his family versus Hamas using women and children as human shields against missile attacks from IDF.

CNA always invite either Eugene Tan or Gillian Koh as pro-miw political commentator.
Every time see them regurgitating on TV,will switch channel.Really sickening .
